    Notes: Abstract Although the sea breeze at Venice and on her hinterland is influenced by orography - mainly the Alps — to the north and the Po Valley to the west, the search for a correlation between the frequency of development of the sea breeze and the daily global solar radiation seems to be desirable, and may be useful for the management of emissions from the industrial area near Venice. Three different cases are examined: (i) the sea breeze occuring in the absence of any appreciable gradient wind; (ii) the sea breeze superimposed on a prevailing wind; (iii) the sea breeze not developing at all. The frequency distributions of these cases related to the global solar radiation at Venice are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A study has been made of the time evolution of the flux of moisture E over grassland. The parameterization of E has been examined in order to formulate an equation depending on the net radiation flux and on bulk parameters which depend on the daily average meteorological situation and soil conditions. In particular the gradient of soil moisture has been recognized as playing a fundamental role in the time evolution of E(t). A time-dependent equation is proposed to compute in a statistical sense the irrigation needs or to forecast the hourly values of E(t), the maximum value E 0 and the time at which this maximum happens.

    Notes: Abstract Experimental evidence indicates that the diurnal behaviour of the fluxes of heat into the ground and into the atmosphere versus the net flux of radiation can be modelled by closed curves, the hourly values folowing one another in either a clockwise or counter clockfashion. A general formulation to express the different heat fluxes as a function of net radiation Φ is proposed. This relationship between the different heat fluxes and Φ can be expressed as a sum of three terms: the first indicates a direct proportionality to Φ, the second gives the deviation from linearity and depends on ∂Φ/∂t, and the third gives the value of the flux when Φ = 0. The formulae are then expressed as a function of time and the ratios between the heat fluxes and Φ are evaluated. A comparison with the approximations generally used shows that the latter may be considered as particular cases of the more general equations proposed here.

    Notes: Abstract All works of art, from paintings, frescoes, sculptures, to monuments and buildings, are affected by diurnal and seasonal variations of the local microclimate, which induce interactions with the environmental atmosphere. Heat and vapour exchanges cause fluxes of heat and mass between the surface and the atmosphere, and may favour the agressivity of environmental pollutants. Condensation-evaporation cycles are recognized as being very important processes which adversely affect the life-time of the work of art. The need to control the microclimate or to stop condensation processes has been resolved by means of a dew-point signaller especially designed to overcome this problem. This paper discusses the characteristics of this device as well as the environmental philosophy which should be followed when conserving works of art.

    Notes: Abstract In the first part of this study, typical of historical climatology, the various sources regarding freezing of the Venetian Lagoon since the 9th century A.D., are reported and discussed. The events are related, where possible, to teleconnections. Two synoptic patterns (weather type A: northerly and D: easterly) seem to have played an important role. After having discussed the dynamics of the icing processes, the problem of comparing the data is considered, as over the centuries many works were made on the Lagoon, in order to divert the major tributaries. In fact, the hydrological regime and the physical characteristic of the Lagoon environment were changed, so that the conditions necessary for freezing were no longer the same. The series was compared with the severe winters in westtern Europe and England, in order to reconstruct the past climate of the Mediterranean region and discuss the observed secular changes in the light of the widely accepted ideas of climatic variations. The comparison shows some differences: e.g. at Venice the Medieval Climatic Optimum with the occurrence of severe winters ended earlier and the Little Ice Age was broken by a milder interval.

    Notes: Abstract The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome, is an example of how ancient buildings with thick walls lessen the impact of the external temperature and humidity variations. The external influence on the internal microclimate is studied in order to gather information on how the building exchanges heat and moisture. Correlations between outdoor and indoor values are found. The results are applied to the calculation of the condensation-evaporation cycles inside micropores due to the Kelvin effect, to assess their impact on works of arts placed inside and outside the Basilica. It was found that the building attenuation is not sufficient to avoid damage due to condensation-evaporation cycles on stones and plasters. Some suggestions are made in order to mitigate the temperature variations during the liturgical offices.

    Notes: Abstract The severity and frequency of sixteenth-century floods of the Rhine, the Main, the middle and upper Elbe with its tributaries, rivers of northern and central Italy, the Garonne and rivers in Catalonia and Andalusia are analyzed using documentary evidence. The basic topographical and hydrological characteristics of the rivers investigated as well as the synoptic causes of their flooding during the instrumental period are presented. Different examples of modifications of the run-off process due to anthropogenic activity are discussed. Prevalence in flood occurrence during the second half of the sixteenth century in comparison to the first half is typical for central European and Andalusian rivers (mainly in the 1560s and 1590s) and agrees with the evolution of precipitation patterns. On the other hand, Italian and Catalonian rivers, in part, had a higher occurrence of floods during the first half of the century. Changes in the flooding seasons in both halves of the century are not unambiguous. Results of an analysis on a broader European scale show floods to be a random natural phenomena with limited areal extent defined by the spatial influence of forcing meteorological factors (continuous heavy rains, sudden melting of thick snow cover, etc.). Despite some limitations of documentary evidence, series of reconstructed historical floods are valuable sources of proxy data which can be utilized for the study of the flooding fluctuations in the pre-instrumental period.

    Notes: Abstract Data regarding the frequency andoccurrence of sea storms in the Adriatic Sea and theWestern Mediterranean during the last millennium havebeen extracted from historical written sources. TheAdriatic Sea shows two anomalous periods of high stormfrequency: the first half of the 1500s and the secondhalf of the 1700s. In the 1500s the storms were morefrequent in autumn, while in the late 1700s theyoccurred at high frequency in winter. In the WesternMediterranean, storms had a higher frequency in thefirst half of the 1600s, with two lesser periods ofhigh frequency in the 1400s and at the end of the1700s. Although both records show a maximum frequencyof sea storms during the Spörer Minimum(1416–1534) of solar activity, sunspot series yieldno, or poor, correlation during the other periods oflowest activity, i.e., Oort Minimum (1010–1090), WolfMinimum (1282–1342), and Maunder Minimum (1645–1715),suggesting that a teleconnection between sea stormsand sunspots is improbable or masked in this region.No teleconnection was found either between the ElNiño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and surgesflooding Venice or the Western Mediterranean storms orbetween Venice surges and the Northern AtlanticOscillation (NAO).
