Notes: Abstract —LDDA (Lagrangian Discontinuous Deformation Analysis) is a new numerical analysis method to deal with the problems of discontinuous deformation in elastic block systems. The method is based on DDA (Discontinuous Deformation Analysis) and the domain decomposition algorithm. Due to the use of the contact criteria of the DDA, it is not necessary to define a slide line in advance for contact problems, which is needed in the classical FEM. The method prevails over the penalty method in the satisfaction of constrain conditions. By using the domain decomposition algorithm, the efficiency in solving equations is improved greatly.¶The process of solving a multi-elastic body system by LDDA is as follows: 1) to find total contact points (Lagrange multiplier points) among the elastic bodies according to the contact criteria of the DDA; 2) to solve the contact forces (Lagrange multipliers) by domain decomposition method; and 3) to calculate the displacement and stress caused by the contact forces and other loads by the FEM for each elastic body.¶In this paper, the method is used to model the dynamic process of the Tangshan earthquake (M s = 7.8) of 28 July, 1976 and to directly obtain the quasi-static and dynamic dislocations, shear stress drop, and rupture velocity of the earthquake fault.¶The simulation shows that the method can be used to efficiently solve the dynamic problems of earthquakes. It is also applicable for solving rock-engineering problems as a multi-elastic body system.

Notes: Abstract Two kinds of phenomenon have been observed when a liquid drop falls to a surface of the same liquid. The first, which can nearly always be observed, involves splash and some degree of penetration and “cleavage” and the conditions for this occurrence are identified. The experimental observations are compared with previous computational results. The second kind of colliding phenomena can be observed only by chance in an ordinary falling drop experiment and appears to be random. It includes the two phenomena investigated in this paper: the floating drop and the rolling drop.

Notes: Abstract The present paper studies the reliability-based structural optimization of the civil engineering in the seismic zone. The objective is to minimize the sum of construction material cost and the expected failure loss under severe earthquake, which is obtained by the sum of the products of the failure probability and its failure losses for the important failure modes. The set of constraints includes the deterministic constraints, and the constraints based on structural reliability – the reliability index constraints of structural element failure for the serviceability state under minor earthquake and the failure probability of the structural system for the ultimate limit state under severe earthquake. By introducing the load roughness index, the structural system reliability computation under hazard load can be greatly simplified, which is approximately determined by its weakest failure mode. Finally, the numerical example of high rising shear RC frame is calculated.

Notes: The classical nature of Berry's phase for photons is shown to arise from the intrinsic topological structure of Maxwell's theory. The phase is developed in the context of fiber-bundle theory and is discussed in some detail.

Notes: Amaranthus betacyanin pigments and commercial colorants were evaluated to determine color characteristics and stability at different temperatures in jelly, ice cream, and a model beverage. The betacyanin exhibited brighter color characteristics than red radish anthocyanin, with similar color stability during 20-wk storage (≤ 14 °C) or during the initial 4-wk storage (≤ 25 °C), but was less stable than red radish anthocyanin at 37 °C. The betacyanin was not as stable as synthetic Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Red No. 3 under most storage conditions. Ascorbic acid had a protective effect on Amaranthus pigments. Excessive sucrose (≥ 16%) decreased stability of the pigments. The betacyanin tested may be a feasible natural colorant for jelly, higher pH beverages, and ice cream under selected conditions.

Notes: Rapid groundwater drawdown has become the biggest threat to social-economic sustainability in the Hebei Plain. To determine the cause of the groundwater decline and develop a practical plan for long-term groundwater use, water-table fluctuation data were collected over a period of 20 years. Adopting a simplified water balance model, the average infiltration coefficient of precipitation and specific yield in the Hebei Plain from 1985–1995 were simulated and the groundwater level decline by water-use sectors and crops was calculated. Analysis showed that agricultural water use was the main reason for groundwater drawdown. Winter wheat was the most water-consuming crop, causing a significant decline of the water table. It is suggested that planting strategies should be adjusted and water-saving agricultural practices be carried out, to achieve sustainable groundwater use in the Hebei Plain.
