    Description: For ice concentrations less than 85%, internal ice stresses in the sea ice pack are small andsea ice is said to be in free drift. The sea ice drift is then the result of a balance between Coriolisacceleration and stresses from the ocean and atmosphere. We investigate sea ice drift using data fromindividual drifting buoys as well as Arctic-wide gridded fields of wind, sea ice, and ocean velocity. Weperform probabilistic inverse modeling of the momentum balance of free-drifting sea ice, implemented toretrieve the Nansen number, scaled Rossby number, and stress turning angles. Since this problem involvesa nonlinear, underconstrained system, we used a Monte Carlo guided search scheme—the NeighborhoodAlgorithm—to seek optimal parameter values for multiple observation points. We retrieve optimal dragcoefficients ofCA=1.2×10−3andCO=2.4×10−3from 10-day averaged Arctic-wide data from July 2014that agree with the AIDJEX standard, with clear temporal and spatial variations. Inverting daily averagedbuoy data give parameters that, while more accurately resolved, suggest that the forward model oversimplifies the physical system at these spatial and temporal scales. Our results show the importance of the correct representation of geostrophic currents. Both atmospheric and oceanic drag coefficients are found to decrease with shorter temporal averaging period, informing the selection of drag coefficient for short timescale climate models.

(2) Nack der Spontanhypothese pendelt die gratwandernde Ameise mit selbstbestimmer Amplitude beidseitig um den Grat. Im Experiment unter starker und schwacher Beleuchtung liefen die Ameisen über Zylinder variablen Durchmessers zwischen Nest und Futterstelle. Die beobachtete positive Korrelation zwischen der Pendelamplitude und dem Zylinderdurchmesser belegt die erste Hypothese.
    Notes: Summary We tested two hypotheses about the mechanism of crest-line trailing in the carpenter ant,Camponotus pennsylvanicus (DeGeer): (1) the slope hypothesis says that the ant turns back toward the crest-line whenever a critical downslope is encountered (geoclinotais); (2) the displacement hypothesis says that the oscillation around the crestline has an intrinsically specified amplitude. Inthe experiments, the ants shuttled between the nest and a feeding station running across the tops of cylinders of variable diameter. This was done under both high and low light intensity. The amplitudes of the oscillations correlate positively with the diameters of the cylindrical substrate, which supports the first hypothesis.

    Notes: Abstract In tuberculosis, it is often important to establish the source of infection and to determine whether disease is due to a new strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis or to relapse. To cope with the resurgence of tuberculosis and atypical mycobacterioses in AIDS patients, on the one hand, and to overcome the limitations of classical bacteriological procedures on the other, the development of rapid, sensitive, and reliable diagnostic and epidemiologic too ls is highly desirable. Molecular typing methods are often based on repeated genes such as those for rRNA. Ribotyping is of limited use with pathogenic mycobacteria, as the slow-growers possess a single rRNA operon, while the fast-growers have two. This problem has been overcome by the discovery and study of repeated DNA elements in mycobacterial genomes, as these provide an alternative pathway for diagnostic and epidemiological investigations.

    Notes: Abstract The polymorphic GC-rich repetitive sequence (PGRS) found on the chromosome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was characterized by means of mapping, cloning and sequencing. PGRS was present in at least 26 loci and consisted of many tandem repeats of the consensus sequence CGGCGGCAA. As the core of the consensus motif was the triplet CGG, or CRR (where R is a purine), it seems likely that PGRS arose by means of triplet expansion, accounting for its polymo rphism. Several copies of PGRS were linked to a conserved open reading frame. PGRS was used as the target sequence for the polymerase chain reaction in an attempt to develop a new typing technique.

    Notes: The photoinduced metastable ion fragmentation of niobium clusters has been found to closely correlate with the laser vaporization source conditions. The experimental evidence indicates the clusters agglomerate in the supersonic expansion. These agglomerated clusters exhibit rather unique behavior for a transition metal system. Both evaporation and fission fragmentation are observed. Two color MPI studies reveal the existence of long lived neutral intermediate states. Also, the kinetic energy release is extremely small, 〈10 meV, and independent of the excitation energy. The concept of clusters within a cluster, i.e., agglomerated clusters, is introduced to rationalize many experimental findings.

    Notes: The Rydberg states of H2S have been investigated by multiphoton ionization, resonant enhanced at the two-photon and three-photon level (REMPI). The REMPI spectra (ion signal vs laser wavelength) are compared to the one-photon absorption spectrum. In addition, photoelectron spectra (PES) were collected at most of the absorption peaks in both the 2+1 and 3+1 REMPI processes. The vibrational state distribution of H2S+ formed by REMPI at a number of laser wavelengths is highly peaked at a single vibrational level. These intermediate Rydberg states could therefore be assigned on the basis of the PES. The REMPI-PES at other laser wavelengths were more complex probably because of perturbed intermediate Rydberg states. A comparison of the 2+1 and 3+1 REMPI wavelength scans shows significant peak intensity differences, which we attribute to the different Δl selection rules in the two- and three-photon absorption steps. New H2S 4p Rydberg states were observed in the two-photon resonance study, and a number of previously observed peaks have been reassigned on the basis of these results.
