    Abstract: William Bateson brought the work of Mendel (and much more) to the attention of the English-speaking world. He commanded the biological sciences in the decades after Darwin's death in 1882. To understand these years we must first understand Bateson. Through examination of the life of a major contributor to the turn-of-the-nineteenth-century revolution in biology, the authors reconcile the genocentrism of George Williams and Richard Dawkins with the hierarchical thinking of Richard Goldschmidt and Stephen Jay Gould. Aided by Rebecca Saunders, Bateson invented much of the basic terminology of modern genetics and, when addressing Darwin's great problem – the origin of species, introduced the mysterious term "the residue." While the first edition of this work (2008) related "residue" to relative concentrations of bases in DNA, the second edition reveals this as reflecting fundamental differences in short strings of bases. Thus, the book has come to represent not only Bateson’s science and life, but also a revised history of the biosciences that is likely to be increasingly visited, both by scientists and by those who wish to fully understand contemporary debates on racial, eugenic and gender aspects of genetics. In a nutshell, the book describes what we, in modern terms, would call a "colossal intelligence failure." Mendel handed it to us "on a plate" in 1865 when Bateson was only 4. It took 35 years to "join the dots" with Bateson a primary joiner. Shrugged off by many 20th century scientists as a freak "blip" in what was really an orderly advance, the Mendel episode was but one of a succession of such "blips." Thus, a multiplicity of post-Mendelian "Mendels" emerge as the story of Bateson's life unfolds.     Notes: Abstract Thirteen strains ofPhytophthora porri from five different hosts were compared with respect to their morphology, cardinal temperatures for growth, pathogenicity to leek and cabbage and restriction fragment patterns of mitochondrial DNA. Morphology of vegetative growth was rather similar in most isolates. Those characters which differed among isolates showed overlapping variability and could not be used to distinguish groups, with the exception of production of oogonia and sporangia and the antheridium type. Considerable differences were found in restriction patterns of mitochondrial DNA, isolates from the same host mostly showing identical patterns. Isolates from differentAllium species showed relatively similar restriction patterns if compared to the other isolates. Isolates fromBrassica oleracea proved to be a homogeneous group, quite different from the others with respect to restriction patterns, production of sporangia, production of oogonia, antheridium type and pathogenicity. One isolate, CBS 366.59, isolated from and pathogenic toA. porrum, deviated in many characters from the other isolates. It showed the restriction patterns ofPhytophthora nicotianae and also the high cardinal temperatures for growth typical for this species. The sporangia, however, were distinctly non-papillate and the majority of antheridia was of the paragynous type.

    Notes: Continuous improvement programmes constitute an area in which creativity seems to play a vital role. This paper shows how continuous improvement may be studied more effectively in a framework which reveals relationships between the four facets of creativity: products, processes, people, and the press or environment. It is suggested that such a systematic analysis can enhance continuous improvement efforts by indicating how momentum is maintained as the company develops self-reflective (‘learning’) skills.

    Notes: This paper deals with two related studies of IT implementation. The action research component involved the setting up of ‘creativity club’ workshops to support implementation of IT projects in four organisations. The dynamics of these clubs are examined within an interpretive paradigm. The second component collected data on the wider implementation characteristics of the four projects and those of a ‘matched’ set of projects in four additional organisations. It is proposed that the studies support a reconceptualisation of implementation as a form of institutional innovation within which creativity can be regarded as a process of meaning creation and social learning.

    Notes: Some time ago the Hungarian scholar Istvan Magyari-Beck (1994) published a challenging article in this journal indicating weaknesses in creativity research which sparked off responses from the American scholars Teresa Amabile (1994) and Scott Isaksen (1995). While Magyari-Beck applied familiar themes from the history of science, this article borrows extensively from the latest thinking in the philosophy of science, thus continuing the debate started by Magyari-Beck at the ontological and epistemological plane. The contribution of this article lies in the fact that it uncovers some basic assumptions researchers hold about the nature of the (social) world and ways they can obtain knowledge about that world. As such it challenges orthodox ideas about “good” research and theory building.
