    Description: Interannual variability in the global land carbon sink is strongly related to variations in tropical temperature and rainfall. This association suggests an important role for moisture-driven fluctuations in tropical vegetation productivity, but empirical evidence to quantify the responsible ecological processes is missing. Such evidence can be obtained from tree-ring data that quantify variability in a major vegetation productivity component: woody biomass growth. Here we compile a pantropical tree-ring network to show that annual woody biomass growth increases primarily with dry-season precipitation and decreases with dry-season maximum temperature. The strength of these dry-season climate responses varies among sites, as reflected in four robust and distinct climate response groups of tropical tree growth derived from clustering. Using cluster and regression analyses, we find that dry-season climate responses are amplified in regions that are drier, hotter and more climatically variable. These amplification patterns suggest that projected global warming will probably aggravate drought-induced declines in annual tropical vegetation productivity. Our study reveals a previously underappreciated role of dry-season climate variability in driving the dynamics of tropical vegetation productivity and consequently in influencing the land carbon sink.

    Notes: Smooth cobalt thin films have been deposited by decomposing dicobalt octacarbonyl [Co2(CO)8] with 248 nm excimer laser radiation. Area selective deposition has been achieved by imaging a mask onto soda-lime glass and Suprasil quartz substrates. The decomposition has been found to be partially due to thermal decomposition of the cobalt carbonyl on the laser-heated surface and partially due to photolysis of adsorbed cobalt carbonyl molecules. The crystalline structure of the cobalt films was found to depend on the laser fluence. For a fluence below 115 mJ cm−2 per pulse, the hcp phase was produced, but for higher fluences the fcc phase was formed, and was found to be stable at room temperature. Examination of the optically smooth surface of the low fluence films showed nanometer scale ridges parallel to the gas flow direction.

    Notes: In a laboratory stream channel consisting of two tributaries joining to form a ‘river’ it proved possible to establish three populations of minnows in separate home ranges. Minnows in the apparatus avoided water with low concentrations of dissolved oxygen but returned to the home range when aerated water was re-established. Concentrations of 4, 8 and 10 mg 1−1 of phenol did not cause avoidance behaviors, in fact the highest concentration killed some fish, but activity levels were severely depressed and shoaling behaviors was also affected.

    Notes: Summary Tropical Cyclone Drena, a relatively long lived cyclone lasting from January 2, 1997 to January 10, 1997, crossed over three well separated island groups and affected a fourth in the south western Pacific Ocean during different stages of its life cycle. Midway through its transition into an extra-tropical low, it passed over the eastern edge of Norfolk Island, an isolated island located in the western Pacific Ocean midway between New Zealand and New Caledonia, at 0615 UTC (1745 local) on January 9, 1997. The tropical cyclone exhibited markedly different characteristics during each phase of its life cycle, with thick fog being reported during the eye passage at Norfolk Island. Although routine global and Australian region numerical models were able to provide the operational forecasters with broad scale guidance as to the movement of the tropical cyclone, the level of detail available at these resolutions is insufficient to identify the characteristics important to communities in the tropical cyclone's path. The high resolution numerical model (HIRES) developed by the University of New South Wales, was run at a resolution of 25 kilometres to investigate the evolution of the tropical cyclone from a warm cored, quasi-symmetrical vortex into a highly asymmetrical mid latitude low pressure system. The model captures the observed wind and precipitation structure of the cyclone very well during this crucial transition phase. The comparison extends into the vertical with a model derived vertical cross section depicting the key features observed in a sequence of ten specially requested radiosonde flights, released at six hourly intervals, from Norfolk Island which transect the passage of the tropical cyclone over this remote island.

    Notes: Abstract We describe an improved tree-ring reconstruction of mean warm-season (November–April) temperatures for Tasmania from Huon pine. This record extends back to 1600 BC and is based on a tree-ring chronology that was processed to retain as much low-frequency variance as possible. The resulting reconstruction explains 46.6% of the variance and verifies significantly when compared to withheld instrumental data. Cross-spectral analysis of actual and estimated temperatures over the 1886–1991 common period indicates that most of the unexplained variance is at periods 〈 12 years in length. At periods 〉 12 years, the squared coherency ranges between 0.6–0.8, and the cross-spectral gain indicates that the amplitude of the reconstruction is a nearly unbiased estimate of the true temperature amplitude. Therefore, this reconstruction should be especially useful for studying multi-decadal temperature variability in the Tasmanian sector of the Southern Hemisphere over the past 3592 years. To this end, we examined the time evolution of low-frequency temperature amplitude fluctuations and found evidence for a 35% amplitude reduction after AD 100 that persisted until about AD 1900. Since that time, the low-frequency temperature amplitude has systematically increased. We also show how this reconstruction is related to large-scale sea surface temperatures (SST) in the Indian Ocean and eastward to the dateline. Pointwise correlations between the Tasmanian record and SSTs reveal a relationship that extends across the southern Indian Ocean and towards the Arabian Sea. This pattern is largely determined by inter-decadal temperature variability, with correlations in this 〉 10-year bandwidth commonly exceeding 0.6 over most of the southern Indian and southwestern Pacific sectors. A rotated empirical orthogonal function analysis reveals that the pattern of pointwise correlations found between the temperature reconstruction and SSTs is largely explained by the linear combination of three orthogonal modes of SST variability.
