Notes: Summary Phosphocitrate and its analogue N-sulpho-2-amino tricarballylate were compared with ethane-1-hydroxy-1, 1-diphosphonate for inhibition of calcium phosphate crystallization in hydroxyapatite induced crystal growth and45Ca uptake by matrix vesicles. Phosphocitrate (1 μM) was the most potent inhibitor followed by ethane-1-hydroxy-1, 1-diphosphonate and N-sulpho-2-amino tricarballylate, the latter requiring a high concentration (100 μM) to be equally effective as an inhibitor.

Notes: A cathode constructed of a thin, directly heated strip of LaB6 is described. The cathode is simple to construct, requires modest heating power, has high current emission capability and is quite rugged. Construction details will be given and cathode performance data presented. The cathode has been used in tokamak dc current injection experiments.

Notes: The nucleotide sequence of a DNA fragment that contains the fimA gene, encoding the major fimbrial subunit, of Serratia marcescens IA506 and associated flanking sequences has been elucidated. In addition, the origin of transcription has been identified and is located 120 base pairs upstream of the fimA initiation codon. The predicted amino acid sequence of the FimA polypeptide exhibits some degree of sequence homology with the fimbrial subunits encoded by the fimA determinants of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhimurium, and Escherichia coli and also to Smf2, the major structural component of mannose-resistant (MR) fimbriae of S. marcescens. The Serratia adhesin that facilitates haemagglutination mediated by type 1 fimbriae is less susceptible to inhibition by D-mannose than has been observed to be the case in other type 1 fimbrial adhesins. The molecule conferring this adherence specificity has been shown to be distinct from the fimA gene product and, therefore, is analogous to the fimbrial systems reported in other species.

Notes: Growth rates of juvenile Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas were studied at a nursery at Pipe Clay Lagoon, Australia, between 1992 and 1997. The highest rates were between December 1992 and May 1993 (instantaneous growth rate, k = 0.020 ± 0.011 day−1), and the lowest rates occurred between January and June 1997 (0.003 ± 0.023 day−1). The latter coincided with lower chlorophyll a concentrations (0.43 μg L−1) than in previous production seasons (0.86–1.5 μg L−1). Supplementary feeding of oysters with Isochrysis sp. (T-ISO) improved k by at least twofold. Two experiments assessed growth with different stocking volumes and diet presentation. Another established that AlgaMac 2000 and Microfeast MB-30 were effective supplementary diets (k = 0.024 and 0.032 day−1 respectively; k = 0.009 day−1 for control), although not as effective as Isochrysis sp. (T-ISO; k = 0.054). The final experiment established a relationship between k and supplementary feed concentrations. A preliminary assessment at Pipe Clay Lagoon – a site with low and variable productivity – indicates that supplementary feeding would be cost-effective. Moreover, it may be necessary if the nursery is to have a continuity of oyster seed supply to service the needs of industry.

Notes: In order to investigate the proposition that high-Z impurities are responsible for the anomalously short lifetime of the Caltech spheromak, the center electrode of the spheromak plasma gun has been coated with a variety of metals (bare steel, copper, nickel, chromium, rhodium, and tungsten). Visible light (230–890 nm) emitted directly from the plasma in the gun breech was monitored for each of the coated electrodes. Plasma density and temperature and spheromak lifetime were compared for each electrode. Results indicate little difference in gun performance or macroscopic plasma parameters. The chromium and tungsten electrodes performed marginally better in that a previously reported helicity injection effect [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 2144 (1990)] is only observed in discharges using these electrode coatings. There are subtle differences in the detailed line emission spectra from the different electrodes, but the spectra are remarkably similar. The fact that (1) contrary to expectations, attempts to reduce high-Z impurities had only marginal effect on the spheromak lifetime coupled with (2) an estimate of Zeff〈2 based on a 0-D model suggests that it is not impurities but some other mechanism that limits the lifetime of small, cold spheromaks. We will discuss the general characteristics of the spheromak gun as well as effects due to the coatings.

Notes: We present time-resolved experimental measurements of the electron distribution function f(v(parallel),v⊥,t) in a pulsed, partially ionized, electron cyclotron resonance (ECR)-produced plasma. The discharge has some characteristics similar to those used in plasma processing applications. These properties include ECR production in a strong magnetic field and low electron temperature (Te〈5 eV). In addition, electron-neutral collisions play an important role. A novel analyzer is used to study the dependence of f(v(parallel),v⊥,t) on velocities both parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field. This information cannot be obtained with a simple Langmuir probe. The temporal evolution of f(v(parallel),v⊥,t) is examined during plasma formation, with the source biased, with the source grounded and in the afterglow.

Notes: Formation and equilibrium studies have been performed on the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX). Spheromaks are formed with a magnetized coaxial plasma gun and equilibrium is established in both small (dsmall=0.16 m) and large (dlarge=3dsmall=0.50 m) copper flux conservers. Using magnetic probe arrays it has been verified that spheromak formation is governed solely by gun physics (in particular the ratio of gun current to flux, μ0Igun/Φgun) and is independent of the flux conserver dimensions. It has also been verified that equilibrium is well described by the force free condition ∇×B=λB (λ=constant), particularly early in decay. Departures from the force-free state are due to current profile effects described by a quadratic function λ=λ(ψ). Force-free SSX spheromaks will be merged to study magnetic reconnection in simple magnetofluid structures. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
