Notizen: Exposure of adolescent turbot Scophthalmus maximus to low rations during vitellogenesis, covering the 4 months immediately prior to spawning, led to a drop of 70% in mean ovary weight, and was associated with poor growth of the vitellogenic oocytes or, in a third of cases, the absence of vitellogenic oocytes. Exposure to low rations during the recruitment of vitellogenic oocytes, 4–8 months prior to spawning, produced a more variable response. A few of these females produced well-developed vitellogenic oocytes, but in most, vitellogenic oocytes were absent or only poorly developed and in some cases there was a high incidence of atresia. Exposure to intermediate rations throughout oocyte recritment and vitellogenesis also depressed oocyte development. In maturing females the number of non-atretic vitellogenic oocytes (relative potential fecundity) averaged 998 per g of somatic body weight of fish at the start of the spawning season in mid-June. Maturation of the males was not significantly influenced by the dietary regime. The small size of the testes and the low levels of milt production, even in fish fed high rations immediately prior to spawning, showed that reproductive investment in males was much lower than in females.

Notizen: The classical view on density-dependent growth is that an increase in population density heightens intraspecific competition for food, leading to reduced food intake and depressed growth. This paper summarizes the analysis of English Groundfish Survey, International Young Fish Survey and ICES Roundfish Working Group data for evidence of density-dependent growth of I- and II-group cod, haddock and whiting in the North Sea.Within Roundfish areas there was a negative relationship between growth and density in some instances, but it was small. However, there were persistent differences in both growth rate and density between Roundfish areas. In all cases, except for I-group cod, there appeared to be a tendency for fish in low-density areas to be larger than fish in high-density areas; this might be due to feeding competition but other explanations are possible. The results urge caution in interpreting commercial catch data for evidence of density-dependent growth, since changes in fishing effort in particular areas could significantly bias the conclusions. There was evidence of enhanced survival of small fish in good year-classes; this would depress the mean size at age, thereby mimicking the effects of density-dependent growth.

Notizen: A nutrient source was diluted with indigestible filler in the form of α-cellulose. The trout compensated for up to 30% cellulose by increasing the total weight of food eaten, thereby stabilizing both nutrient intake and growth rate. The fish failed to compensate for levels of 40–50% cellulose and, despite evidence for an increase in the size of the stomach, nutrient intake was approximately halved. There was a slight reduction in food conversion efficiency and the growth rate declined accordingly. By contrast, faecal output rose considerably.

Notizen: The rate of regurgitation of food from the stomachs of trawl caught whiting Merlangius merlangus was negatively correlated with fish size. Increased musculature of the oesophageal sphincter in larger fish may enable them to resist the forced expulsion of their stomach contents to a greater extent.

Notizen: Gastric lavage was used to investigate the effects of temperature, prey type and prey size on gastric evacuation in small cod Gadus morhua and whiting Merlangius merlangus. The fish were fed to satiation and subsequently the stomach contents were sampled to determine the rate at which food was evacuated. Satiation meal size was positively related to temperature and differed between prey types. The gastric evacuation rate (GER) also tended to increase with temperature and varied with prey type. GER at temperatures of 11.3–12.7° C averaged 1.5–1.7 times higher than at 6–9.5° C. There was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in the evacuation of lugworm Arenicola marina, sandeel Ammodytes spp., and herring Clupea harengus, but the GER of brown shrimp Crangon vulgaris was much slower (P〈0.05). No significant changes in GER were observed when fish were fed on three different size groups of either herring or brown shrimp. In whiting, there was no significant difference in the GER of individual herring or brown shrimp when they were fed as single species meals or incorporated in meals containing a mixture of prey species.

Notizen: Experiments were conducted on a size range of turbot using whole prey organisms. Stomach contents were serially sampled at intervals after feeding on a range of meal sizes of sandeels and sprats. Gastric evacuation was essentially linear with time, though some fluctuations were observed. Control over evacuation appeared to be by regulation of the processes leading to chyme production. Close agreement between evacuation rate and the satiation feeding rate of fish in laboratory experiments was observed. Implications of these findings for techniques of estimating the feeding rates of natural fish populations are discussed.

Notizen: Three meal sizes of sandeels were fed to whiting in order to monitor the evacuation of food out of the stomach. The stomach contents were sampled at intervals after feeding, using a stomach pump. In such experiments, the proportion of fish with empty stomachs tends to increase with time and, since stomach contents are limited to zero or positive values, the variance of the stomach contents becomes censored at zero. This tends to produce a curved relationship between mean stomach content and time, which gives the impression that evacuation rate slows down at low levels of stomach fullness. By taking account of censoring, it was shown that the evacuation curve generated for whiting was consistent with and could be generated from a linear model in which the rate of gastric evacuation exhibited by the fish was constant and independent of meal size, level of stomach fullness and time after feeding. The parameters of the linear model were estimated by maximum likelihood and then applied in a second model to predict the observed mean stomach content. The average gastric evacuation rate of whiting of mean weight 268 g at 10°C was 0.31 g h−1.

Notizen: Abstract The sequence and structure of RSV genomic RNA leader and gene junctions have been studied. The secondary structure of the leader and interactions of the gene junctions with a viral protein may well control the functions of RSV-RNA in reverse transcription, translation and processing.
