    Notes: Growth rate, soluble-protein content and digestive-enzyme activities were studied in Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) early post-larvae under six feeding regimens, which included combinations of freshly hatched Artemia nauplii, an artificial diet and algae. Growth (0.11 mg DW day−1) and soluble-protein content (61.8 μg protein larvae−1 at PL10) of post-larvae fed mixed diets were significantly higher (P 〈 0.05). An artificial diet used alone or co-fed with algae caused the lowest growth (0.03–0.05 mg DW day−1) and soluble-protein content (13.7–15.5 μg protein larvae−1 at PL10). Trypsin-like activity was higher (up to 10 times) in post-larvae fed Artemia nauplii and an artificial diet alone or plus algae. The artificial diet stimulated chymotrypsin activity, apparently in response to squid meal present in this diet. Amylase activity increased when post-larvae were fed the artificial diet. This was apparently related more to the origin of the starch than to the total carbohydrate level of the diet. No obvious relationship was found between enzyme activity and growth in any feed combination. Based on growth and soluble-protein content, we determined that partial substitution (50%) of Artemia nauplii by artificial diet and the use of algae co-fed beyond the first post-larval stage benefits growth and the nutritional state of L. vannamei post-larvae.

    Notes: The taxonomy of the genus Leuciscus in the Iberian Peninsula has been presented on the basis of morphological analysis. Two species are believed to occur in Portuguese inland waters, L. carolitertii, the northern basins chub, and L. pyrenaicus, which was described for the Tejo and southern basins. Since only slight differences in the meristic and morphometric characters are observed, the distinction between the two species has been made previously mainly on the basis of osteology. In order to investigate the patterns of genetic differentiation between these species, 24 sites were sampled for both species, and examined electrophoretically for the study of variation at 27 presumptive loci. The results pointed to different levels of population differentiation among drainages and support the recognition of the species level for L. pyrenaicus and L. carolitertii. Our results also suggested that the distribution area of L. pyrenaicus is probably restricted to Tejo and to the small drainages near Tejo, while L. carolitertii seems to have a widespread distribution area, including Lima, Douro, Vouga, Mondego, Guadina and Sado drainages. Moreover, concerning the southern populations, Mira and Arade, the surprisingly high level of differentiation observed at several loci, supports the existence of a further species occurring in these small drainages. The evolutionary aspects related to that differentiation are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  To enhance the level of resistance to insects in tropical maize germplasm we have developed techniques to successfully transform elite tropical maize inbred based on the activity of specific cryI proteins against four major maize pests – corn earworm, fall armyworm, southwestern corn borer and sugarcane borer. Constructs containing cryIAb or cryIAc synthetic genes were used. To generate transgenic plants we have established methods for biolistic bombardment and the selection and regeneration of immature embryos and calli from the elite tropical lines CML72, CML216, CML323, CML327 and hybrids. Transgenic plants resistant to the herbicide BastaTM contained the bands for the cry, bar and gus genes as detected by Southern blot analyses. A simple leaf bioassay presented varying levels of resistance to Southwestern corn borer of transgenic tropical maize carrying the cryIAc gene. Analyses of the progenies confirmed the sexual transmission of the introduced genes and their stable expression.

    Notes: Abstract We review some exact results for the motion of a tagged particle in simple models. Then, we study the density dependence of the self-diffusion coefficientD N(ρ) in lattice systems with simple symmetric exclusion in which the particles can jump, with equal rates, to a set ofN neighboring sites. We obtain positive upper and lower bounds onF N(ρ)=N{(1−ρ)−[DN(ρ)/DN(0)]}/[ρ(1−ρ)]x for ρ∈[0, 1]. Computer simulations for the square, triangular, and one-dimensional lattices suggest thatF N becomes effectively independent ofN forN≥20.

    Notes: Abstract The complete time dependence of the stress-stress correlation functions in lattice gas cellular automata is calculated from the ring kinetic theory using numerical and analytical methods. This provides corrections, typically of 10–20%, to the usual molecular chaos calculations, where correlation functions decay exponentially. The resulting correlation function crosses over from an initial exponential decay to the long-time behavior calculated from mode coupling theory. The present theory, applied to the viscosity, accounts for a substantial part of the observed difference between the Boltzmann theory and simulations.

    Notes: Abstract We obtain the complete time dependence of the velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) for lattice gas cellular automata, usingring kinetic theory. This theory accounts for the simplest correlated collisions that improve on the molecular chaos approach, and yields a closed equation for the VACF that we evaluate for both infinite and finite systems. We compare our analytical results with numerical simulations at all times, as well as with long-time results of the mode coupling theories, finding a very good agreement for all times at all densities.

    Notes: Abstract The inverse two-spin correlation function of a one-dimensional three-state Potts lattice with constant nearest-neighbor interactions in a uniform external field is derived exactly. It is shown that the external field induces long-range correlations. The inverse two-spin correlation function decays in a monotonie exponential fashion for a ferromagnetic lattice, while it decays in an oscillatory exponential fashion for an antiferromagnetic lattice. With no external field the inverse two-spin correlation function has a finite range equal to that of the interactions.
