Notes: Abstract —The inversion of surface-wave dispersion curves can provide information on the average elastic properties of the upper crustal layers that are usually poorly sampled by body waves. The broad band digital records of earthquakes which recently occurred in Slovenia and neighbouring regions are used to extract the group velocity of the fundamental mode of Rayleigh waves, using frequency-time analysis (FTAN). The obtained dispersion curves permit a good resolution for the velocity and the thickness of the upper crust. The thickness of the uppermost sedimentary layer varies between 4 and 6 km and its shear-wave velocity is less than 3 km/s. The lower sedimentary layer is 7 to 9 km thick and its shear-wave velocity ranges from about 3.05 km/s in eastern Slovenia, to about 3.25 km/s in western Slovenia. The shear-wave velocity in the crystalline layer is around 3.5 – 3.7 km/s in the eastern part, while in the western part it reaches a rather high value of about 3.85 km/s.

Notes: Abstract The influence of the Stark effect on multiphoton ionization of Ba atoms under conditions when the dynamic polarizability depends strongly on the frequency of the laser radiation is investigated. It is found that for some electric field strengths ε of the laser radiation this effect gives rise to resonance peaks in the Ba+ ion yield as a function of the laser radiation frequency at frequencies corresponding to single-photon transitions between the excited states. These frequencies can differ substantially from the frequencies corresponding to the conventional multiphoton excitation of these states from the ground states of the atoms. Peaks in the ion yield as a function of ε behave differently from the conventional Stark effect—their position on the frequency scale does not depend strongly on ε. The conditions under which such an induced resonance structure appears are determined.

Notes: Abstract The resonance structure of doubly-charged-ion production during the ionization of Ba atoms by infrared radiation (color-center laser radiation) is identified. It is shown that this structure is due to the excitation of states of the neutral Ba atom which are strongly perturbed as a result of the Stark effect under conditions such that the dynamic polarizability has large absolute values and depends strongly on the frequency of the radiation.

Notes: Abstract The hydrated rare earth orthophosphates LnPO4 ·xH2O (Ln=La-Dy) contain zeolitic water in the structural channels, which is released reversibly up to 300°. The thermal stabilities of the hydrates depend upon the nature of the Ln atom. The dehydration temperature decreases with decreasing ionic radiusr of Ln3+, according to the general equationθ=(r−a)/b (whereθ is the DSC and/or DTG dehydration peak temperature, anda andb are empirical constants depending on the experimental conditions). The contracting-area rate equation was valid for linearization of the isothermalα vs. time plots in the rangeα ∈ 〈0; 0.65〉. Kinetic values ofE, A, ΔH + and ΔS+ were calculated and the kinetic stabilities of the hydrates are discussed.

Notes: Conclusions 1. Use of the tunneling method for excavating the cut for the dam core made it possible to place the loam in the dam core simultaneously with the preparatory work for blasting at the higher levels. 2. The distribution of the heap of blasted rock over a large area made it possible to use several excavators and, consequently, to reduce the time of completing the work. 3. In this method, it is not necessary to construct additional dropping places at the working levels.

Notes: Abstract The Mw = 5.4 Roermond earthquake of April 13, 1992, is used as a 'test' earthquake for the development of source inversion methods at a regional scale in Europe. We combine structural modelling of the European continent (Du et al., 1997) with two source inversion methods derived from Sileny et al. (1992), and Mao et al. (1994). We show that following this strategy, it is possible to fully analyze the inverse problem of the hypocentral relocation, source mechanism and rupture history. We define and discuss our methodology on the basis of the inverse problem and of the associated tools. The results of our application to the Roermond earthquake are discussed in the light of other previously published solutions. Such an approach appears to offer a promising tool for the global description of seismic sources in regions well studied from the structural point of view, through waveform inversion of a few regional records.

Notes: Abstract The perturbation of the Ba atom by radiation from a color center laser in the range between 8400 and 8700 cm−1 is experimentally studied. The study was performed by the method of resonance ionization spectroscopy by simultaneously irradiating a beam of Ba atoms by a color center laser and a dye laser at 17735 cm−1. The dynamic polarizabilities of the 5d6p 1 F 0 3 and 6p 2 1 D 2 levels are measured.
