    Notes: Abstract  We have studied the binding pattern of antibody mAB 2B8 directed against even-skipped orthologous proteins (EVE) in honeybee embryos. Primary and secondary EVE stripes form in roughly anterior-to-posterior succession; there are 8 primary and 16 secondary stripes. The most posterior primary stripes appear only after the onset of gastrulation. The secondary stripes form by a splitting of primary stripes; they demarcate the parasegmental pattern. While these findings resemble EVE expression in long-germ beetles, the honeybee differs from both beetles and dipterans by two transient pair-rule traits in the parasegmental EVE pattern: the secondary stripes in head and thorax alternate in strength, yet out of register with the Drosophila pattern, and over the whole pattern the odd-numbered stripes vanish earlier than their even-numbered counterparts. As in Drosophila, however, the strong EVE stripes coincide with the weak engrailed (EN) stripes. These findings are taken to indicate that (1) honeybee and beetles share a conserved mode of EVE stripe formation whilst Drosophila has diverged in this respect, (2) honeybee and Drosophila have diverged from the beetles in specific pair-rule traits during the parasegmental expression of both EVE and EN, and (3) some of these traits differ in the register of segment pairing and thus may reflect regulatory divergences at the pair-rule level between dipterans and the honeybee.

    Notes: Abstract  Hox genes are known to control the identity of serially repeated structures in arthropods and vertebrates. We analyzed the expression pattern of the Hox genes Deformed (Dfd), Sex combs reduced (Scr), Antennapedia (Antp), and Ultrabithorax/abdominal-A (Ubx/abd-A) from the honey bee Apis mellifera. We also cloned a cDNA with the complete coding region of the Antennapedia gene from Apis. Comparison with Antp proteins from other insect species revealed several regions of homology. The expression patterns of the isolated Hox genes from Apis showed that the original expression patterns of Dfd, Scr, and Antp appear between late blastoderm and early germ band stage in a temporal and spatial sequence. Each of them shows up as a belt, spanning approximately two segment anlagen, Dfd in the anterior gnathal region, Scr in the posterior gnathal and anterior thoracic region, and Antp in the thoracic region. Following expansion of the Antp domain in the abdomen as a gradient towards the posterior, Ubx/abd-A expression appears laterally in the abdomen. During gastrulation and in the germ band stage the domains of strong expression do not overlap any more, but touch each other. After gastrulation the borders of the expression domains partly correlate with parasegment and partly with segment boundaries. Laterally, gaps between the domain of each gene may show no expression of any of the genes examined.

    Notes: Summary The efficacy of extended release felodipine 10 mg (ER) o.d., a new dihydropyridine calcium antagonist, and 25 mg hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) o.d. have been compared in a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial in 28 mildly to moderately hypertensive subjects (supine diastolic blood pressure, BP, ≥95 mm Hg and ≤110 mm Hg on three separate occasions). Both drugs significantly reduced systolic and diastolic BP in the sitting position felodipine from 157.1/93.8 mm Hg at baseline to 133/78.9 mm Hg 2.5 h after medication and to 138/82.7 mm Hg after 2 weeks of treatment, and HCTZ from 156/95.6 mm Hg to 147/88.4 mm Hg 2.5 h after medication and to 149/89.5 mm Hg also after 2 weeks. A decrease of the same magnitude in standing systolic and diastolic BP was observed after both treatment regimens with the exception of diastolic BP 2.5 h after dosing with HCTZ, which was not significantly lower. At all times (2.5 h and 2 weeks), the reduction in systolic and diastolic BP was greater after felodipine compared to HCTZ. Heart rate was significantly increased after felodipine in both the sitting and standing positions, and both 2.5 h following medication and after 2 weeks of treatment. The difference between the regimens was significant only 2.5 h after dosing. Overall, felodipine 10 mg ER o.d. was superior to 25 mg HCTZ o.d. in lowering BP.

    Notes: Radiant and hybrid sintering experiments have been performed on dry and wet processednanocrystalline 3-YSZ using both a conventional single stage and a new two stage sintering cycle.Whilst densities 〉98.5% of theoretical were achievable by all combinations, a nanostructure couldonly be retained using the two stage sintering approach. With hybrid heating the average grain sizesfor die pressed samples were in the range 70 – 80 nm whilst for the more homogeneous slip castsamples a final average grain size of just 64 nm was achieved for a body with a final density of〉99%. It is believed that the primary advantage offered by hybrid heating is the ability to use amuch faster initial heating rate, 20 versus just 7oC min-1, without risking damage to the samples.Whilst detailed characterisation of the properties of these nanostructured ceramics is still underway,preliminary results have suggested that neither the hardness or toughness has been improvedcompared to conventional, submicron-sized 3-YSZ. As a result of detailed crystallographiccharacterisation this is believed to be due to a grain size dependent shift in the phase boundarycomposition for nano YSZ ceramics leading to ‘over stabilisation’ at any given yttria content

    Notes: This paper attempts to shed light on why the stand alone microwave processing of technical ceramics, despite being one of the most popular field with respect to volume of research performed, is still struggling to achieve priority status with respect to commercialisation. To obtain some answers to this enigma and determine when microwaves should be used to process technical ceramics, three case studies are explored. The conclusion is that microwaves should be used to process technical ceramics when specific advantage can be taken of the intrinsic nature of microwave energy and not simply as an alternative energy source. In addition, it is concluded that from a commercialisation view point hybrid processing is often a better approach than the use of pure microwaves

    Notes: Interpenetrating composites allow a completely 3-dimensional matrix of two phases,in this case an alumina (ceramic) and aluminium-magnesium alloy (metal), to bedeveloped. This 3-dimensionality yields a material with mechanical and physicalproperties that are superior to either the metal or ceramic individually. The compositeswere produced by heating an alumina foam and aluminium-magnesium alloystogether in flowing nitrogen to in excess of 900°C. At these temperatures the alloy isdrawn into the ceramic foam by capillary action. The infiltration process is dependenton the interaction of the alloy with the nitrogen atmosphere in the furnaces. Thiscomplex interaction and its affect on the microstructural development has beenstudied using Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) coupled with EnergyDispersive x-ray Spectroscopy (EDS)

    Notes: We compare the empirical performance of a capital certain monetary services index and an index that is extended to contain assets with substantial interest rate risk, such as unit trusts, within a cointegration money demand framework for the UK. Technological changes and innovations have increased the liquidity of risky assets and recent developments in monetary aggregation theory have made it possible to account for interest rate risk in combination with risk aversion in the construction of monetary services indices. Coefficient estimates for all systems are consistent with theory and remarkably stable. No apparent gains are noted, however, by the inclusion of 'risky' assets.

    Notes: Silicon carbide (SiC) particles were modified in situ, using Al3+ complexes in aqueous media, via control of Al(NO3)3concentration and pH. The Al3+ formed hydrolyzed complexes that adsorbed onto the charged sites on the SiC particle surfaces. As a result, the surface-modified SiC particles behaved in an alumina-like manner in the approximate pH range 5–8. The modified SiC particles were further treated with two types of polyelectrolytes that were sequentially adsorbed onto the particle surface, to give a maximum surface charge. As a result of this surface-modification process, the SiC could be dispersed with Al2O3in aqueous media without heteroaggregation.

    Notes: Abstract Polycrystalline beta-alumina ceramics containing yttria-doped zirconia particles have been produced by hot-pressing and “two-peak” sintering schedules. With the former fabrication process, both a chemical reaction involving sodium metazirconate and α-alumina, and a direct mixing route were employed. The mechanical properties of the ceramics produced by the direct mixing route were superior to those produced by the chemical route. The maximum amount of tetragonal zirconia retention, and thus fracture toughness, obtained using direct mixing occurred for additions of 4wt% yttria-doped zirconia. An increase of ∼ 124% in the fracture toughness was obtained compared with the pure beta-alumina ceramic. Transfer of this fabrication route to a pressureless sintering schedule was less successful owing to difficulties in attaining full densification. The increases in strength observed with introduction of second phase zirconia could be attributed to an improvement in the degree of densification achieved, and the maximum increase in toughness was only ∼27%.
