Notes: User interface and requirements prototyping is a requirements elicitation technique. A user interface and requirements prototype is built during the requirements engineering phase of a software system development. Along with the user interface prototype are produced various documents such as the system requirement specification. When a prototype and other documents exist, they may not describe the same functionality, particularly because there may be behaviour of the prototype, artefacts of prototyping, that may not be intended. The problem is that in later development stages, when there is a prototype and other documents, it is often difficult to reconcile the difference between the prototype and the other documents. This paper presents an approach for avoiding this difficulty. It demonstrates the approach by showing its application to parts of a real software development.

Notes: Abstract An industrial strain of Penicillium chrysogenum was subjected to carbon or nitrogen limitation in a chemostat and the response monitored in terms of the “classical” indicators of autolysis (biomass decline and ammonia release), culture degradation (as measured by image analysis) and by obtaining profiles for three classes of proteases implicated in autolysis. Under both sets of conditions (carbon or nitrogen limitation), once started, autolysis involved a succession of different protease activities. The first stages of the process of autolysis in starved chemostat cultures was associated with peaks in the activities of both serine and aspartyl proteases, coinciding with the mobilisation of endogenous energy reserves. Conversely, a peak in the activity of metalloproteases was associated with the later stages of autolysis, perhaps occurring in response to depletion of endogenous energy reserves; the activity of these enzymes led to gross culture degradation, disintegration of ordered mycelial structures and signalled the end of metabolic activity (respiration) within the culture. These findings indicate that strategies intended to control/regulate autolysis in large-scale industrial fungal cultures might profitably be focused on regulation of the activity of key classes of proteases involved in the series of events leading to culture degradation.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of phenylethylmalonamide (PEMA) were studied in 6 elderly men after oral administration of a single 400 mg dose. Peak PEMA serum levels were obtained within 4 h of intake, half-life values ranged from 30.7–57.9 h in these elderly men. The elimination half-life was twice as long when compared to a study previously performed in young volunteers.

Notes: A number of strategies for reducing supply chain demand amplificationand simultaneously improving customer service levels have been modelledand tested via dynamic simulation. To create an environment in whichsupply chain re-design methodologies may be exploited, it is necessaryto study the distribution of power and influence at individual echelonswithin the chain. Outlines current management practice in theelectronics products industry and concludes by highlighting the stepsneeded to enhance total system dynamic performance. The likely benefitsare estimated via dynamic simulation of the various phases ofre-engineering an international electronics products supply chainwherein huge improvements are predicted in the damping of upstream orderpatterns.

Notes: There are three possible outcomes following the undertaking of BPR projects. First, a BPR programme may fail in the short or long term either because it is improperly implemented or because there is no effective follow-up. Second, a BPR programme may be deemed satisfactory in outcome yet still does not appear to significantly improve bottom-line performance. Finally, there is the BPR programme which is highly successful and significantly improves the bottom-line performance. It is identifying the last category which is the subject of this paper. In our view, to maximise the probability of making a major impact on the supply chain bottom line, BPR programmes should be planned to have adequate SCOPE. This is a three-dimensional model of the change process with breadth, depth and width axes. Our approach to evaluating BPR impact is illustrated by application to the product delivery process of an electronics products supply chain. The prediction of improved performance is demonstrated via a dynamic simulation model of a real-world supply chain as a function of the particular implementation phase of the BPR programme. The eventual improvement in performance obtained after a number of years progress is very significant. Indeed, in material flow terms, it is now a structurally much improved, robust and internationally competitive supply chain.
