Abstract: This volume collects and presents the fundamentals, tools, and processes of utilizing geospatial information technologies to process remotely sensed data for use in agricultural monitoring and management. The issues related to handling digital agro-geoinformation, such as collecting (including field visits and remote sensing), processing, storing, archiving, preservation, retrieving, transmitting, accessing, visualization, analyzing, synthesizing, presenting, and disseminating agro-geoinformation have never before been systematically documented in one volume. The book is edited by International Conference on Agro-Geoinformatics organizers Dr. Liping Di (George Mason University), who coined the term “Agro-Geoinformatics” in 2012, and Dr. Berk Üstündağ (Istanbul Technical University) and are uniquely positioned to curate and edit this foundational text. The book is composed of eighteen chapters that can each stand alone but also build on each other to give the reader a comprehensive understanding of agro-geoinformatics and what the tools and processes that compose the field can accomplish. Topics covered include land parcel identification, image processing in agricultural observation systems, databasing and managing agricultural data, crop status monitoring, moisture and evapotranspiration assessment, flood damage monitoring, agricultural decision support systems and more. .

Notes: Abstract A cDNA encoding a nuclear hormone receptor of the steroid/thyroid receptor superfamily was obtained from third-stage larvae(L3) of the parasitic roundworm Strongyloides stercoralis. A recombinant clone was isolated via screening of an S. stercoralis cDNA library with a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-generated probe. The insert of 2583 bp contained the complete coding sequence of the receptor homologue. The conceptually translated amino acid sequence of this open reading frame encodes a 753-amino-acid-residue protein with an apparent molecular weight of 83.6 kDa and a predicted isoelectric point (pI) of 8.52. The coding sequence is 69% AT and the noncoding sequence is 72% AT, reflecting a characteristic A/T codon bias of S. stercoralis. In this report the amino acid sequence of the S. stercoralis nuclear hormone receptor of the steroid/thyroid receptor superfamily is compared with that of nuclear hormones of Caenorhabditis elegans, human orphan nuclear receptors, and insect ecdysone receptors. The potential role of steroids in the induction of hyperinfection syndrome is also discussed.

Description: The squid giant synapse is a well-defined experimental preparation for the study of ligand-dependant synaptic transmission. Its large size gives direct experimental access to both presynaptic and postsynaptic junctional elements, allowing direct optical, biophysical, and electrophysiological analysis of depolarization-release coupling. However, this important model has not been utilized in pharmacological studies, other than those implementable acutely in the in vitro condition. A method is presented for oral administration of bioactive substances to living squid. Electrophysiological characterization and direct determination of drug absorption into the nervous system demonstrate the administration method described here to be appropriate for pharmacological research.

Description: The Atlantic coast of North America north of Cape Hatteras has been proposed as a “hotspot” of late 20th century sea‐level rise. Here we test, using salt‐marsh proxy sea‐level records, if this coast experienced enhanced sea‐level rise over earlier multidecadal‐centennial periods. While we find in agreement with previous studies that 20th century rates of sea‐level change were higher compared to rates during preceding centuries, rates of 18th century sea‐level rise were only slightly lower, suggesting that the “hotspot” is a reoccurring feature for at least three centuries. Proxy sea‐level records from North America (Iceland) are negatively (positively) correlated with centennial changes in the North Atlantic Oscillation. They are consistent with sea‐level “fingerprints” of Arctic ice melt, and we therefore hypothesize that sea‐level fluctuations are related to changes in Arctic land‐ice mass. Predictions of future sea‐level rise should take into account these long‐term fluctuating rates of natural sea‐level change.
