Abstract: The Series The fungi represent a heterogenous assemblage of eukaryotic microorganisms and have become favored organisms for research at the cellular and molecular level. Such research involvement has been stimulated by interest in the biotechnological application of fungi in processes related to industry, agriculture and ecology. Considering both yeasts and mycelial fungi, The Mycota highlights developments in both basic and applied research and presents an overview of fungal systematics and cell structure. Foremost authorities in research on mycology have been assembled to edit and contribute to the volumes. This Volume The first section of this volume, Genetics, illustrates the basic genetic processes underlying inheritance, cell biology, metabolism and “lifestyles” of fungi. The second section, Biotechnology, addresses the applied side of fungal genetics, ranging from new tools for synthetic biology to the biotechnological potential of fungi from diverse environments. Gathering chapters written by reputed scientists, the book represents an invaluable reference guide for fungal biologists, geneticists and biotechnologists alike.

Notes: Eight metal components of 300 commercial California wines were determined by atomic absorption or emission spectroscopy. The results were catagorized by wine type (white table, red table, etc.). The value determined for the Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Pb and Zn are in acceptable ranges. Comparisons are made to recently reported values from other countries.

Notes: Summary Seed tubers of four cultivars were grown under similar conditions and harvested simulataneously. They were stored in traditional dark storage, diffused-light storage, or cold storage, and with combinations of these three methods for 150 or 230 days beginning in the hot, dry summer period. The effect of storage conditions on emergence, stem and tuber number, tuber size distribution and yield is discussed. Results suggest an optimal combination of storage method, cultivar choice, and sprout management practices may be achieved to obviate the need for cold storage in warm climates. Emergence and yield were consistently good for the 150-day storage period when traditional storage was followed by diffused-light storage. The sam technology gave promising results for the 230-day period with cultivars Claustar or Désirée when seed was desprouted prior to planting.

Notes: The chloride of 3-chloro-1,2,4-benzotriazine-1-oxide-7-carboxylic acid has been prepared, and from this a number of derivatives of 3-hydroxy-1,2,4-benzotriazine-1-oxide-7-carboxylic acid were synthesized by stepwise substitution of the two halogen atoms. This acid chloride has further been used for linking dye components containing amino groups, and for the synthesis of reactive dyes whose suitability for dyeing cellulose and wool has been examined.
