Sn2(OAc)6 has been prepared by reacting Sn2(C6H5)6 with glacial acetic acid at 120°. The unexpected stability of this compounds suggests that some acetate groups are acting as bridging groups between the tin atoms. This hypothesis is supported by the reaction of Sn2(OAc)6 with hydrogen chloride in ether at -100° which gives very stable Sn2Cl4(OAc)2. The last two acetate groups are replaced only by liquid hydrogen chloride at -100°, Sn2Cl6 being produced. This compound is stable only at very low temperatures and above -65° it disproportionates into SnCl2 and SnCl4.

Durch Umsetzung von Hexaphenyl-distannan mit Eisessig bei 120° läßt sich ein Hexaaceto-distannan Sn2(OA)6 gewinnen, dessen unerwartet große Stabilität für eine innermolekulare Stabilisierung durch Chalatbildung spricht. In übereinstimmung mit dieser komplexen Formulierung führt die Einwirkung von überschüssigem chlorwasserstoff auf Sn2(OAc)6 in Äther bei - 100° nur zur Substitution von vier Actatgruppen durch Chloratome und damit zur Bildung eines - ebebfalls sehr beständigen - Tetrachloro-diace-tato-distannans Sn2Cl4(OAc)2. Die beiden letzten Acetatgruppen dieses Distannans lassen sich bei - 100° erst durch Einwirkung von flüssigem Chlorwasserstoff gegen Chloratome austauschen, wobei ein sehr unbeständiges Hexachloro-distannan Sn2Cl6 entsteht, das nur bei tiefen Temperaturen (〈- 65°) existenzfähig ist und sich oberhalb von - 65° zu SnCl2 und SnCl4 disproportioniert.
