Isomeric N-aryltetrazoles. V. Solvent and Substituent Induced 1H Chemical ShiftsThe 1H n.m.r. spectra of some isomeric N-aryltetrazoles have been measured using four solvents (CDCl3, (CD3)2CO, (CD3)2SO and C5D5N). Solvent induced chemical shifts (SIS) of H-5 ring protons of the 1-aryltetrazoles are considerably higher than those of the 2-aryltetrazoles. This different property of the isomers may be a useful tool in structure determination of N-substituted tetrazoles. A brief discussion is given concerning factors possibly causing SIS in dipolar solvents. The H-5 chemical shifts of both 1- and 2-aryltetrazoles correlate linearly with H-4 chemical shifts of monosubstituted benzenes, Hammett σp values of the substituents R, and HMO electron densities at C-5. The slopes of the regression lines are found to be relatively strong dependent on the solvent used.
Notes:
