    Notes: Abstract Sputtering of solid surfaces by using a focused ion beam is the basis for secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and sputtered neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS). The ion bombardment initiates not only redistribution of sample atoms but also massive changes in the surface and near surface composition of the bombarded area due to the sputter process and implantation of the primary ions. Changes in the matrix-composition affects the secondary ion yields and therefore a steady state (sputter equilibrium) has to be reached before SIMS data can give quantifiable results. SNMS is much less affected by those yield effects and therefore a combination of SIMS and SNMS can establish a basis for interpretation of SIMS data before the steady state is reached. In order to determine the effects of primary ion incorporation, we applied different primary ion species successively to generate different equilibria. An oxygen ion beam oxidizes the sample surface and by using a rare gas primary ion (PI) this oxide can be removed and analyzed.

    Notes: Abstract A radiofrequency (rf) spark discharge in vacuum developing across the surface of dielectrics – a so-called gliding spark – has been applied to the direct mass spectrometric trace analysis of nonconducting materials. The special configuration of the electrodes strengthened the electric field over the surface of a nonconducting sample and created optimum conditions for the sputtering and ionization of the sample material. Mass spectrometric investigations of the charge composition of atomic ion and molecular ion formation in radiofrequency gliding spark plasma showed a significant difference to that of the original rf spark discharge between two conducting electrodes. The analytical figures of merit (reproducibility, relative sensitivity factors and detection limits of chemical elements) of gliding spark source mass spectrometry have been studied by using the glass standard reference materials NIST SRM 610 and 611 for the determination of trace elements in glass matrix.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of an epitaxial 20 nm thick CoSi2 layer on the diffusion of B and Sb in Si is investigated during oxidation and is compared to thermal diffusion in Si. B and Sb doping superlattices (DSLs) were grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). They consisted of six spikes with peak concentrations of about 1018 cm–3 (B) and about 1019 cm–3 (Sb) and peak centres spaced 100 nm apart. The shallowest spike was capped with 100 nm of Si followed by 20 nm of CoSi2 grown by molecular beam allotaxy (MBA). Oxidation in dry O2 and annealing in pure N2 were performed at temperatures of 800 °C to 1200 °C. Concentration depth profiles were measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The results showed that the diffusion of B and Sb in Si was markedly different for specimens with or without a CoSi2 layer. Oxidation enhanced diffusion (OED) of B and oxidation retarded diffusion (ORD) of Sb was observed for specimens without a CoSi2 layer. The effect of CoSi2 layer was a strong retardation of B diffusion and an enhancement of Sb diffusion. The B diffusivity was retarded by a factor of 2–10 as compared to the thermal diffusivity and by a factor of 20–100 as compared to the corresponding diffusivity for oxidation of Si without a CoSi2 layer. Sb diffusivity was enhanced by a factor of 2 with respect to thermal diffusivity and by about a factor of 5 as compared to the case without a CoSi2 layer.

    Notes: Abstract The lowest possible sample weight for performing multielemental trace element analysis on environmental and biological samples by ICP-MS has been investigated. The certified reference materials Bovine Liver NIST SRM 1577b, Human Hair NCS DC 73347 and Oriental Tobacco Leaves CTA-OTL-1 were applied at sample weights (1, 5, 20 and 50 mg aliquots, n = 10) which were significantly lower than those recommended with most recoveries in the range of 95–110%. Samples were digested in a mixture of nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen fluoride by closed-vessel microwave digestion. Multielemental analysis was performed with an optimized ICP-QMS method. Aqueous standard solutions were applied for external calibration with rhodium as the internal standard element. The detection limits varied between 0.02–¶0.38 μg/g for Li, Na, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba and Pb, and up to 1.92 μg/g for Mg, Al, Ca, Fe and Ni. Digested human plasma samples were spiked with multielemental solution (0.5–10 μg/L) to test the analytical method and the recoveries were 95–105% for most analytes. Our results show that in the case of homogeneous SRMs it is possible to use them in very low amounts (1–5 mg) for method development and quality control.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of Ag additions on the oxidation behavior of γ-TiAl hasbeen studied. The materials investigated containing 47–50 at.% Aland 0–5 at.% Ag were tested with respect to oxidation resistanceduring exposure in air at 800°C. The exposures up to around 1600 hrshowed that suitable Ag additions can promote formation of long-term,protective, alumina scales on γ-TiAl alloys. Extensive analysesof the oxidation products using optical metallography SEM, XRD, EPMA,and SIMS revealed that Ag stabilizes the Z-phase (Ti5Al3O2) in thesubscale-depletion layer thereby preventing formation of α2-Ti3Alas well as Ti-rich nitrides, which are responsible for the destructionof alumina scales in common γ -TiAl alloys. The best results wereobtained for the alloy Ti–50Al–2Ag; even during exposures aslong as around 1600 hr, this alloy still appeared to form a stable aluminalayer. It was found that high Ag additions of 5% were detrimental afterlonger exposure times due to extensive Ag precipitationat the interface between the alloy and depletion layer, resulting inlocalized formation of rapidly growing, mixed-oxide scales.

    Notes: Abstract Radio-frequency glow discharge mass spectrometry (RF GDMS) has been applied to the determination of trace elements in ceramic perovskite layers (La0.65Sr0.3MnO3) using synthetic standards. For the preparation of these standards high-purity powder of the basic material (La0.65Sr0.3MnO3) was doped with trace elements in concentrations from 20 to 500 μg/g and the mixture was pressed to compact samples. The resulting calibration curves and the calculated relative sensitivity factors (RSF) differed only from 0.4 to 2 for different elements. For nearly all elements the standard deviations in the determination of trace elements in La0.65Sr0.3MnO3 were better than 15% and detection limits (using the 3σ-criterion) were below 10 μg/g. Changes of the discharge parameters (RF power, pressure of the discharge gas (Ar) in the RF glow discharge) have no significant influence on the sensitivity to elements.

    Notes: Abstract A radiofrequency glow discharge ion source designed in our laboratory was coupled to a commercial double-focusing mass spectrometer in the original mode with an inductively coupled plasma ion source. This modification of rf GDMS extends the analytical capability of the mass spectrometer with ICP for the analysis of liquids to the direct analysis of insulating, semiconducting and conducting solids in the whole range of conductivity.The analytical procedure of the depth profiling analysis of the oxide coating of chromium-based alloys used as interconnectors in SOFC technology was discussed. The investigation of the depth profiles of Ni and Co in the thick oxide layers on the surface of Ni- and Co-doped alloys showed that the incorporation of these elements into the oxide during oxidation at 950°C is uniform.

    Notes: Abstract An analytical procedure has been developed for the determination of spallation nuclides in an irradiated tantalum target using HPLC coupled on-line to ICP-MS after dissolution and separation of the tantalum matrix. Pieces of tantalum were taken from different locations of the irradiated tantalum target which had been used as the target material in a spallation neutron source. Tantalum was dissolved in a HNO3/HF mixture and the tantalum matrix was separated by liquid-liquid extraction so that only the spallation nuclides were left in the sample solutions. The major fraction of the spallation nuclides in the tantalum target are lanthanide metals in the μg g–1 concentration range determined in the present study. Additional reaction products are formed by the irradiation of trace impurities in the original tantalum target. The nuclide abundances of the lanthanide metals measured in the tantalum target differ significantly from the natural isotopic composition so that a lot of isobaric interferences of long-lived radionuclides and stable isotopes in the mass spectrum are to be expected. Therefore, all the lanthanide metals had to be separated chemically prior to their mass spectrometric determination. The separation of all rare earth elements was performed by ion chromatography on-line to ICP-MS. The nuclide abundances of each lanthanide were determined using a sensitive double-focusing sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. The nuclide abundances of the lanthanides in the irradiated tantalum target calculated theoretically and the experimental results obtained by on-line HPLC-ICP-MS proved to be in good agreement.

    Notes: Abstract An analytical method for the ultratrace and isotopic analysis of uranium in radioactive waste samples using a double-focusing sector field ICP mass spectrometer is described. In high-purity water a detection limit for uranium in the lowest fg/mL range has been achieved. Under optimum experimental conditions (235U/238U ≈ 1), the precision in 235U/238U isotopic ratio determinations has been determined as 0.07% RSD. With the isotopic standard U-020 (235U/238U = 0.0208) a precision of 0.23% RSD at the 100 pg/mL level using ultrasonic nebulization has been achieved. With 234U/238U isotopic ratios of down to 10–5, the values obtained by double-focusing sector field ICP-MS and alpha spectrometry were in agreement.
