    Description: The growth rate of a manganese nodule from the South Atlantic Ocean (Rio Grande Ridge) has been determined using a 10Be profile as measured with a Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. This rate is 4.5 mm /My. A correlation may exist between the 10Be flux and the Mn flux to nodules.

    Description: The causes for the formation of large igneous provinces and hotspot trails are still a matter of considerable dispute. Seismic tomography and other studies suggest that hot mantle material rising from the core-mantle boundary (CMB) might play a significant role in the formation of such hotspot trails. An important area to verify this concept is the South Atlantic region, with hotspot trails that spatially coincide with one of the largest low-velocity regions at the CMB, the African large low shear-wave velocity province. The Walvis Ridge started to form during the separation of the South American and African continents at ca. 130 Ma as a consequence of Gondwana breakup. Here, we present the first deep-seismic sounding images of the crustal structure from the landfall area of the Walvis Ridge at the Namibian coast to constrain processes of plume-lithosphere interaction and the formation of continental flood basalts (Paraná and Etendeka continental flood basalts) and associated intrusive rocks. Our study identified a narrow region (〈100 km) of high-seismic-velocity anomalies in the middle and lower crust, which we interpret as a massive mafic intrusion into the northern Namibian continental crust. Seismic crustal reflection imaging shows a flat Moho as well as reflectors connecting the high-velocity body with shallow crustal structures that we speculate to mark potential feeder channels of the Etendeka continental flood basalt. We suggest that the observed massive but localized mafic intrusion into the lower crust results from similar-sized variations in the lithosphere (i.e., lithosphere thickness or preexisting structures).

    Description: High-velocity lower crust (HVLC) and seawarddipping reflector (SDR) sequences are typical features of volcanic rifted margins. However, the nature and origin of HVLC is under discussion. Here we provide a comprehensive analysis of deep crustal structures in the southern segment of the South Atlantic and an assessment of HVLC along the margins. Two new seismic refraction lines off South America fill a gap in the data coverage and together with five existing velocity models allow for a detailed investigation of the lower crustal properties on both margins. An important finding is the major asymmetry in volumes of HVLC on the conjugate margins. The seismic refraction lines across the South African margin reveal cross-sectional areas of HVLC 4 times larger than at the South American margin, a finding that is opposite to the asymmetric distribution of the flood basalts in the Paraná–Etendeka Large Igneous Province. Also, the position of the HVLC with respect to the SDR sequences varies consistently along both margins. Close to the Falkland–Agulhas Fracture Zone in the south, a small body of HVLC is not accompanied by SDRs. In the central portion of both margins, the HVLC is below the inner SDR wedges while in the northern area, closer to the Rio Grande Rise-Walvis Ridge, large volumes of HVLC extend far seaward of the inner SDRs. This challenges the concept of a simple extrusive/intrusive relationship between SDR sequences and HVLC, and it provides evidence for formation of the HVLC at different times during the rifting and breakup process. We suggest that the drastically different HVLC volumes are caused by asymmetric rifting in a simple-shear-dominated extension.

    Notes: Übersicht Es wird ein Ortungsgerät beschrieben, das nach dem Hochspannungsimpuls-Verfahren arbeitet und zur Einmessung von Fehlern an Hochspannungsfreileitungen und an Kabeln entwickelt wurde1. Auf einfache Handhabung des Ortungsgerätes und einfache Bauteilgestaltung wurde besonderer Wert gelegt. Die Fehleranzeige erfolgt ballistisch an einem Lichtstrich-Galvanometer mit Spannbandlagerung, dessen Skala unmittelbar in km geeicht ist. Den Hochspannungsimpuls, der zugleich Meßimpuls ist, erzeugt eine Funkenstrecke durch Entladung eines Kondensators. Eine Anpassung des Ortungsgeräts an den jeweiligen Wellenwiderstand der zu messenden Leitung ist nicht erforderlich, da zur Fehlerortsbestimmung lediglich das Zeitintervall zwischen dem Ausgangsimpuls und dessen erstem Echo am Meßort erfaßt wird. Dies geschieht durch ein näher beschriebenes Kurzzeitmeßgerät mit Thyratronsteuerung.     Notes: Zusammenfassung Während der Lyse von Bac. megaterium-Protoplasten durch Rindergalle bildet sich ein zähviscöses Desoxyribonucleoproteid-Gel, in welchem sich die lichtmikroskopisch sichtbaren Lipoidkörperchen des obengenannten Organismus zu geraden, unverzweigten Ketten von etlichen Hundert Mikron Länge angeordnet hatten. Es handelt sich bei den beobachteten Gebilden um lichtmikroskopisch unsichtbare, außerordentlich lange Desoxyribonucleoproteid-Aggregate, an denen die Lipoidkörperchen adsorptiv haften und dadurch die Aggregate markieren. An Hand von mikroskopischen Beobachtungen wurden einige physikalische Eigenschaften der Gebilde studiert. Die hinsichtlich des Zustandekommens der markierten Desoxyribonucleoproteid-Aggregate entwickelte Hypothese wird eingehend diskutiert.

    Notes: A family study on Gm determinants is reported starting from the pair: mother Gm(a - x - f + b +)/child Gm(a + x - f - b -). The genotypes derived from the results show the probable influence of the inactive allele Gm- described earlier. The importance of this and similar findings for our knowledge of the Gm system and for its use in practical medico legal work is stressed.
