Notes: The frequencies of HLA-DQA1, DQB1 and DRB1 alleles were compared between 50 Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Melitus (IDDM) patients and 49 healthy controls in the Greek population. Statistically significant difference in the frequencies of HLA-DQA1*0501-DQB1*0201 (P = 10-4), DQA1*0301-DQB1*0201 (P= 0.01) and DQA P0301-DQB 1*0302 (P= 0.001) were observed. The DRB1*0405-DQA1*0301-DQB 1*0201 was the only DR, DQ combination significantly associated with the disease. The unexpected increase of DRB1*0405 observed in the Greek IDDM may suggest as reported in Chinese and Japanese IDDM a contribution of DRβ and DQα in susceptibility. Moreover, in contrast to the Asians, in the Greek, the DRβ, DQα are found with the usual DQβ 57-ve.

Notes: Summary The mean daily march of pressure (hourly values) for each month of the 96 year period 1894–1989 in Athens, Greece is studied using Fourier analysis. The annual variation of the harmonic parameters (amplitude, time of maximum,x andy-components) is examined. The globally excited 2nd and 3rd harmonics show in general the same behaviour as in other places of the Earth. Similar features show the corresponding parameters of the daily solar radiation march. The first harmonic displays some local characteristics. The long period fluctuations study revealed statistically significant trends in most parameters of the 2nd harmonic, most strikingly the 0.5 h shift in the time of its maximum during the 20th century. Power spectrum analysis showed the existence of a biennial oscillation inB 1, thex-component of the first harmonic, but this oscillation is mainly confined to the second half of the entire period. A periodicity of about 6 years which could be associated to the Southern Oscillation was also found inB 1 while inA 1, they-component, a periodicity close to the 11-year solar cycle and another one close to the nutation of the Earth's axis are present. The lunar tides are too small to be detected by the same methods. However the semilunar tide was revealed to be 10–20 times smaller than the semisolar.

Notes: Summary In the following paper the eddy thermal coefficient in water is estimated. The experiment took place at Lake Washington, Seattle, U.S.A. Water temperature in surface layer, wave frequency as well as all the other meteorological parameters were recorded simultaneously. Measurements have been processed by a computer program. Taking into account that the coefficient is depended on weather conditions the results are considered satisfactory.

Notes: Summary The statistical relationship between the metereological conditions and the population of the air-borne fungi of the Athens metropolitan area were considered. It was found that during autumn and winter the number of suspended microfungi was more than double that which occurred during spring and summer. The fungal content appeared to be correlated positively with humidity and negatively with temperature, although during the analysis of the six predominant genera some exceptions were found to the general form of the results.

Notes: Summary In the research programme of the Department of Microbiology of the Athens University the nature of the mycological flora of the Athenian air was studied. The research took place during the calendar year 1971. The open air was sampled twice weekly from two observation stations. The open plate technique was used, Petri dishes containing Sabouraud's agar being exposed for 15 minutes. A total of 180 plates were exposed, and 1714 fungal colonies were isolated; these were subcultured and identified as follows: Altemaria alternata, Alternaria Sp. (representing a common transitional form towards the genus Ulocladium), Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus terreus, Chrysosporium Sp., Candida Sp., Geotrichum Sp., Mucor Sp., Penicillium patulum, Penicillium Sp., Rhodotorula rubra, Saccharomyces Sp., Streptomyces Sp., Trichosporon Sp. and Ulocladium oudemansii. The genus Alternaria was most frequently isolated, representing 38% of the total colonies. Other genera occured in the following proportions: Penicillium 27%, Aspergillus 13%, Candida 9%, Rhodotorula 6% and Mucor 1%. Species of other genera accounted for 6% of colonies, including 4% which were classified as Mycelia Sterilia. It is of considerable interest that the most frequently isolated species are considered as allergens. An appropriate line of further investigations would appear to be the preparation of antigens, application of skin tests and classification of allergic reactions after relating laboratory findings to clinical observations.

Notes: Abstract To identify the most suitable method to continuously monitor antibiotic prescriptions in a United Kingdom hospital, a study was performed in three phases over four years between 1985 to 1989 in a Liverpool teaching hospital. The aim of the study was to perfect a method to collect and analyse hospital-wide antibiotic prescribing data. The emphasis was laid on identifying problems and practicalities and also to minimize manpower and resource requirements. The data were used to illustrate the effect of the hospital's antibiotic policy on prescribing trends. The policy recommendation that co-trimoxazole be substituted by trimelhoprim was only partially adhered to because Augmentin® was the other replacement antibiotic in a significant number of cases. Therefore, it is important to monitor the effects of target drug programmes on all antibiotics since certain sequelae may be unexpected. A total of 1,804, 2,526 and 3,226 antibiotic prescriptions were collected and analysed during phases I, II and III respectively. 72–73% of the prescriptions were for the treatment of infection which equated to 81–89% of the total antibiotic cost. Therefore, cost control campaigns need to concentrate on infection treatment as opposed to prophylaxis. Specifically, respiratory tract, septicaemia and pyrexias of unknown origin account for the bulk of antibiotic expenditure. The method for phases I and II was multidisciplinary and very time-consuming. Phase III was very fast in operation, with data collection and analysis being performed on a single computer dedicated for the task. The minimum staff required to monitor all antibiotic prescriptions is one full-time pharmacist and clerk. Continuous intensive antibiotic monitoring in United Kingdom hospitals will not be feasible until antibiotic prescription forms are introduced on all wards.

Notes: Summary This paper deals with the surface pressure covariability over the Altantic/European sector of the Northern Hemisphere, using monthly grid point data for the 100 year period 1890–1989. Factor analysis is applied to 90 grid point time series for January, February, July, and August. The initial 90 pressure variables can be reduced to 7–8 factors in winter and 10 in summer. A winter teleconnection was identified, known as the seesaw phenomenon, between the Icelandic low and the Azores subtropical anticyclone. In order to define the centers of action for temperature, winter precipitation and summer northerly wind frequency (etesian days) in Athens and in the Aegean sea, the variability of the factor scores and of these weather elements is compared. It is shown that the center of action for temperature in Athens is found to be in north and northwest Europe (centered over southern Scandinavia). For winter precipitation, the center of action is located in the west and southwest Mediterranean and northwest Africa. Finally, for the etesian winds frequency variability, this center of action is found over the northern Adriatic and northern former Yugoslavia, while there is no evidence of influence by the southwest Asia thermal low.

Notes: Summary The climatological parameters of a station are, in general, intercorrelated to various degrees (e.g. cloudiness with sunshine duration or possibly rainfall with temperature). In this work, 15 climatological parameters of the National Observatory of Athens are distributed in groups where the contained parameters are highly covariant. This classification is achieved using P-mode Factor Analysis, based on the monthly values for the period 1931–1992. Using several known criteria, we found up to four significant factors. The first two are the most important ones including the “temperature” and the “precipitation” parameters, respectively, with loading values above 0.85. The other two are weaker and variable, depending on the month. Finally, climatic trends of the grouped parameters (factors) are examined and the result compared with those of studies using classical methods.

Notes: Summary This study deals with the annual variation of pressure over the Mediterranean area using monthly values from 24 stations, for a period of 22 years. The Azores and the Siberian anticyclones as well as the low pressure system of SW-Asia are responsible for the observed distribution pattern of the pressure over the area and for the seasonal changes at each station. Fourier analysis shows that for Central Mediterranean stations, which record two minima and two maxima of pressure during the year, the amplitude of the second harmonic is smaller than the amplitude of the third.
