Abstract: This book covers advances in the field of karst from a variety of perspectives to facilitate knowledge and promote interaction between disciplines. New methods are addressed that advance data collection, analysis, and interpretation in a wide range of karst contexts. Case studies are presented to provide examples of advancing science. Issues addressed include karst hydrogeology (water resources assessment, groundwater pollution and protection), methods to study karst aquifers (based on hydrodynamic, hydrochemistry, isotopes, dye tracing, geophysical surveys, and modeling techniques), karst geomorphology and landscape, mining and engineering in karst media (tunnels, dams, etc.), and karst cavities (touristic caves, natural heritage). This book is a resource for scientists around the world to compare problems, results, and solutions. Likewise, the examples included are used in policy decision making in karst regions. Finally, the contributions are used as a tool for university teaching.

Notes: The effect of capping with Cu, Au and Pt of an array of Co nanoparticles is revised. The magnetic surface anisotropy KS was found to be the dominant contribution to theeffective anisotropy Keff of the particles. Recent X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism(XMCD) measurements show that there is hybridization between the 3d Co electronsand the d and 4p electrons of the capping metal. By comparison to the mechanismswhich give rise to the surface anisotropy in thin films, it is argued that this hybridizationgoverns the modification of KS, and hence, of Keff

Notes: Low-temperature specific heat measurements on NdNiO3 evidence the onset of Nd cooperative ordering at TN2=0.77 K. Because of the particular arrangement of the Ni magnetic moments, half of the Nd ions have an antiferromagnetically compensated environment while the other half have a noncompensated one. We show that both types of Nd ions are affected by a different but non-negligible Nd–Ni exchange field, in contrast with the current model used in literature.© 2000 American Institute of Physics.
