    Description: The Ningaloo coast of north-western Australia (eastern Indian Ocean) hosts one of the world’s longest and most extensive fringing coral reef systems, along with globally-significant abundances of large marine fauna such as whale sharks. These characteristics — which have contributed to its inscription on the World Heritage list — exist because of the unique climatic, geomorphologic and oceanographic conditions. The region is hot and arid, so runoff of water from land is low, facilitating clear water that allows corals to grow close to the shore. The poleward-flowing Leeuwin Current is an important influence, bringing warm water and generally suppressing coastal upwelling. During the austral summer, strong southerly winds generate the equatorward-flowing Ningaloo Current on the inner shelf — this current facilitates sporadic upwelling events that enhance concentrations of nutrients, which in turn enhances pelagic primary productivity that supports the reef’s biota. The coast has experienced several marine heatwaves since 2011 that have caused mortality of corals, and probably seagrass, albeit relatively less than elsewhere along the coast. Wind-generated surface waves break over the fringing reef crest, causing cooling currents that tend to dampen warming — although this mechanism seems not to have prevented some areas from experiencing damaging heat, and corals in places that do not experience the wave-generated currents have experienced substantial mortality. Herbivores, from fish to green turtles, are abundant, and in the lagoon extensive stands of large brown algae provide an important habitat for newly-recruited fish. There has been a decline in abundance of some fish. Predictions of future pressures include a weaker but more variable Leeuwin Current, and increased human use. The ability of Ningaloo’s ecosystems to withstand growing pressures will depend partly on the rate and magnitude of global warming, but also on actions that manage local pressures from increasing human use. These actions will rely on continued science to provide the evidence needed to identify the pressures, the changes they create and the ways that we can mitigate them.

    Notes: The removal of H2O molecules from their |04〉− vibrational state in collisions with H atoms can occur both by reaction, producing OH(v=0)+H2, and by nonreactive relaxation. We report an experimental measurement of the fraction (freac) that occurs by reaction. The value of freac is determined by comparing the yields of OH from three experiments in which the same concentration of H2O(|04〉−) is prepared by overtone absorption of pulsed laser radiation and OH(v=0) is produced: (i) solely by the H+H2O(|04〉−) reaction; (ii) solely by the photodissociation of H2O(|04〉−) at 266 nm; and (iii) both by the photodissociation of H2O(|04〉−) and by the subsequent reaction of a fraction of the remaining H2O(|04〉−) with H atoms. Analysis of these experiments shows that freac=(0.34±0.11). The experimental results are compared with the results of two kinds of scattering calculations performed on a potential energy surface developed recently, specifically with this problem in mind. Using the vibrational coupled-channel infinite-order-sudden (VCC-IOS) method, rate coefficients have been calculated for individual vibrationally inelastic processes and then summed to find the rate coefficient (krelaxH) for total nonreactive relaxation from the |04〉− state. The quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) method has been used to calculate the rate coefficient (kreac) for reaction between H atoms and H2O(|04〉−). Both the calculated rate coefficient (i.e., krelaxH+kreac) for total loss from H2O(|04〉−) and the calculated branching ratio, freac=kreac/(krelaxH+kreac)=0.38, are in quite good agreement with the experimental values. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A theoretical analysis of single-barrier thermionic emission cooling in semiconducting materials is performed using Fermi–Dirac statistics. Both maximum cooling and coefficient of performance are evaluated. It is shown that the performance of a thermionic refrigerator is governed by the same materials factor as thermoelectric devices. For all known materials, single-barrier thermionic refrigeration is less effective and less efficient than thermoelectric refrigeration. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Cytokines play a critical role in orchestrating and perpetuating inflammation in asthmatic airways and several specific cytokine and chemokine inhibitors are now in development for the treatment of asthma. Inhibition of IL-4 with soluble IL-4 receptors has shown promising early results in asthma. Anti-IL-5 antibody is very effective at inhibiting peripheral blood and airway eosinophils but does not appear to be effective in symptomatic asthma. Inhibitory cytokines, such as IL-10, interferons, and IL-12 are less promising because systemic delivery produces intolerable side effects. Inhibition of TNF-alpha may be useful in severe asthma. Many chemokines are involved in the inflammatory response of asthma, and small-molecule inhibitors of chemokine receptors are in development. CCR3 antagonists are now in clinical development for the treatment of asthma. Because so many cytokines are involved in asthma, drugs that inhibit the synthesis of multiple cytokines may prove to be more useful. Several such classes of drug are now in clinical development, and the risk of side effects with these nonspecific inhibitors may be reduced by the inhaled route of delivery.
