Notes: Summary Herein we develop a linear one-dimensional model for impulse propagation in fluidfilled tubes. Area changes are related to pressure changes by means of convolution integrals of the creep or relaxation function for the tube wall material. The model is employed to study the propagation of pressure and flow pulses along initially uniform tubes and their subsequent interaction with various junctions characteristic of the arterial system.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Here we study impact-initiated disturbances in fluid-filled elastic tubes. The undeformed tube diameter, wall thickness, and elastic modulus of the tube material are assumed to be functions of the distance along the centre line of the tube. The linearized version of the governing equations are solved by the Laplace transform, which is inverted by means of an approximate method. The original non-linear system of governing equations is solved numerically by the method of characteristics. Relationships between the axial fluid velocity and axial coordinate as well as between velocity and time are displayed for fixed values of time and axial coordinate respectively for the linear and nonlinear theory for ease of comparison.

Notes: Abstract Here we study transient elastic wave propagation in inhomogeneous conical shells. The uniaxial theory is employed and two separate techniques are used for extracting information about the stress field for impact problems. Firstly the formal Karal-Keller method is used enabling us to directly determine asymptotic wavefront expansions for the stress field. A transform technique, based on Eason's [1], is then used to obtain conditions on the physical parameters of the medium which give solutions to the governing equation in terms of Bessel functions and some particular problems are discussed. Previously unknown simple closed-form solutions are obtained. Our results have application to the propagation of waves in filamentary cones of constant wall thickness or in homogeneous cones having an axial temperature gradient.

Notes: Summary Bergman-type series solutions involving iterated complementary error integrals are constructed for nonlinear boundary-value problems associated with heat conduction in a region bounded internally by a cylindrical or spherical surface. In particular, a small-time solution is developed when the nonlinear boundary condition is of the Stefan-Boltzmann type. This solution is extended via Padé approximants.

Notes: Summary Here we employ an experimentally tested theory of wave propagation in liquid filled distensible tubes to study the interaction of periodic pressure waves with a finite segment of tubing whose characteristic impedance differs from those of the adjoining tubes. Such a tube system occurs when surgical bypass techniques are employed in the arterial system. In this case the source of the pressure pulse (the heart) is periodic and reflections from the insert could reinforce subsequent pulses arriving from the heart causing abnormally high pressures in the adjoining artery. This paper sheds some light on this phenomenon.

Notes: Summary Here we study impact-initiated disturbances propagating from a cylindrical cavity in orthotropic cylindrically anisotropic inhomogeneous elastic materials. Employing a transform technique we ascertain conditions on the various parameters of the medium which, when satisfied, enable us to express the solutions for impact problems in terms of modified Bessel functions. From these we generate asymptotic wavefront expansions and exact closed-form solutions. A formal technique for directly generating such expansions is also employed to solve a variety of problems. Comparisons of results obtained by the two methods are included and an appendix contains a rigorous verification of the leading term in the formal expansion.

Notes: Summary A detailed study is presented of cylindrical shear waves in inhomogeneous Maxwellian viscoelastic materials whose parameters depend continuously on a single radial coordinate. A formal asymptotic technique is employed to investigate various impact problems. Rigorous arguments are then used to show that the formal technique gives results that are asymptotic to the exact solution even when boundaries or interfaces are present. Simple termination in the Karal-Keller series is shown to be associated with the Baecklund transformation method.
