    Notes: Abstract A new method for the calibration of a superconducting gravity meter is described, in which a 273 Kg annular mass is placed around the meter and is moved up and down. The geometry of the apparatus is easy to model and the accuracy in the computation of the gravity variation induced by the mass, 6.7µgal, is limited only by the accuracy in the knowledge of value of the gravitational constant. Measurements done in ‘91 and ‘92 for the calibration of the instrument GWR-T015 are described. The calibration factor has been determined with a precision of about 0.3%.

    Notes: In this paper we develop simulation techniques in order to evaluate single and double barrier options with general features. Our method is based on Sharp Large Deviation estimates, which allow one to improve the usual Monte Carlo procedure. Numerical results are provided and show the validity of the proposed simulation algorithm.

    Notes: Geodetic evidence of crustal deformation in the Ionian area detected by GPS surveys is given in this paper. A network consisting of nine geodetic sites crossing the Ionian sea from Calabria (southern Italy) to northwestern Greece was repeatedly surveyed, starting in 1991, within the framework of the TYRGEONET project. The results, obtained from processing data from three GPS campaigns performed on the same network in 1991. 1994 and recently in 1995, show significant changes in the positions of five sites. The deformations in terms of displacements (coordinate differences), are obtained by applying a rigorous statistical approach that analyses their significance by an original iterative procedure based on the classical F (Fisher) test.Although more substantial geophysical conclusions require more observations, the estimated relative displacement pattern is generally coherent with the features of the main tectonic structures identified for this area. The detected deformations for the Greek sites confirm the activity of the Kephalonia right-lateral transform fault, and a right-lateral motion of the Mattinata fault (northern Apulia) seems to have been detected by the Italian sites. Moreover, within the time span analysed, the site of Matera shows a different behaviour from the three Adriatic sites (Tremiti, M.S. Angelo and Specchia Cristi), since relative displacements among Matera and these sites were detected. This fact may indicate the weakness of the assumption, reported in some papers, that Matera could be a representative site of the motion of the whole Adriatic plate. Furthermore, the site of Specchia Cristi shows the maximum relative displacement in the network, with a vector magnitude of about 5 cm with a 3 cm confidence interval at the 95 per cent level. Therefore, even if some additional GPS observations are needed to achieve a clearer picture of the tectonic behaviour of the Ionian Sea area, the detected relative displacement pattern of the Italian sites agrees with a possible rotational behaviour of the Apulian platform with respect to the Adriatic plate, as already hypothesized by Finetti (1982).

We are motivated by the study of overflows in a buffer whose input is modeled as a Markov fluid.

    Notes: Abstract This article is divided into two parts: in the first we give some results about renewal and normality of a recurrent random walk (r.w.) on an abelian group, without the Harris hypothesis, which will extend the theorems of S.C. Port and C.J. Stone ([8]) to a larger class of functions. They are stated in the Theorems 1.14 and 1.15. The technique will be to approximate the recurrent r.w. by a Harris recurrent r.w., for which the recent results of A. Brunel and D. Revuz ([2–4]) hold. the second part the results of the first part are extended to a particular class of nonabelian groups. The author wishes to thank A.     Notes: Abstract Winterhardiness is a basic trait for successful winter survival barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) crop. Freezing tolerance, a fundamental component of winterhardiness, is based on an inducible process known as hardening or cold acclimation that occurs when plants are exposed to low non-freezing temperatures. In the recent years, many temperature-dependent genes specifically expressed during hardening have been isolated. Current data on relationship between gene expression and cold tolerance are mostly based on plants grown and hardened under environmentally controlled conditions and, usually, over a short period of time. In order to verify whether variations in the molecular response to cold are likely to be of significant adaptive value under natural environments, we have followed the accumulation of several COR genes ( pt59, pao86 and paf93) and proteins (COR14a and COR14b) during the 1996/97 and 97/98 winter seasons in barley cultivars with contrasting winterhardiness capacity grown under field conditions. In the 1996/97 experiment, a winter cultivar Onice and a spring cultivar Gitane were tested for the accumulation of the cold-regulated genes and proteins. The ability of the plants to promote a strong molecular response to cold was found to be associated with the winterhardiness capacity of the two cultivars. This result was further tested in the winter season 1997/98 using 10 barley varieties. All winter cultivars showed high accumulation of the cold-regulated proteins COR14a and COR14b, while some variations for this character were detected in the spring cultivars suggesting that the selection for winter survival has been effective to fix the high COR14 accumulation capacity. We conclude that a high level of COR14 may be a component the winter survival capacity of barley.

    Notes: Abstract A cold-regulated gene (cor tmc-ap3) coding for a putative chloroplastic amino acid selective channel protein was isolated from cold-treated barley leaves combining the differential display and the 5′-RACE techniques. Cor tmc-ap3 is expressed at low level under normal growing temperature, and its expression is strongly enhanced after cold treatment. A positive correlation between the expression of cor tmc-ap3 and frost tolerance was found both among barley cultivars and among cereal species. The COR TMC-AP3 protein was expressed in vitro, purified and used to raise a polyclonal antibody. Western analysis showed that the cor tmc-ap3 gene product is localized to the chloroplastic outer envelope fraction, supporting its putative function. The frost-resistant winter cultivar Onice accumulated COR TMC-AP3 more rapidly and at a higher level than the frost-susceptible spring cultivar Gitane. After 28 days of cold acclimation the winter cultivar had about 2-fold more protein than the spring genotype. All these results suggest that an increased amount of a chloroplastic amino acid selective channel protein could be required for cold acclimation in cereals. Hypotheses about the role of COR TMC-AP3 during the hardening process are discussed.
