    Notes: The explanatory potential of four forms of expectancy theory with additive and multiplicative expectancy terms and linear and nonlinear valence functions were contrasted. A behavioral decision-making theory approach was used when 101 subjects were asked to make 128 hypothetical job-choice decisions. More than 25,800 decisions under a within-subjects framework were analyzed. Results indicate that the majority (83 percent) of subjects employed additive or multiplicative expectancy models with linear valence functions. However, the predictive efficacy of the expectancy theory model was improved for 17 percent of the subjects when nonlinear valence terms were introduced. The findings imply that different functional forms of expectancy theory may be needed to model individuals' decision-making processes.

    Notes: In Vroom's [45] original formulation of expectancy theory, the relationship between affect and perceived instrumentality was assumed to be linear. Others have suggested that such a relationship may be better modeled by a nonlinear, utility-type function [30]. The current research contrasts the predictive ability of two linear and four nonlinear functions. Using four levels of McClelland's [26] needs for achievement, affiliation, and power as instrumentalities, 101 subjects provided more than 12,900 decisions on the valences of jobs in a behavioral decision-making experiment. Nearly 40 percent of the subjects exhibited nonlinear valence functions. The results emphasize the need to specify the appropriate functional form of the valence component to enhance predictive accuracy and to prevent misspecification problems.

    Notes: Abstract Repeated cutting of vegetation at or near ground level in power-line corridors is a common practice for inhibiting tree growth and regeneration. However, few data exist on long-term community responses. In this study, we sampled 20 northern Kentucky power-line corridors and compared their seedling and sapling communities to the edges and interiors of adjacent undisturbed forests. Mean seedling and sapling density in corridors was roughly twice that of adjacent undisturbed forest interiors, suggesting that repeated cutting is not a viable method of inhibiting tree regeneration. Corridor communities were dominated byRobinia pseudoacacia (black locust) andFraxinus americana (white ash), but ordinations indicated strong similaritties among communities in corridors and adjacent forests. Many of the tree species found in adjacent forests, with the exception of a few shade-tolerant species, had highest seedling and sapling densities in corridors. Stump or root sprouting by many species appears to regenerate forests quickly after cutting. However, disturbed soil and detritus accumulations caused by management crews and their equipment may also create a large variety of microsites for seedling establishment. Because repeated cutting selects for dominance by species with highest sprout growth rates, it should not be used as the sole management technique. It may instead be used to alter the vigor, stature, and stored reserves of trees so that herbicides or other methods of tree control can be used more efficiently.

    Notes: An estimate of the detonation pressure of carbohydrate-metal composite explosives has been obtained experimentally by use of carbon resistor pressure gauges mounted in the wall of the confining tubes. The composite explosives were formulated from a pharmaceutical mixture of 10/90 nitroglyccrin/ß-lactose by weight, and was rendered detonable by inclusion of flaked aluminum and both flaked aluminum and ammonium perchlorate. The detonation pressure of the nitroglyccrin/ß-lactose mixture with 10 percent aluminum by weight was approximatcly 1.1 GPa. The incorporation of 30 percent ball-milled ammonium perchlorate to this formnlation increased the detonation pressure to 12.2 GPa. These pressures must be considered as estimates of the true detonation pressure, because of (a) the suspected non-ideality of the detonation state of these explosives, (b) the statistical nature of the response of the gauges, and (c) possible inconsistencies in the interpreatation of the gauge records. It is recommended that a number of gauges be used in a given experiment, and the results be averaged as one means of cireumventing the above difficulties.

    Notes: The state of the art relative to the measurement of shock and detonation pressures of the magnitude generaled by condensed high explosives is reviewed. Carbon resistors have been shown to provide a relatively inexpensive and direct method for such measurements, provided adequate calibration data are available. The gauge is fabricated by heat-sealing the carbon resistor (470 Ω, 0.125 W) into a suitable plastic material such as polystyrene; when subjected to a strong shock wave, the gauge undergoes compression and the conductivity increases in proprtion to the magnitude of the pressure. The present investigation was concerned with the experimental derivation of calibration equations relating the pressure (in gigapascal) as a function of the conductivity change ΔG (in siemens). The point of inflaction occurring at approximately 2.36 GPa, corresponding to 0.02082 S, is in agreement with previous observations in the literature. Additional experiments are being planned to resolve a problem concerning oscillatory ringing in the gauge voltage records.

    Description: Abstract Unintentional impurities often found in strontium titanate (doped or undoped) have hindered efforts to study individual impurities experimentally. To fill this gap, a computational survey of acceptor‐type point defects of common intentional or unintentional impurities (Al, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, N, Na, Ni, and Zn) is presented. Utilizing defect formation energies from density functional theory using hybrid exchange correlation functionals in a grand canonical model of the defect chemistry, the equilibrium Fermi level (μe) was calculated as a function of processing conditions for pure SrTiO3, SrTiO3 individually doped with each impurity, and SrTiO3 co‐doped with Al and N. Above a certain concentration, each impurity reduced the maximum predicted hole concentration relative to the intrinsic case. Al, Mg, Zn, K, and Na exhibited similar trends and behaved more like ideal acceptors while N, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Cu were all unique and pinned μe near or above the mid‐gap in most conditions. Al/N:SrTiO3 also exhibited similar trends at 800°C for all Al/N ratios, but more variation at 25°C. Additionally, the behavior of Al:SrTiO3 was not recovered until Al/N = 104. This suggests that to achieve SrTiO3 with free holes at room temperature, the concentration of most impurities must be controlled.
