    Topics: Biology
Notes: Summary We have analyzed the sequence of 63 B1 and 71 B2 repetitive elements from published data base sequences. The sequences conform to previously published consensus sequences, but are not identical to them. The B2 sequences show seven regions of high variability between family members, which we show points to the B2 family containing subfamilies; no similar evidence is found for subfamilies of the B1 family. The comparisons show no evidence for the emergence of species-specific variants of B1 or B2 sequences since the separation of murine and hamster lines of descent, nor of their concerted evolution within species in the last 10 million years.

Notes: [Auszug] To the editor: The revelation at the beginning of the year that Woo Suk Hwang faked some of the results of some high-profile and widely reported cloning experiments was predicted to have deleterious effects on the confidence in science across the world. It was also portrayed in some media circles ...

Notes: [Auszug] This encyclopedia of biological molecules is a puzzle. Is it actually meant to be read, or does the editor agree with Sydney Smith that “No furniture is as charming as books, even if you never open them.” For whose education are these words intended? And for whose pocket? The ...

Notes: [Auszug] The shame of Jurassic Park, now about to be released as a blockbuster summer movie, is that it was almost a very good book. Michael Crichton knows the technology well, and most of the vocabulary is there, if at times ludicrously applied. The danger is that, because of the book's technical ...

Notes: [Auszug] The “green” movement has awakened public interest in the quality of our environment. Poisons affect health, and can disrupt industrial processes, especially when they get into water supplies. Technology, and particularly biotechnology, provides many ways of cleaning up damaged ...

Notes: [Auszug] Mergers and acquisitions have been a regular part of the biotech industry for over two decades. A range of opinions has been offered on the motives driving mergers, including management's belief that they can run the acquired company more profitably than the incumbent, the desire to achieve an exit ...

Notes: [Auszug] The latest development in gene chip technology has shifted the ground from the laboratory to the courtrooms. Hyseq (Sun-nyvale, CA), owner of two patents on using oligonucleotides to determine the sequence of a piece of DNA (sequencing by hybri-dization), filed a complaint on March 4 against ...

Notes: [Auszug] Richard Strohmans impassioned appeal1 to look again at genetic determinism and the cult of the gene must have worried investors and scientific directors across our eclectic industry. It may even have concerned a cloner or two. The majority of effort in academic research and biotechnology industrial ...

Notes: [Auszug] The methods for DNA sequence determination that have held sway for the last decade are starting to be challenged by a new approach that may be far better suited to large-scale sequencing projects. Variously dubbed sequencing by hybridization, hybridization sequencing, and fragmentation sequencing ...
