Notes: Collision-induced intersystem crossing rate constants from the (0,4,1) and (1,2,1) levels of the A˜ 1A2 to a˜ 3B1 state and rovibronic relaxation rate constants in the A˜ 1A2 state of SO2 have been studied. The laser wavelength was set at 335.86 and 334.09 nm for the (0,4,1) and (1,2,1) excitation, respectively. When a few rotational levels belonging to the (0,4,1) and (1,2,1) vibrational levels were populated by a narrow bandwidth laser, both the fluorescence from the A˜ 1A2 state and the phosphorescence from the a˜ 3B1 state were observed from the time resolved emission spectra. The decay behavior of the fluorescence signal showed fast and slow components. The radiative lifetimes and apparent quenching rate constants obtained from the fast component analysis are 38±5 and (9.8±0.2)×10−10 for (0,4,1) excitation and 33±5 μs and (1.0±0.1)×10−9 cm3 mol−1 s−1 for (1,2,1) excitation, respectively. The effective lifetimes and quenching rate constants for the slow component are 280±100 and (1.5±0.1)×10−10 for (0,4,1) excitation and they are 220±100 μs and (1.6±0.1)×10−10 cm3 mol−1 s−1 for (1,2,1) excitation. Based on the measured rate constants, kinetic simulations of the emission profiles were done to obtain the magnitudes of intersystem crossing and rovibronic relaxation rate constants. The magnitudes of the rovibronic relaxation and the intersystem crossing rate constants are found to be in the range of 8.5–10.0×10−10 and 1.3–1.5×10−10 cm3 mol−1 s−1, respectively. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Collisional mixing among the z3DJ and z3FJ states of Fe[3d64s(a4D)4p] atoms was investigated in He and Ar by laser-induced fluorescence method. The z3DJ and z3FJ states of Fe atoms were generated directly by photodissociation of Fe(CO)5 followed by single photon absorption within a laser pulse using an unfocussed laser beam with atomic transition frequencies of Fe. When the z3D3 level was excited, the emissions from this level showed a double exponential decay. The fast and slow components of the decay constants from the z3D3 level were 10.7×10−10 and 0.3×10−10 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 in He, and 8.8×10−10 and 1.6×10−10 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 in Ar, respectively. When the z3F4 level was pumped, the emissions from this level showed a single exponential decay and the decay constants were the same as those of the slow components of z3D3. The emissions from higher-lying levels were single exponential at low pressures and the decay constants were in the range of 0.7–3.6×10−10 cm3 molecule−1 s−1. It is found that the collisional mixing between the z3D3 and z3F4 levels is very fast in both buffer gases while the mixing among the higher-lying four levels is relatively slow. The radiative lifetimes of the z3DJ and z3FJ levels were 280–370 and 770–1100 ns, respectively, depending on J. Kinetic simulations of time profiles from the laser excited and collisional product levels revealed that intermultiplet mixing appeared to be more efficient than intramultiplet mixing. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In situ high-Tc superconducting thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−x were deposited on (100) SrTiO3 substrate by laser ablation with a glancing angle geometry at different substrate temperatures in the 560–700 °C range. The transition temperatures, x-ray diffraction patterns, and surface morphologies of the films were substantially different from one another. The critical temperatures of the films deposited at below 600 °C were 72–84 K, while the films deposited at above 650 °C showed Tc0 of 85–91 K. The x-ray diffraction patterns and surface morphologies of the films showed that the orientations of the deposited films depended on the substrate temperature. The films deposited at 700 °C showed an exclusive orientation of "c'' axis perpendicular to the (100) SrTiO3 substrate surface, but those deposited at below 600 °C exhibited random but a preferential orientation of c axis parallel to the (100) SrTiO3 surface. The dependence of the film orientations versus substrate temperature is explained in terms of lattice misfits as well as the surface mobility of the adatoms or molecules at the deposition temperature. Also, the deposition rates were found to be a function of the substrate temperature, and the activation energy of surface migration of adatoms was measured to be 0.21±0.03 eV.

Notes: The vibrational relaxation rate constants of the four low-lying vibrational levels in the 3B1 state of the SO2 molecule have been investigated by a laser induced phosphorescence method in pure SO2. The relaxation rate constants for the 3B1(0,1,0) level have also been studied in Ar, O2, N2, and CO2. The low-lying vibrational levels of the 3B1 state are populated from ground state SO2(X 1A1) by direct pumping, and the phosphorescence emissions from the laser excited as well as the collisional product levels are monitored. The state-to-state relaxation rate constants for the upper two levels are assigned by the kinetic simulations of the phosphorescence time profiles observed from each level. The magnitudes of the relaxation rate constants are in the range of 2.3–3.0×10−11 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 in SO2 and 0.26–1.3×10−11 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 in other gases. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Bacillus thuringiensis subsp tochigiensis HD868 was identified as a bacteriocin producer which exhibited a bactericidal effect against closely related species. This bacteriocin designated as tochicin, was partially purified by 75% ammonium sulfate precipitation followed by subsequent dialysis. This partially purified tochicin showed a narrow antibacterial spectrum of activity against most of 20 typical B. thuringiensis strains and a strain of B. cereus, but not against other bacteria and yeasts tested. The antibacterial activity of tochicin on sensitive indicator cells disappeared completely by proteinase K treatment (1 mg ml−1), which indicates its proteinaceous nature. Tochicin was very stable throughout the range of pH 3.0–9.0 and was relatively heat-stable at 90°C, but bacteriocin activity was not detected after boiling for 30 min. The relationship between cell growth and bacteriocin production was studied in a semi-defined medium. Tochicin activity was detected at the mid-log growth phase, reached the maximum at the early stationary phase, but decreased after the stationary phase. Direct detection of tochicin activity on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel suggested it has an apparent molecular mass of about 10.5 kDa. Tochicin exhibited a bactericidal activity against B. thuringiensis subsp thompsoni HD522 in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0).
