    Description: David Oldroyd served a double term (1996–2004) as Secretary-General of INHIGEO, working with Hugh Torrens (1996–2000) and Manuel Pinto (2000–04) as Presidents. Meeting sites during this time included Beijing (1996), Liège (1997), Neuchâtel (1998), Freiberg (1999), Rio de Janeiro (2000), Lisbon and Aveiro (2001), Paris (2002), Dublin (2003) and Florence (2004). Minor changes in the Terms of Reference and By-Laws aided the mission of INHIGEO. Continuity was a key aspect of Kennard Bork's term (2004–08). President Philippe Taquet (2004–08) and the INHIGEO Board were responsive to resolving operational issues. Annual meetings were held in Italy (2004), the Czech Republic (2005), the Baltic States (2006), Germany (2007) and Norway (2008). In the period since 2008, INHIGEO has continued its success while undergoing constructive changes. The INHIGEO Newsletter has been transformed into the INHIGEO Annual Record , which is publicly available on the internet. The longstanding limit on membership numbers per country has been abandoned, a category of Associate Membership has been introduced and a quarterly INHIGEO Circular was introduced in 2012. An Affiliated Association category was created in 2014. This contribution focuses on the progress of INHIGEO in the years 1996 to the present day. It has been prepared by Kennard B. Bork, INHIGEO Secretary-General (2004–08) and Barry J. Cooper Secretary-General (2008–16). Tragically, David Oldroyd passed away on 7 November 2014 and could not contribute to this paper. In his place, one of us (KBB) discusses David's major contributions.

    Description: In addition to the genetic constitution inherited by an organism, the developmental trajectory and resulting mature phenotype are also determined by mechanisms acting during critical windows in early life that influence and establish stable patterns of gene expression. This is the crux of the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis that suggests undernutrition during gestation and infancy predisposes to ill health in later life. The hypothesis that periconceptional maternal micronutrient supplementation might affect fetal genome-wide methylation within gene promoters was explored in cord blood samples from offspring of Gambian women enrolled into a unique randomized, double blind controlled trial. Significant changes in the epigenome in cord blood DNA samples were further explored in a subset of offspring at 9 months. Gender-specific changes related to periconceptional nutritional supplementation were identified in cord blood DNA samples, some of which showed persistent changes in infant blood DNA samples. Significant effects of periconceptional micronutrient supplementation were also observed in postnatal samples which were not evident in cord blood. In this Gambian population, the increased death rate of individuals born in nutritionally poor seasons has been related to infection and it is of interest that we identified differential methylation at genes associated with defence against infection and immune response. Although the sample size was relatively small, these pilot data suggest that periconceptional nutrition in humans is an important determinant of newborn whole genome methylation patterns but may also influence postnatal developmental patterns of gene promoter methylation linking early with disease risk.

    Description: We have calculated slab fluid temperatures for 51 volcanoes in 10 subduction zones using the newly developed H2O/Ce thermometer. The slab fluid compositions were calculated from arc eruptives, using melt inclusion-based H2O contents, and were corrected for background mantle contributions. The temperatures, adjusted to h, the vertical depth to the slab beneath the volcanic arc, range from ∼730 to 900°C and agree well (within 30°C on average for each arc) with sub-arc slab surface temperatures predicted by recent thermal models. The coherence between slab model and surface observation implies predominantly vertical transport of fluids within the mantle wedge. Slab surface temperatures are well reconciled with the thermal parameter (the product of slab age and vertical descent rate) and h. Arcs with shallow h (∼80 to 100 km) yield a larger range in slab surface temperature (up to ∼200°C between volcanoes) and more variable magma compositions than arcs with greater h (∼120 to 180 km). This diversity is consistent with coupling of the subducting slab and mantle wedge, and subsequent rapid slab heating, at ∼80 km. Slab surface temperatures at or warmer than the H2O-saturated solidus suggest that melting at the slab surface is common beneath volcanic arcs. Our results imply that hydrous melts or solute-rich supercritical fluids, and not H2O-rich aqueous fluids, are thus the agents of mass transport to the mantle wedge.
