Notes: This paper presents a review of empirical studies of self-employment for the Australian, Canadian, Dutch, UK and US labour markets. Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies are analysed. Analyses using cross-sectional data examine the propensity to be self-employed at any one point in time, whereas longitudinal studies focus on the transition into self-employment from wage/salary employment and the survival rate in this state over time. Various hypotheses advanced in the economics and sociology literatures on self-employment are tested. These include the relationship between managerial ability and the propensity to be self-employed and the impact of financial constraints on entry into self-employment stressed in economic models of entrepreneurship, and the relationships between self-employment choice and the nature of the work and group characteristics (e.g., ethnic enclaves) stressed in sociological models of entrepreneurship. The evidence shows that self-employment outcomes are significantly affected by factors such as individual abilities, family background, occupational status, liquidity constraints and ethnic enclaves.

Notes: Magnetostriction measurements were performed on Ho2Fe17 single crystals, using high pulsed magnetic fields up to 15 T and in the temperature range of 5–300 K. Volume deformations in the basal plane have been observed to be one order of magnitude greater than the volume longitudinal deformation along the c axis. The main contribution to the magnetostriction modes arises from the 3d–3d exchange interaction.

Notes: This study was conducted in 20 reservoirs, ranging in size from 4 to 30 ha, in the mountainous, northern region of Vietnam, in ThaiNguyen and YenBai provinces, over two growth cycles in 2002/03 and 2003/04. The reservoirs are leased by farmers for fishery activities from the provincial administration, and the trials were managed by the lessee farmers. Three species combinations in ratios (by fingerling weight) of grass carp: silver carp: bighead carp: common carp: mrigal 1:2:1:1:3 (A), 1:3:1:1:2 (B) and 1:2:1:1:2 (C) were used as seed stock. The overall mean yield of stocked fish in 2002/03 and 2003/04 growth cycles in reservoirs in ThaiNguyen and YenBai provinces was 165 (±21) and 190 (39), and 287 (±22) and 325 (±24) kg ha−1 respectively. The yield in reservoirs in both provinces, in both growth cycles and irrespective of the species combinations, increased in relation to stocking density. In reservoirs in ThaiNguyen Province, the species combination B gave the lowest yield (both growth cycles and overall), and differed significantly (P〈0.05) from combinations A and C. The stocking efficiency (ratio of the yield of stocked fish in kg ha−1 to the weight of the stocked fish in kg ha−1) in reservoirs in ThaiNguyen Province ranged from 2.9 to 5.1 over the two growth cycles and that in YenBai from 2.8 to 3.9. There was no discernible trend between growth cycles and/or between species combinations. The major cost incurred was for fingerling procurement. In all instances, a net profit was accrued. The mean (±standard error (SE)) net profit ha−1 (in 103VN dong; approximately 15 500 VND=1 US$) was 885 (±270) and 864 (±214), and 1322 (±176) and 1600 (±150) for the growth cycles 2002/03 and 2003/04 for reservoirs in ThaiNguyen and YenBai provinces respectively. Between the two growth cycles, the net profit increased in eight and three reservoirs from YenBai and ThaiNguyen, respectively, the maximum increase being recorded in Khuan Gio (165%) and Dong Man (39%) reservoirs.

Notes: Bouteloua gracilis (H.B.K.) Lag. ex Steud.] and little bluestem [Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash.] cultivars limits the use of these two species in the northern Great Plains of Western Canada. This study examined variation in seed yield traits of 11 blue grama and 14 little bluestem plant collections obtained from southern Manitoba, Canada to facilitate development of improved germplasm of these species. Measurements of seed yield traits including harvested air-dried biomass, culm number, seedhead number, seed yield, caryopsis weight, and kernel index were taken from randomized complete block spaced-plant nurseries. Tests were conducted for 2 yr at Winnipeg and 1 yr at Carman, MB, Canada. Collections within both species differed significantly for all traits. Significant collection × year (Winnipeg) and collection × location interactions were present for biomass and seed yield, and many of the seed yield-component traits. While significant, the interactions resulted in few changes in rank among collections. Generally, the most northern collection in both species showed earlier anthesis, produced less biomass, and had lower seed yield than more southern collections. These findings indicate that indigenous plant collections of blue grama and little bluestem show high levels of genetic diversity for biomass, seed yield, and seed yield components, which provide opportunity for development of adapted cultivars with enhanced forage and seed production capability for the region.

Notes: Abstract The utilization time for a parenteral prodrug solution with a bioavailable fraction of unity was defined as the time during which the total of the prodrug concentration and the drug concentration equals or exceeds 90% of the initial prodrug concentration. This utilization time was calculated as a function of pH, buffer, and temperature using the experimentally determined rate expressions for bacampicillin and talampicillin. The results were compared to the shelf life of ampicillin solutions under identical storage conditions. First-order rate constants were determined for conversion of the prodrugs to ampicillin (k c), for β-lactam degradation of the prodrugs (k nc), for the overall loss of prodrugs (k sum), and for β-lactam degradation of ampicillin (k h) in aqueous solutions at 25.0 to 60.0°C, µ = 0.5, in the pH range 0.90 to 8.4. Loss of bacampicillin proceeded primarily by degradation at pH levels below 4 but was due predominantly to conversion at pH levels above 5. Loss of talampicillin was due primarily to conversion throughout the entire pH range. While the prodrug utilization times were approximately twice the shelf life of ampicillin in acidic solutions, ampicillin was significantly better in neutral solutions. The results illustrate the potential for increased prodrug storage periods when utilization time is defined on the basis of the bioactivity rather than on the prodrug concentration alone.

Notes: Abstract The expression for inversion density in a gas laser includes an additional term if one allows elastic and/or resonant collisions among the active atoms. This term is a function of the line parametersγ 1, andγ 2 and describes the effect of homogeneous broadening on the saturated gain profile. Measurements of these parameters show that the homogeneous broadening in a 0.63 μm He-Ne laser plays an important role.

Notes: Abstract Biologically active DNA analogs of tRNAPhe (tDNAPhe) were used to investigate metal ion interaction with tRNA-like structures lacking the 2′OH. Binding of Mg2+ to the 76 oligonucleotide tDNAPhe, monitored by circular dichroism spectroscopy, increased base stacking and thus the conformational stability of the molecule. Mg2+ binding was dependent on a d(m5C) in the anticodon region. In contrast to Mg2+, Cd2+ decreased base stacking interactions, thereby destabilizing the molecule. Since alterations in the anticodon region contributed to most of the spectral changes observed, detailed studies were conducted with anticodon hairpin heptadecamers (tDNAAC Phe). The conformation of tDNAAC Phe-d(m5C) in the presence of 1 mm Cd2+, Co2+, Cr2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, VO2+ or Zn2+ differed significantly from that of the biologically active structure resulting from interaction with Mg2+, Mn2+ or Ca2+. Nanomolar concentrations of the transition metals were sufficient to denature the tDNAAC Phe-d(m5C) structure without catalyzing cleavage of the oligonucleotide. In the absence of Mg2+ and at [Cd2+] to [tDNAAc Phe-d(m5C)] ratios of approximately 0.2–1.0, tDNAAC Phe-d(m5C40) formed a stable conformation with one Cd2+ bound with a K d = 3.7 × 10-7. In contrast to Mg2+, Cd2+ altered the DNA analogs without discriminating between modified and unmodified tDNAAC Phe. This ability of transition metals to disrupt higher order DNA structures, and possibly RNA, at μM concentrations, in vitro, demonstrates that these structures are potential targets in chronic metal exposure, in vivo.

Notes: Abstract Cefuroxime axetil, an ester prodrug of cefuroxime, is comprised of a 50:50 mixture of diastereomers A and B. The first-order hydrolysis kinetics of cefuroxime axetil were investigated as a function of pH, temperature, buffers, and ionic strength. Chromatographically identified hydrolysis products were cefuroxime, Δ2-cefuroxime axetil, and α,β-sulfoxides. Buffer catalysis was observed in acetate and phosphate buffers. No significant kinetic effect was observed for ionic strength in the range µ = 0.1-1.0. The pH–rate profiles for hydrolysis of cefuroxime axetil isomeric mixture were obtained at 45, 35, and 25°C. The equation defining the cefuroxime axetil hydrolysis rate constant as a function of pH was k obs = k H(a H) + k s + k OH(K w/a H), exhibiting maximal stability in the pH range 3.5 to 5.5. The predicted profile at 5°C was in excellent agreement with experimental data in the pH range 3.6 to 5.5. In the pH range 1 to 9, the maximum difference observed for individual hydrolysis constants of isomers was 27%. Shelf-life estimates based on the hydrolysis rate constants for cefuroxime axetil as an isomeric mixture were shown to be equivalent to those based on individual hydrolysis rate constants for isomers A and B.
