    Notes: Mouse and human spermatozoa, but not rabbit spermatozoa, have long been known to be sensitive to loss of motility induced by exogenous H2O2. Recent work has shown that loss of sperm motility in these species correlates with the extent of spontaneous lipid peroxidation. In this study, the effect of H2O2 on this reaction in sperm of the three species was investi gated. The rate of spontaneous lipid peroxidation in mouse and human sperm is markedly enhanced in the presence of 1-5 mM H2O2, while the rate in rabbit sperm is unaffected by H2O2. The enhancement of lipid peroxidation, the rate of reaction of H2O2 with the cells, the activity of sperm glutathione peroxidase, and the endogenous glutathione content are highest in mouse sperm, intermediate in human sperm, and very low in rabbit sperm. Inac tivation of glutathione peroxidase occurs in the presence of H2O2 due to complete conver sion of endogenous glutathione to GSSG: No GSH is available as electron donor substrate to the peroxidase. Inactivation of glutathione peroxidase by the inhibitor mercaptosucci nate has the same effect on rate of lipid peroxidation and loss of motility in mouse and human sperm as does H2O2. This implies that H2O2 by itself at 1-5 mM is not intrinsically toxic to the cells. With merceptosuccinate, the endogenous glutathione is present as GSH in mouse and human sperm, indicating that the redox state of intracellular glutathione by itself plays little role in protecting the cell against spontaneous lipid peroxidation. Mouse and human sperm also have high rates of superoxide production. We conclude that the key intermediate in spontaneous lipid peroxidation is lipid hydroperoxide generated by a chain reaction initiated by and utilizing superoxide. Removal of this hydroperoxide by gluta thione peroxidase protects these sperm against peroxidation; inactivation of the peroxidase allows lipid hydroperoxide to increase and so increases the peroxidation rate. Rabbit sperm have low rates of superoxide reaction due to high activity of their superoxide dismutase; lack of endogenous glutathione and low peroxidase activity does not affect their rate or lipid peroxidation. As a result, these sperm are not affected by either H2O2 or mercapto-succinate. These results lead us to postulate a mechanism for spontaneous lipid peroxida tion in mammalian sperm which involves reaction of lipid hydroperoxide and O2 as the rate-determining step.

    Notes: Intact human sperm incorporated radiolabelled fatty acids into membrane phospholipids when incubated in medium containing bovine serum albumin as a fatty acid carrier. The polyunsturated fatty acids were preferentially incorporated into the plasmalogen fraction of phospholipid. Uptake was linear with time over 2 hr; at this time sufficient label was available to determine the loss of fatty acids under conditions of spontaneous lipid peroxidation. Loss of the various phospholipid types, the loss of the various fatty acids from these phospholipids, and the overall loss of fatty acids were all first order. The loss of saturated fatty acids was slow with first order rate constant k1 = 0.003 hr-1; for the polyunsaturated fatty acids, arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids, k1 = 0.145 and 0.162 hr-1, respectively. The rate of loss of fatty acids from the various phospholipid types was dependent on the type, with loss from phosphatidylethanolamine being the most rapid. Among the phospholipid types, phosphatidylethanolamine was lost at the greatest rate. Analysis of fatty acid loss through oxidation products was determined for radiolabelled arachidonic acid. Under conditions of spontaneous lipid peroxidation at 37°C under air in the absence of albumin, free arachidonic acid was found in the medium, along with minor amounts of hydroxylated derivative. All the hydroperoxy fatty acid remained in the cells. In the presence of albumin, all the hydroperoxy fatty acid was found in the supernatant bound to albumin; none could be detected in the cells. Albumin is known as a very potent inhibitor of lipid peroxidation in sperm; its action may be explained, based on these results, as binding the damaging hydroperoxy fatty acids. These results also indicate that a phospholipase A2 may act in peroxidative defense by excising a hydroperoxy acyl group from phospholipid and providing the hydroperoxy fatty acid product as substrate to glutathione peroxidase. This formulation targets hydroperoxy fatty acid as a key intermediate in peroxidative degradation. © 1995 wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Description: Clinical understandings. An approach from psychodynamics and post-rationalism aims to address different typical themes such as bonding relationships, guilt, identity and narrative through a permanent dialogue between theory and casuistry. The book is composed of two parts: in the first part, psychodynamic theories are the frame of reference for the thematic and clinical approach; on the other hand, in the second part, understanding and discussion are constructed from a post-rationalist perspective. In turn, attachment theory is interwoven between the different chapters as a guideline for clinical understanding. Today, the clinician is in need of constant updating and of including a panoramic view in his or her gaze, since diagnostic accuracy not only requires uncovering what underlies, but also needs to see what clouds the obvious. This text seeks to broaden the understanding and reasoning of the different human manifestations in order to favor the diagnostic and integral process in the psychotherapeutic context, which, in addition, we hope will have an impact on the patient-therapist relationship and thus become study and consultation material for professional psychotherapists and psychotherapists in training.

Un acercamiento desde la psicodinámica y el posracionalismo tiene como objetivo realizar un acercamiento a diferentes típicos como las relaciones vinculares, el sentimiento de culpa, la identidad y la narrativa a través de un diálogo permanente entre la teoría y la casuística. El libro se compone de dos partes: en la primera, las teorías psicodinámicas son el marco de referencia para el abordaje temático y clínico; por su parte, en la segunda, la comprensión y el debate se construyen desde una perspectiva posracionalista. A su vez, la teoría del apego se entreteje entre diferentes capítulos como un orientador de la comprensión clínica. En el presente, el clínico se ve instado a la actualización constante y a incluir en su mirada una visión panorámica, pues la precisión diagnóstica no solo demanda el develamiento de lo que subyace, también precisa ver aquello que nubla por lo flagrante. Este texto busca ampliar la comprensión y razonamiento de diferentes manifestaciones humanas con el fin de favorecer el proceso diagnóstico y comprensivo en el contexto psicoterapéutico, el cual, además, esperamos tenga impacto en la relación paciente terapeuta y se convierta así en material de estudio y consulta para psicoterapeutas profesionales y en formación.

    Description: We address the problem of finding the boundaries of a set of points by using a limited range-cyclic order detector. This sensor, denoted by lrcod, is able to detect nearby objects and enumerate them by their cyclic order; neither distance nor the angular position of each object is provided. Boundaries are important in many applications such as detecting the breakdown of networks, insufficient coverage or connectivity, abnormal functioning sensors, and virtual coordinates for routing. We studied the information space of the lrcod sensors and established their capabilities to find inner and outer boundaries. Our proposed approach uses local information to recognize points on the boundary. To discover the complete boundary we define the Right Hand Without Crossings (RHWoC) rule. We also provide a correctness proof of this rule. The experimental evaluation confirms the effectiveness to find the boundary of large sensor networks.

    Description: The effects of Canna indica (P1), Pontederia sagittata (P2), and Spathiphyllum wallisii (P3) growing in different filter media materials (12 using porous river rock and 12 using tepezyl) on the seasonal removal of pollutants of wastewater using fill-and-drain constructed wetlands (FD-CWs) were investigated during 12 months. Three units of every media were planted with one plant of P1, P2, and P3, and three were kept unplanted. C. indica was the plant with higher growth than the other species, in both filter media. The species with more flower production were: C. indica 〉 P. sagittate 〉 S. wallisii. Reflecting similarly in the biomass of the plants, C. indica and P. sagittata showed more quantity of aerial and below ground biomass productivity than S. wallisii. With respect to the removal efficiency, both porous media were efficient in terms of pollutant removal performance (p 〉 0.05). However, removal efficiency showed a dependence on ornamental plants. The higher removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), nitrates (NO3−-N), ammonium (NH4+-N), and phosphates (PO4−3-P) oscillated between 81% to 83%, 80% to 84%, 61% to 69%, 61% to 68%, 65% to 71%, 62% to 68%, and 66% to 69%, respectively, in P1 and P2, removals 15% to 30% higher than P3. The removal in planted microcosms was significantly higher than the unplanted control units (p = 0.023). Nitrogen and phosphorous compounds were highly removed (60%–80%) because in typical CWs, such pollutant removals are usually smaller, indicating the importance of FD-CWs on wastewater treatments using porous river rock and tepezyl as porous filter media. (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), (NO3−-N), (NH4+-N), (TKN), and (PO4−3-P).
