    Description: The 8th International Comparison of Absolute Gravimeters (ICAG2009) took place at the headquarters of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) from September to October 2009. It was the first ICAG organized as a key comparison in the framework of the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM MRA) (CIPM 1999). ICAG2009 was composed of a Key Comparison (KC) as defined by the CIPM MRA, organized by the Consultative Committee for Mass and Related Quantities (CCM) and designated as CCM.G-K1. Participating gravimeters and their operators came from national metrology institutes (NMIs) or their designated institutes (DIs) as defined by the CIPM MRA. A Pilot Study (PS) was run in parallel in order to include gravimeters and their operators from other institutes which, while not signatories of the CIPM MRA, nevertheless play important roles in international gravimetry measurements. The aim of the CIPM MRA is to have international acceptance of the measurement capabilities of the participating institutes in various fields of metrology. The results of CCM.G-K1 thus constitute an accurate and consistent gravity reference traceable to the SI (International System of Units), which can be used as the global basis for geodetic, geophysical and metrological observations of gravity. The measurements performed afterwards by the KC participants can be referred to the international metrological reference, i.e. they are SI-traceable. The ICAG2009 was complemented by a number of associated measurements: the Relative Gravity Campaign (RGC2009), high-precision levelling and an accurate gravity survey in support of the BIPM watt balance project. The major measurements took place at the BIPM between July and October 2009. Altogether 24 institutes with 22 absolute gravimeters32 and nine relative gravimeters participated in the ICAG/RGC campaign. This paper is focused on the absolute gravity campaign. We review the history of the ICAGs and present the organization, data processing and the final results of the ICAG2009. After almost thirty years of hosting eight successive ICAGs, the CIPM decided to transfer the responsibility for piloting the future ICAGs to NMIs, although maintaining a supervisory role through its Consultative Committee for Mass and Related Quantities.

    Notes: Summary Male and female flowers of the dioecious perennial herb Rubus chamaemorus L. are similar in general appearance. However, female flowers are somewhat smaller, do not produce any pollen, and contain very small amounts of nectar. Syrphids and bumblebees, which are important pollinators of R. chamaemorus, showed a strong preference for male flowers. Male flowers were also less often rejected by flower visitors than were female flowers, and two different groups of syrphid species stayed longer in male than in female flowers. These observations suggest that female flowers of R. chamaemorus attract pollinators by deceit. Hand-pollination experiments indicated that pollen availability limited seed production of R. chamaemorus in female dominated habitats but not in areas with an equal floral sex ratio. We suggest that the relative importance of factors limiting female reproductive success is not constant, but is influenced by the floral sex ratio of the population. This should apply also to other dioecious species that show variable sex ratios on either a local or regional scale.

    Notes: Summary Shoot development and damage by herbivores and pathogens to male, female and non-floral ramets of the dioecious, perennial herb Rubus chamaemorus were studied in the field during three consecutive years. Leaves on male ramets were usually consumed more by herbivores and attacked more by fungi than were leaves on female ramets. Male ramets unfolded their leaves later than did female ramets. In 1983, when the level of herbivory was comparatively high, ramets that were fully developed in early June were more damaged by herbivores than were ramets that unfolded their leaves later. Non-floral ramets usually showed intermediate levels of damage compared to male and female flowering ramets. Defoliation caused a greater increase in ramet mortality among females than among males in a field experiment. It is suggested that the different reproductive roles of males and females differently constrain the evolution of defense against herbivores and pathogens in dioecious plants. This may result in intersexual differences both in palatability to herbivores and susceptibility to pathogens.

    Notes: Summary We examined genetic variation for trichome production in a rapid-cycling population of Brassica rapa by conducting a selection experiment and by growing progeny from maternal seed families. Data from the maternal families were also used to estimate the genetic correlations between trichome number and (1) number of days to first flower and (2) flower production. For seven generations, 10% of the plants were selected from low, high and control lines with 100 individuals per line per generation. The number of trichomes on the right edge of the first leaf was 20.8 ± 13.4 (mean + SD; n=100) in the base population, and had by the final generation reached 93.9 ± 28.7 (n=100) in the high line and 0.9 ±2.6 (n=100) in the low line. Control line plants of the seventh generation did not differ significantly from base population plants in number of trichomes on the edge. The realized heritability of trichome number on the edge was 0.38 (based on the regression of cumulative response on cumulative selection differential). The divergence between lines in trichome production on the edge of the first leaf was associated with a divergence in trichome number on the petiole and on the top of the same leaf, and on the edge, top and petiole of the third leaf. The increase in trichome production in the high line was further associated with a significant delay in flowering time relative to the control and low lines. The estimated heritabilities of trichome number on the edge and the petiole of the first leaf and of days to first flower were not significantly different from 1.0 (based on the among maternal family component of the total variance). Trichome number on the edge showed a significant genetic correlation with trichome number on the petiole of the first leaf (r=0.80), and with number of days to first flower (r=0.31), but not with total flower production (r=0.17; n=83). The substantial genetic variation for trichome production in B. rapa is of potential value for breeding purposes and also makes B. rapa a convenient system for the study of plant-herbivore interactions.
