Description: Tonic immobility (TI) is an innate and reversible response to stress observed in a large number of taxa that includes elasmobranches. Although in aquariums it constitutes a safe tool in animal handling procedures, little is known about its physiological effect. Blood lactate concentration is used as an indicator of the stress derived from elasmobranches catch and handling. The aim of this study was to evaluate the response to stress produced in Myliobatis goodie using TI as a handling tool. Thirteen specimens were subject to constant and interrupted TI during which blood samples were taken at 0, 10, 30, 60, 90 and 120 min interval. It was observed that in TIconst lactate concentration (mmol l-1) remains more stable through time (t0 = 1.23; t10 = 2.33; t30 = 3.23; t60 = 3.55; t90 = 4.48; t120 = 5.3). TIint showed that each procedure generates an increase in levels (t0 = 1.17; t10 = 2.19; t30 = 3.96; t60 = 5.04; t90 = 8.10; t120 = 8.42). Results indicate that TIconst prevents significant increments in blood lactate levels; thus, it can be considered a useful tool to be used in procedures that require to secure and retain organisms for long periods of time.

Notes: To better understand the role the human amyloid precursor protein (hAPP) plays in Alzheimer's disease (AD), it is essential to define its primary function(s). Here we expressed different hAPPs in neurons of transgenic (tg) mice to characterize their effects on the intact central nervous system (CNS). Immunolabeled brain sections of tg and non-tg mice were compared quantitatively by microdensitometry and computer-aided analysis of laser scanning confocal digitized images. Compared with non-tg mice, tg mice overexpressing hAPPs showed an increase in the number of synaptophysin immunoreactive presynaptic terminals as well as in the expression of the growth-associated marker GAP-43. While non-tg controls and tg mice expressing hAPP751 at moderate levels displayed a normal pattern of reinnervation of the dentate gyrus following perforant pathway transection, tg mice expressing hAPP695 at severalfold higher levels showed an accentuation of the synaptic loss and no sprouting reaction. In addition, expression of hAPP751 at moderate levels effectively protected neurons against excitotoxic injury induced either acutely by systemic injection of kainic acid or chronically by transgene-driven glial production of the soluble HIV-1 protein gp120. Neuronal expression of hAPP695 at higher levels provided less excitoprotection. Our findings are consistent with the postulate that APP plays a role in the formation/maintenance of synapses and that processes which affect this function could contribute to the synaptic pathology seen in AD. Our study also revealed that hAPPs can exert important excitoprotective functions in vivo and that the efficiency of this protection may depend on the hAPP isoform expressed as well as on the level of neuronal hAPP expression. Neuronal overexpression of hAPP beyond a certain level may have detrimental effects on the CNS, particularly in the context of secondary neural injuries.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that narrow-band radio bursts of right- and left-hand circular polarizations from the Sun and flare stars can be produced via nonlinear conversion of Langmuir waves into high-frequency electromagnetic electron cyclotron waves near the plasma frequency by coupling to low-frequency electromagnetic cyclotron waves such as Alfvén-ion cyclotron or magnetosonic-whistler waves.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Thermodynamische Prozesse in kompressiblen Strömungsfeldern mit Dissipation werden untersucht.
Notes: Abstract Dissipative thermodynamic processes in compressible flow fields are investigated on the basis of quasistatic energy balances as prescribed by the equation of motion and the Second Law of thermodynamics. It is shown that the entropy change due to dissipation can be expressed in terms of a simple thermodynamic process equation. The resultant flow field consists of frictional disturbances whose convection velocity is not uniform. As a consequence, there is a possibility of large local entropy gradients to occur in the dissipative flow field.

Notes: Abstract After the serious accident with a chemical industrial plant at Seveso (Italy) in 1976, the Commission of the European Communities has made a directive on major accidents, usually called the Post-Seveso Guideline. In its annex III, a list of 178 substances is given for which potentially dangerous volumes in case of an accident are defined on the basis of human health criteria. For the implementation of environmental criteria, information on toxicity to aquatic organisms, dilution, and physical behavior in water is needed. A literature search for relevant data on these 178 substances revealed aquatic toxicity data for 116 substances, but only for 87 substances sufficient data were available to make a hazard assessment. As an example, the River Rhine was used to calculate the critical quantities that, after a sudden discharge in the Swiss part, could cause damage at the Dutch part some 800 km downstream. In the absence of a common opinion on the criteria for being a major accident and a serious environmental hazard, the impact of different criteria quantities is discussed. If, for example, in the whole River Rhine a mortality of 5% of the aquatic species is chosen as the criterion for damage to the ecosystem, the critical quantities as mentioned in the EEC directive have to be lowered drastically for the majority of the substances. For 18 substances it could be shown that release of the mentioned quantities would be catastrophic for aquatic life in the whole river.
