    Description: The Humaljärvi lake is situated 25 km West of Helsinki (formely, Helingsfors). The author proceeded to dredge the bottom of the lake in order to study its plancton species following a preceeding study of Pr. J. E. Rosberg in 1900. From the middle of the lake, at a maximum depth of about 10 meters the dredge brought easily some fairly soft gray mud. When the mud samples were sifted, it remained sand grains and ferro-manganese deposits in the form of abundant small round or lenticular objects, 2-6 mm in diameter.

    Notes: Abstract The seismic coda is usually thought to be composed of waves scattered from the heterogeneities in the earth. Three classes of scattering mechanisms have been recognized: repeated specular reflection of primary waves in a uniformly layered structure, volume scattering of primary waves from localized volume heterogeneities, and scattering of primary waves from irregularities in an otherwise generally layered structure. The presence of the earth's surface complicates the description of all these scattering phenomena whenever the scattering obstacles are near or at the surface. In this paper I review work which demonstrates the effects of scattering near the earth's surface, emphasizing three general areas of investigation: scattering of body waves from an irregular free surface, scattering of body waves in irregular layers, and propagation of surface waves across irregular topography or in irregular wave guides. Most of the effects of importance have been recognized in model studies of idealized geometries. Observational evidence in support of the model studies exists, but is often inferred. Few controlled experiments to measure scattering have been performed. Topography can focus or defocus incident body waves and can convert body waves to surface waves and vice versa. Irregular surface layers can amplify incident body waves, couple body and surface waves, and produce resonances in spatially limited low velocity valley structures and highly irregular layers. Love wave propagation is highly sensitive to irregularities in a wave guide. Love wave dispersion measured over irregularly layered media can be quite different from the dispersion of the mean plane layered structure beneath the receiver array. Rayleigh wave dispersion is far less sensitive to smooth irregularities in a wave guide and is usually representative of the mean structure beneath the receiving array.

    Notes: Summary Three healthy subjects took methaqualone (1.0 mg/kg) once daily for 16 days. Equilibrium concentrations in plasma were established after multiple oral doses and there was a linear post-steady state decline in the log plasma concentration of methaqualone. The drug was also given as single oral doses and plasma concentrations were followed for 5 days (t1/2=36 to 38 h.). Sedative effects were studied by psychophysiological tests and subjective ratings both in the single and multiple dose experiments. A significant impairment of flicker fusion discrimination ability occurred during the increase in the plasma concentration of the drug; maximum effects preceded peak plasma concentrations and the impairment disappeared whilst plasma concentrations were still high. The same effects were found in the subjective ratings. The drug was shown to have a possible tremorogenic effect after a hypnotic dose. One subject experienced sedation during the multiple dose experiment, despite the use of a low dose, an observation that should be taken into account, e.g. in car driving.

    Notes: Summary The peripheral histamine-inhibiting and central sedative effects of single oral doses (SOD) and of repeated administration for one week (steady state, SS), of 20 mg hydroxyzine HCL and 10 mg cetirizine have been assessed in 12 healthy volunteers, in a double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over study. Peripheral H1-receptor antagonism was estimated as the reduction in the area of the flare and the duration of the itch after intradermal injection of histamine 0.1 and 1.0 μg. CNS effects were assessed by a battery of computerized neuropsychological tests and seven visual analogue scales. Drug compliance was ascertained by plasma level determinations. Cetirizine 10 mg (SOD) produced a more pronounced peripheral effect than 20 mg hydroxyzine, whereas hydroxyzine but not cetirizine, showed a significant sedative action in the relevant rating scales. These effects vanished during steady state, suggesting adaptation to the initial sedative effect of hydroxyzine in most of the subjects. No sedative effect of cetirizine was demonstrated. There was no impairment at group level in the neuropsychological tests after the SOD or SS treatment. However, six subjects who showed sedation in the analogue ratings after hydroxyzine, displayed significantly impaired performance after hydroxyzine SOD. The findings are discussed in relation to the individual characteristics of the study groups.
