Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Individual males, females and pairs of primary reproductives ofH. mossambicus developed strong aggressive reactions to each other after being isolated for approximately 24 hours. The intensity of the reactions was a function of the isolation period. Temperature had no significant influence on the reaction while digging in the soil intensified the reaction. 2. Laboratory colonies ofH. mossambicus were only slightly aggressive but field workers from different colonies were strongly aggressive. Use was made of the aggressive behaviour of field workers to determine the area of the foraging territory of a colony. The mean area of 12 colonies was found to be about 1 000 ft2. 3. When four laboratory colonies ofH. mossambicus were allowed to coalesce, the resulting colony retained only one pair of reproductives and destroyed the others. 4. T. trinervoides colonies collected in the field fought to the death in the laboratory. Workers attacked workers in the absence of soldiers and vice versa. 5. H. mossambicus workers and soldiers were not attacked byT. trinervoides soldiers although the two species fought and many individuals were killed when they were forcibly mixed.

Notes: Summary Fertilized eggs ofHodotermes mossambicus took up water progressively during the last 15–16 days of the 24–25 day incubation period. Both the large eggs from founding pairs and the small eggs from mature colonies approximately doubled in weight. Infertile eggs, 50% of which survived for 14 days, showed a lower rate of water uptake. The eggs could take up water when they were in contact with the liquid. Under subsaturated conditions, the reproductives provided the liquid while tending the eggs, but in contact with free water the eggs could still maintain their water balance in the absence of the reproductives. However, tending was essential for the eggs to survive, even in the presence of free water.

Notes: Abstract The components of trail-laying and trailfollowing behaviour in the harvester termitesHodotermes mossambicus (Hagen) andTrinervitermes trinervoides (Sjöstedt) were investigated. In both species the trails are laid by pressing the third to sixth abdominal segments against the substratum. The trails are detected by olfactory receptors which are found on the antennae—principally on the distal one third.H. mossambicus trails andT. trinervoides trails laid on paper persisted for approximately 90 and 20 minutes respectively at 23° C±1° C. T. trinvervoides trail substances were steam volatile, but steam distillates ofH. mossambicus individuals were inactive. Ethanol or diethyl ether extracts ofH. mossambicus were, however, active. The volatile components of the secretions of the nasuteT. trinervoides soldiers were collected by drawing an air shtream over fighting colonies and passing it through gas scrubbing bottles containing appropriate solvents.

Notes: Abstract The control of caste formation in the harvester termiteHodotermes mossambicus (Hagen) was investigated. Normal laboratory colonies contained a primary reproductive pair, between 6.59 and 24.98% workers, 0.39 and 3.45% soldiers and 74.64 and 92.06% larvae. Supplementary reproductives did not develop in colonies deprived of their king and queen. Continuous removal of soldiers stimulated soldier production. We have suggested that a pheromone produced by the soldiers plays a major role in controlling the soldier population of a colony. A similar phermone system appreared to control the production of workers. Evidence was also obtained that the primary reproductive pair influenced the production of workers and soldiers.

Notes: [Auszug] The harvester termite (Hodotermes mossambicus) is widespread in the semi-arid regions of South Africa. About 15 per cent3 of the individuals in a colony are darkly pigmented with black heads (adults) while the bulk of the colony are unpigmented and have a translucent appearance (larvae). All the ...

Notes: Grimm glow discharge spectrometry was used to analyse electroless nickel coatings on a steel substrate. Because of poor depth resolution at the coating/metal interface, it was necessary to determine the sputtering rate of the layer itself at different power settings and to calculate the sputtering rate per power unit. The penetration time for layers with different thicknesses was also determined for different power settings. By comparing sputtering rates per power unit, it was found that the best results were obtained if the penetration time was equated to the time needed for the nickel signal to reduce to half its original value.

Three males of Catapterix crimaea Zagulajev & Sinev, 1988, were discovered in southern France. This little known species, belonging to the family Acanthopteroctetidae (new family for France), superfamily Neopseustoidea (new superfamily for France) was previously only recorded from the Crimea. Catapterix crimaea is the only known Palearctic species of the Acanthopteroctetidae. The small moths (5,5-6,5 mm wingspan) with their golden scales, head with erect hairscales, short tongue, long mandibular palps resemble some Nepticulidae, Heliozelidae or icropterigidae. Other characters include a single spur on the mid tibia (as in Eriocraniidae), and a single frenular bristle. The female and biology are unknown.
