Notizen: Abstract The longitudinal waves (Bernstein modes and plasma waves near the hybrid frequency) in a mixture of equilibrium coronal plasma and a small group of energetic electrons are investigated. The energetic electrons have a nonequilibrium momentum distribution inherent in trapped particles. The frequency dependence of the cyclotron instability increments is studied. Attention is paid to a significant role of the relativistic effects for the cyclotron instability of longitudinal waves. For sufficiently large velocity of nonequilibrium electrons the increments are shown to increase when the hybrid frequency coincides with one of the gyrofrequency harmonics (double plasma resonance). The results obtained are used in Parts II and III to explain ‘tadpoles’ and ‘zebra’-pattern in solar radio bursts.

Notizen: Abstract The results of investigation of the cyclotron wave instability in the corona for Bernstein modes and plasma waves in a hybrid band have been used to interpret zebra-pattern phenomena. Two models of the generation region of parallel drifting bands are considered: the model of the point source localized at the apex of the magnetic trap and the model of a distributed source extended along the magnetic flux tube. In the first model it is assumed that a harmonic character of zebrapattern appears either in coalescence of excited Bernstein modes at different harmonics of the gyrofrequency or in coalescence of these modes with plasma waves excited in the hybrid band. In the latter case if the magnetic field changes in time a pulsating generation regime occurs. In the second model, the emission bands appear in the regions of double plasma resonance as a result of coalescence of longitudinal waves excited in the hybrid band. Estimations of the magnetic field and the nonequilibrium component density necessary for the zebra-pattern to generate are presented.

Notizen: Abstract Possible mechanisms of the third harmonic generation in solar radio bursts are investigated. It is shown that the most essential is the coupling of plasma waves in a source with electromagnetic radiation at the second harmonic. This phenomenon may be responsible for the occurrence of the third harmonic in the type V event on 25 October 1972 recorded by Benz, as well as in the U-burst on 3 September 1957 reported by Haddock and Takakura.

Notizen: Abstract An interpretation is suggested of the fine structure of tadpole solar radio emission based upon the theory of Bernstein mode cyclotron instability. It is shown that the frequency spectrum of an individual tadpole is similar to the frequency behaviour of the Bernstein mode increment if the velocity of electrons trapped by the magnetic field amounts nearly to 109 cm s-1. The absorption ‘body’ and emission ‘tail’ are associated with the instability due to the kinematic Doppler effect and the ‘eye’ with the instability due to the velocity dependence of the electron mass. The observed radio emission is the result of nonlinear conversion (coalescence) of Bernstein modes at different frequencies into electromagnetic waves. The appearance of separate tadpoles (interrupted character of emission in time) is attributed to the pulse injection of nonequilibrium electrons into the trap. Estimations are presented for the expected dimensions of emission region and the hot electron density necessary for Bernstein mode excitation.

Notizen: Abstract Observations of the active region AR 7962 obtained at 2–32 cm on the RATAN-600 radio telescope on May 10–12, 1996, are presented. The high-resolution measurements detected a narrow feature near 8.5 cm against the background of the smooth spectrum of the local source associated with sunspots. This narrow-band emission is identified with a bright, pointlike, high-frequency source at 1.7 cm recorded on maps made using the Nobeyama radio telescope. The characteristics of the observed line (lifetime 3 days, brightness temperature of the order of several million Kelvin, relative width of about 10%) suggest that it can be explained as thermal cyclotron radiation at the third harmonic of the electron gyrofrequency from a compact source containing a dense, hot plasma; the corresponding higher frequency emission could be due to thermal Bremsstrahlung. Analysis of the RATAN-600 and Nobeyama data can be used to probe the magnetic field, kinetic temperature, and electron density in the radiation source in the corona.

Notizen: Abstract Some ways of identifying magnetic fields in the solar corona using the observed properties of solar radio emissions are discussed. Examples are given for measuring the magnetic field in the active region atmosphere (in the chromosphere-corona transition region) based on spectral observations of microwave radiation from local sources associated with sunspots. Ways of determining the magnetic field in hot coronal loops in the case of recording cyclotron lines in solar microwave radiation are considered. It is shown that polarization of the second harmonic in Type III bursts testifies to a magnetic field on the track of electrons accelerated in the flare region and moving outward.

Notizen: Abstract The results of VLA observations of an unusual source of microwave radiation, associated with the sunspot NOAA 7789 on October, 15, 1994, are presented. The fine structure of the source, which is a ring structure in intensity and polarization at frequencies 4.5 and 8.0 GHz, is discussed. It is shown that the features observed can be explained by a thermal cyclotron mechanism if the magnetic field is approximated by a vertical dipole buried under the photosphere, but the spatial distributions of kinetic temperature and electron density in the atmosphere above the sunspot differ considerably from the standard model. A two-dimensional source model (the dependences of the parameters on the height and distance from the center of the sunspot), which fits the observations at the above frequencies, is evolved. The principal physical result is that the data observed are explainable by the presence of an unexpectedly dense cool plasma in the atmosphere over the center of the umbra.

Notizen: Abstract It was shown by Zheleznyakov and Zlotnik (1980a, b) that in complex configurations of solar magnetic fields (in hot loops above the active centres, in neutral current sheets in the preflare phase, in hot X-ray kernels in the initial flare phase) a system of cyclotron lines in the spectrum of microwave radiation is likely to be formed. Such a line was obtained by Willson (1985) in the VLA observations at harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency. This communication interprets these observations on the basis of an active region model in which thermal cyclotron radiation is produced by hot plasma filling the magnetic tube in the corona above a group of spots. In this model the frequency of the recorded 1658 MHz line corresponds to the third harmonic of electron gyrofrequency, which yields the magnetic field (196 ± 4) G along the magnetic tube axis. The linewidth Δf/f ∼ 0.1 is determined by the 10% inhomogeneity of the magnetic field over the cross-section of the tube; the line profile indicates the kinetic temperature distribution of electrons over the tube cross-section with the maximum value 4 × 106 K. Analysis shows that study of cyclotron lines can serve as an efficient tool for diagnostics of magnetic fields and plasma in the solar active regions and flares.

Notizen: Abstract We consider the important part played by plasma wave absorption at the higher harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency (under conditions of the so-called double plasma resonance) in the solar corona. An explanation is proposed for the fine structure of Type III bursts on the basis of this effect.
