Notes: Micromagnetic simulations have been performed to compare the recording performance of oriented media (Mr=1.50) with planar isotropic media in longitudinal recording. With no exchange, oriented medium exhibits substantially less dc noise power thus larger signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). But with increasing linear density, the oriented medium shows larger nonlinear amplitude reduction, larger nonlinear transition shift, and less SNR advantage. At finite exchange, there is no substantial SNR difference between oriented and isotropic medium. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Scaling relations of hysteresis loops and single transitions with respect to grain size were obtained by numerical simulation of closely packed 64×64 uniform hexagonal grains. The smallest obtainable transition parameter was found to be half the grain size (D). An approximate formula to relate the simulation data with the Williams-Comstock model was found to be a/D(approximate)0.52+0.35(aWC/D)2 valid only for t/D≤2.0, d+t/2≤3.5D and Ms/Hk≤0.1. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Several approaches for slender vortex motion (the local induction equation, the Klein–Majda equation, and the Klein–Knio equation) are compared on a specific example of sideband instability of Kelvin waves on a vortex. Numerical experiments on this model problem indicate that all these equations yield qualitatively similar behavior, and this behavior is different from the behavior of a nonslender vortex with variable cross-section. It is found that the boundaries between stable, recurrent, and chaotic regimes in the parameter space of the model problem depend on the equation used. The boundaries of these domains in the parameter space for the Klein–Majda equation and for the Klein–Knio equation are closely related to the core size. When the core size is large enough, the Klein–Majda equation always exhibits stable solutions for our model problem. Various conclusions are drawn; in particular, the behavior of turbulent vortices cannot be captured by these approximations, and probably cannot be captured by any slender vortex model with constant vortex cross-section. Speculations about the differences between classical and superfluid hydrodynamics are also offered. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Peach fruit (Prunus persica cv. Hermosa) were allowed to ripen immediately after harvest or after 30 days of 0°C storage. The fruits lost 75–80% of their firmness after 5 days at 20°C. During ripening after harvest there was a loss of both uronic acid and methyl groups from the cell wall. Cell wall labelling with JIM 7, a monoclonal antibody which recognized pectins with a high degree of methylation, was lower in ripe fruits than in freshly harvested fruits. However, ripe fruit cell walls did not cross-react with JIM 5, which recognizes pectins with low methylation. During storage, de-methylation occurred and in fruit ripened after storage there was little further change in pectin methylation or pectin content in the cell walls. The labelling of stored or stored plus ripened cell walls with JIM 7 was similar, but the cell walls of fruit ripened after storage showed some low cross-reactivity with JIM 5. The in vitro activity and mRNA abundance of pectin esterase (EC 3.1.1.11) was not correlated with the amount of de-esterification as measured chemically or by immuno-labelling in the cell walls. Eighty percent of the fruits which ripened after storage developed a woolly texture. It is suggested that woolliness is due to de-esterification of pectins, not accompanied by depolymerization, which leads to the formation of a gel-like structure in the cell wall.

Notes: [Auszug] Chemokines are small secreted proteins that stimulate the directional migration of leukocytes and mediate inflammation. During screening of a murine choroid plexus complementary DNA library, we identified a new chemokine, designated neurotactin. Unlike other chemokines, neurotactin has a unique ...

Notes: Abstract This paper is focused on diapause and polyphenism of development of Lagria hirta L. and tries to unravel its mechanism of life-history adaptation. Lagria hirta, distributed widely in Europe, has a strictly univoltine life cycle. The results showed that larval diapause and moulting polymorphism were the deciding factors that made L. hirta maintain its univoltinism and keep a flexible relation between seasonal changes and life-history phases. In the laboratory, larvae of this species were not able to pupate if kept at constant temperatures of 5 °, 10 °, 15 °, 20 °, 25 ° or 30 °C combined with a photoperiod of either LD (L16:D8) or SD (L8:L16). Pupation only occurred if larvae were reared at 15 °–25 °C when intervened by a three-month chilling at 5 °C in stages L3, L4, L5 or L6. A chilling treatment was shown to be obligatory for the termination of its larval diapause and had an accelerating and synchronizing effect on larval development. Larval diapause of L. hirta was characterized by no pupation and more moulting in advanced instars, longer duration of each single stage, and moulting desynchronization. Larval development was found to be variable with respect to the total number of instars: most larvae underwent a total of seven or eight moults; some larvae might even moult once or twice more, but they seldom pupated. It seemed that the choice for the 7-instar or the 8-instar development did not directly relate to any of the external conditions, such as temperature, photoperiod, and stages with chilling treatment. This polyphenism was observed in the same group under identical conditions and even in a single egg clutch. In L. hirta, overwintering in different stages of L3–L6, and choosing the 7- or 8-instar pathway of development are two features that increase the plasticity and flexibility in coordinating its life cycle with seasonal change, that varies unpredictably from year to year.

Notes: Nanostructured coatings are experiencing a rapid development in recent years due to theirpotential applications in a wide variety of technological areas. In order to improve the properties ofthermal barrier coatings, nanostructured 8 wt% yttria partial stabilized zirconia coatings were depositedby air plasma spraying with reconstituted nanoparticles on titanium alloy substrates. For comparison, theconventional counterparts were also fabricated. Their microstructures were investigated by usingtransmission electron micrograph and scanning electron micrograph. Their mechanical behaviors wereevaluated via Vickers microhardness test and tensile test. The results indicate that the nanostructuredzirconia coatings with original nanostructure and columnar grains have higher microhardness and adhesivestrength than the conventional counterparts. Both the nanostructured coating and the conventionalcoating exhibit a bimodal distribution of microhardness values, which are analyzed via Weibull statistics. This phenomenon is attributed to the presence of molten and non-molten parts in the coatings

Notes: Titanium oxide films were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering using continuous or pulsed DC sputtering power. The results of the structure and vitro hemocompatibility analyses indicated that non-stoichiometric titanium oxide films possess better hemocompatibility than LTIC and that the hemocompatibility of the titanium oxide films are evidently improved with the increase of rutile phase. This can result from the lower interface tension between titanium oxide films and biological substances and lower ratio of dispersive and polar component of the surface energy

Notes: Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) haveattracted much attention recently for the evaluation of blood compatibility of biomaterials due totheir convenience and quantifiability. In this paper, the use of LDH and ELISA is described for insitu investigation of platelet behavior on biomaterial surfaces, including quantification of plateletadhesion and platelet activation, after suitable testing conditions have been established. Thematerial samples investigated in these tests included low temperature isotropic carbon (LTIC), Ti-Ofilms, and phosphorus- and aluminum-doped TiO2 films. The evaluation results show that thelowest platelet adhesion and activation are observed on phosphorus-doped TiO2 films while thehighest platelet adhesion and activation are observed on LTIC. In addition, conventional plateletadhesion experiments were performed for comparison, and yielding similar evaluation results asLDH and ELISA. It is suggested that LDH and ELISA tests can be successfully applied to evaluatethe blood compatibility of biomaterials and can show many advantages, such as quantification, reliability and objectivity, compared with conventional platelet adhesion test
