The extractive distillation process for the separation of ethyl formate -ethanol-water mixture was investigated in this paper whilst ethylene glycol was used as the extractive solvent. High purity products could be gathered in the top of column, and ethylene glycol could be completely recycled in the bottom of recovery column. Concretely, two kinds of control strategy were designed and tested in the extractive distillation system to handle large disturbances in feed flow rate and feed composition. Finally, by comparing the results, it indicates that the control strategy based on proper variable pairing that was given according to the effective relative gain array could be more efficiently to minimize the dynamic disturbances.
