Notizen: A simple fabrication method is described to produce reliable and robust (self-repairing) field emission sources from randomly aligned carbon nanotubes. The sources display stable and reproducible current–voltage characteristics with sharp turn on near 100 V and emission currents up to 400 mA/cm2 at 200 V. Two successful methods are described for patterning the emission source area into emitting and nonemitting regions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We demonstrate that multiwalled BxCyNz nanotubes can be efficiently converted to BN multiwalled nanotubes via an oxidation treatment. The microstructure and composition of the precursors and final products have been characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The conversion process is monitored by thermogravimetric analysis. Carbon layers of BxCyNz nanotubes start to oxidize at 550 °C, thereby transforming BxCyNz nanotubes into pure BN nanotubes. The remarkable thermal stability of pure BN nanotubes in an oxidizing environment is also established. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have used high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to resolve the [0001] projected basal plane structure and chirality relationships in boron nitride nanotubes. Evidence for tube growth along both 〈101¯0〉 and 〈112¯0〉 is found. Our results suggest that the 〈112¯0〉 (armchair) tubes form first. Subsequent growth can take the form of a 〈101¯0〉 (zig-zag) tube or additional armchair tubes. In both cases, the additional walls can be accommodated without the need for defect formation for circumferential tube closure. These results suggest that real boron nitride tubes may, in practice, realize their inherently high modulus and display less variation of mechanical properties than tubes comprised of carbon. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The electrical noise characteristics of single-walled carbon nanotubes have been investigated. For all three cases of individual isolated nanotubes, thin films of interconnected nanotubes, and bulk nanotube mats, anomalously large bias-dependent 1/f noise is found. The noise magnitude greatly exceeds that commonly observed in metal films, carbon resistors, or even carbon fibers with comparable resistances. A single empirical expression describes the noise for all nanotube samples, suggesting a common noise-generating mechanism proportional only to the number of nanotubes in the conductor. We consider likely sources of the fluctuations, and consequences for electronic applications of nanotubes if the excessive noise cannot be suppressed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: [Auszug] To realize the full potential of multiwall carbon nanotubes in applications such as biological and scanned probes, it is desirable to develop techniques for controlling their shape and geometry. Here we describe a method by which the outer layers of a multiwall nanotube can be successively ...

Notizen: [Auszug] Carbon nanotube samples were prepared by a carbon-arc discharge method9. Our synthesis chamber employed a water-cooled 0.625-inch graphite anode, a water-cooled copper cathode, 650 Torr of environmental helium pressure, a 120 A d.c. electrode current, and an electrode gap of a few millimetres. Notizen: [Auszug] Under appropriate non-equilibrium growth conditions, carbon atoms form relatively stable hollow clusters of well-defined mass number, collectively known as fullerenes. The mass production, purification and condensation of such clusters into a molecular solid is generally essential to full ...
