    Description: In the Gangdese belt of southern Tibet, Paleocene-Eocene magmas record the final stage of Neo-Tethyan subduction and are associated with few economic porphyry deposits. In contrast, magmas formed during later stages of the India-Asia collision in the Oligo-Miocene are associated with several large porphyry Cu-Mo ± Au deposits, especially in the eastern part of the belt (~89°E–93°E). In a previous study, we showed that these Oligocene-Miocene magmas were more hydrous than the earlier Paleocene-Eocene magmas. In this study, we show that the later magmas were also more oxidized. Paleocene-Eocene rocks from the eastern Gangdese belt are characterized by low zircon Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ ratios (mostly 〈50; 6.0–66.8; average = 25.7 ± 18.4, n = 26) and low to moderate FMQ values (–1.2 to +0.8, average = –0.2 ± 0.8, n = 5; estimated from ilmenite-magnetite mineral pairs). In comparison, Miocene igneous rocks from the eastern Gangdese belt show higher zircon Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ ratios (mostly 〉50; 32.3–141.9, average = 74.3 ± 30.1, n = 33) and higher f O 2 values (FMQ 0.8–2.9, average = 1.8 ± 0.8, n = 6; estimated from magnetite-ilmenite pairs). Estimates of magmatic oxidation state from amphibole compositions also show an increase from FMQ 1.2 to 2.1 (average = 1.6 ± 0.2, n = 40) in the Paleocene-Eocene to 2.0 to 2.8 (average = 2.5 ± 0.2, n = 58) in the Miocene. Sparse whole-rock Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ ratios show the same general trend. The amphibole results are systematically shifted to higher FMQ compared to data from magnetite-ilmenite pairs, but their trend is internally consistent. The higher oxidation states (and water contents) of Miocene igneous rocks from the eastern Gangdese belt may explain their unique association with large porphyry deposits in Tibet, because it has been shown from other studies that the potential for hydrous calc-alkaline magmas to transport Au is maximized near FMQ 1.0, and Cu at higher f O 2 (FMQ 〉 1.0). In comparison, the somewhat less oxidized and less hydrous Paleocene- Eocene magmas would have been less fertile for the formation of such deposits. We suggest that these differences reflect the tectonomagmatic evolution of the Cenozoic Gangdese collisional orogen, from early collision-related magmatism in the Paleocene-Eocene to late collisional magmatism in the Miocene. Asthenospheric upwelling following slab breakoff in the Miocene caused interaction between mantle-derived magmas and previously subduction modified Tibetan lithosphere. The resultant evolved magmas had high oxidation states and water contents, which are favorable properties for the subsequent formation of magmatic-hydrothermal porphyry Cu-Mo ± Au deposits.

    Description: The Sanjiang metallogenic belt includes a variety of economically important carbonate-hosted Pb-Zn deposits that share some similarities with classic Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) ore deposits but are hosted within a thrust belt rather than an orogenic foreland. This study aims to clarify the origin of mineralizing fluids responsible for this style of mineralization. Fluid inclusions trapped in ore-stage carbonate and fluorite from these deposits have salinities of ~6 to 28 wt % NaCl equiv and homogenization temperatures of 70° to 370°C that extend to much higher values than are typical of MVT deposits. The majority of ore-stage samples have fluid inclusion molar Br/Cl ratios of between seawater (1.5 x 10 –3 ) and (2.86 ± 0.04) x 10 –3 , but low-salinity fluid inclusions in late calcite have lower Br/Cl of less than (0.55 ± 0.01) x 10 –3 . In contrast, fluid inclusion molar I/Cl ratios are uniformly greater than the seawater value of ~0.8 x 10 –6 and extend from (2.1 ± 1.1) x 10 –6 to (506 ± 12) x 10 –6 . This range of Br/Cl and I/Cl values is similar to what has been reported for fluid inclusions in other MVT districts and together with the fluid salinity implies the ore-forming fluids had a dominant origin from basinal brines (e.g., sedimentary formation waters) formed by the subaerial evaporation of seawater; all the fluids were influenced by addition of organic Br and I derived from the sedimentary host rocks and some fluids were locally modified by interaction with evaporites producing low Br/Cl ratios. The fluid inclusions have 40 Ar/ 36 Ar ratios of up to 441 that are higher than the atmospheric value of 296 and typical of carbonate sedimentary rocks. The fluid inclusions have high concentrations of atmospheric 36 Ar and variable 129 Xe/ 36 Ar and 84 Kr/ 36 Ar ratios that are outside the range expected from mixing air and air-saturated water. These data are likely to reflect a complex fluid history involving acquisition of atmospheric ( 36 Ar, 84 Kr, 129 Xe) and radiogenic (e.g., 40 Ar ) noble gases trapped in sedimentary rocks and fractionation of these gases between water and hydrocarbons. The 3 He/ 4 He ratios of fluorite fluid inclusions range from a typical crustal value of 0.061 ± 0.004 to values of 〉0.7 Ra, indicating a minor component of mantle-derived 3 He. The fluids with the highest 3 He/ 4 He also have 4 He/ 40 Ar close to the mantle value, suggesting the 3 He could have been introduced by a volumetrically minor fluid of either magmatic or deep metamorphic origin ( 40 Ar = radiogenic 40 Ar). The new halogen and noble gas data are consistent with a model in which regional Pb-Zn mineralization formed by mixing two modified basinal brines that were transported through independent aquifers and fluid pathways to the sites of mineralization. A low-temperature brine contained organic Br, I, and H 2 S, and a high-temperature metal-rich brine (〉370°C) that included a volumetrically minor magmato-metamorphic component was channeled up deeply penetrating thrust structures.

    Description: Trophoblast adhesion to the uterine wall is the requisite first step of implantation and, subsequently, placentation. At the maternal-fetal interface, we investigated the expression of selectin adhesion systems that enable leukocyte capture from the bloodstream. On the maternal side, human uterine epithelial cells up-regulated selectin oligosaccharide-based ligands during the window of receptivity. On the fetal side, human trophoblasts expressed L-selectin. This ligand-receptor system was functional, because beads coated with the selectin ligand 6-sulfo sLe(x) bound to trophoblasts, and trophoblasts bound to ligand-expressing uterine luminal epithelium in tissue sections. Megischus ptosimae Chao, 1964, from Fujian is redescribed and the specimen from India described as M. ptosimae Chao by van Achterberg (2002) is renamed as M. alveolifer spec. nov. and the Malaysian specimen of M. ducalis Westwood listed by van Achterberg (2002) is described as M. ducaloides spec. nov. M. ducalis Westwood, 1851, is reported for the first time from Cambodia, which is the first report after its description. A key to world species of the genus Stephanus is provided.

    Notes: The texture formation and development of Bi-based superconducting phases during the heat-treatment process are carefully investigated. With increasing anneal time, the (001) texture of both 2212 and 2223 phases is enhanced. The reduction of the interfacial energy due to a Bi2O2 layer in the cell is the main factor contributing to the texture formation. The texture of the parent phase and the interface parallel to the (001) plane are beneficial factors. The effects of sheathed Ag, second phases, and voids on the texture formation are studied. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The zero-field-cooling and the field-cooling temperature dependence of magnetization for Tl-1223/Ag superconducting tape were measured by using SQUID magnetometer at fields varying from 5 Oe to 5 T in the temperature range of 5–150 K. In the field-cooling curves, some anomalous behaviors, i.e., the positive Meissner effect in the curve of 5 Oe and the diamagnetic dip effect at fields up to 5 kOe, were observed. The diamagnetic dip minimum temperature shifts to the lower temperature as increasing the external field, and the relative amplitude decreases with increasing applied field. Moreover, the dip broadens with increasing applied field. The anomalous behaviors may be attributed to the flux pinning and the flux depinning of Josephson-junction networks in the sample. The dip effect at lower fields may be ascribed to the intergrain Josephson coupling networks, and that at higher fields may be due to the intrinsic intragrain Josephson coupling networks. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
