Notes: Optically transparent SrTi1−xSbxO3 (=0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20) thin films with transmittances higher than 85% in the visible region have been grown on SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed-laser deposition. Unless overdoped, the films possess a single-crystal phase and impurity conduction. The temperature dependence of the resistivities shows a metal–semiconductor transition for the film with x=0.05, and semiconducting behaviors for the films with x=0.10 and 0.15. The overdoped film with x=0.20 is an insulator. Sb concentration has a dominant effect on the electrical properties of the films, and the Anderson localization is probably the mechanism. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicate that the Sb impurity atoms provide donor electrons to form impurity states within the band gap, which is responsible for the electrical localized impurity. The wide band gap and the low density of states in the conduction band result in the transparency of the films. The disorder increases with Sb concentration, which is the main origin of the evolution of the electrical properties. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Preferential (001) orientation CeO2 films have been successfully grown on biaxially textured Ni substrates using ion beam assisted pulsed laser deposition. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns for the CeO2 films and target have been measured. The in-plane lattice constants have been derived from the data of XRD. It was found that the in-plane lattice constants of the films increase with increasing deposition temperature. A reasonable explanation based on the difference of the linear thermal expansion coefficient between the CeO2 film and Ni substrate was proposed. Moreover, Raman spectra of the films and target have been recorded. It was shown that the oxygen deficiency in the CeO2 samples has a great effect on the full width at half maximum of the Raman lines. According to the relation between the Gruneisen shift and the lattice contraction, we have obtained the theoretical Raman shifts which are in good agreement with the experimental results. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Accurate stress intensity solutions for multiple site damage (MSD) cracks in rivetedstiffened panels are difficult to determine due to geometric complexity along with variations in rivetload transfer and corrosion, especially the interaction of MSD cracks. A methodology was proposedfor efficiently depicting rivet in stiffened panel using finite elements. Rivet material properties weredetermined based on an empirical force-displacement relationship, for highly refined rivet model aswell as for idealized spring element representations of rivets. Parametric studies of panels with amiddle crack and a central stiffener indicate that rivets can provide comparable load transfer andrelative displacement if the rivets closed to the crack are explicit modeled. Using idealizedcombination of explicitly and spring element representations of rivets, the stress intensity factors(SIFs) for uncorroded and corroded one-bay stiffened panels were predicted. The results show that theeffect of MSD and thinning of the sheet is to increase substantially SIFs values compare to that of asingle crack without corrosion. But the SIF is insensitive to corrosion of stiffener. The particular rivetmaterial has relatively little effect on SIF values, while the rivet diameter has a significant effect

Notes: Abstract A bolometric technique was used to observe the nonradiative decay of surface plasmons in a silver film. This technique allowed us to separate the radiative and nonradiative relaxations of the plasmons and to determine the radiative quantum efficiency. It is suitable for both cw and pulsed laser beams and for both polarized and nonpolarized light.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the Gibbs-Appell' s equations of the nonholonomic controllable mechanical systems with variable mass in terms of quasi-velocities and quasi-accelerations are obtained, and the application of the new equation is illustrated by an example.

Notes: Many military aircraft have reached or exceeded their original design life, and have beensubject to significant increase in maintenance and repair cost due to multiple site damage (MSD). Inorder to assessing the effects of MSD on the structural integrity of aircraft lap joints, the wing lapjoint of certain model military aircraft with MSD was analyzed using special code FRANC2D/L. Therivet holes along the top row of the outer skin of lap joint were considered as the independentstructural unit for the simulated MSD cracks. The stress intensity factors (SIFs) at each crack tip withdifferent distribution loads at the rivet holes were computed and show that the analysis results havegood coherence with the available literature data. It also shows that the SIF at each crack tip [removed info]s afunction of crack length can be calculated by the crack growth simulation capability of FRANC2D/L.The SIF values are not sensitive to the rivet load distribution manner, which has seriously influenceon MSD crack growth direction. Rivet loading can be best molded quadratic load distribution overone half of rivet hole relative to uniform load distribution and point load. As a result of this analysis,it is postulated that for MSD in aircraft lap joints, compliance measurements may provide a usefultool for assessing the structural integrity of the lap joints

Notes: The corrosion, corrosion fatigue and fracture failure process of aircraft structure isdirectly concerned with combined effect of many factors, such as load, material characteristics, corrosive environment and so on. The process is very complicated, and there is typical randomness.Based on probabilistic fracture mechanics, with consideration of the limitation of the conventionalprobabilistic approaches for prediction of corrosion fatigue life of aircraft structure at present, and anew reliability approach under loading spectrum was proposed, in which corrosion damage andfatigue crack damage was united as a same damage parameter. Short crack and long crack growthbehavior was separately discussed, and influence of short crack aspect ratio on structure life wasdiscussed. The Advanced First-Order Reliability Method, Importance Sampling Method anditeratively advanced Second-Order Reliability Method were used to compute the fracture failureprobability. The results show that the model is feasible. By sensitivity analysis of random parameter, the important parameter was obtained, which helped to monitor the structure fatigue life

Notes: Abstract The specific activity of orotidine 5′-monophosphate (OMP) decarboxylase in cultured human fibroblasts is an exponential function of the concentration of cell protein in the extract. Low concentrations of uridylic or cytidylic acid augment the catalytic activity of dilute solutions of cell extract but not of concentrated ones. In the presence of urea, specific activity becomes independent of protein concentration, and uridylic or cytidylic acid augments activity over all concentrations of cell extract. These results, as well as other observations, suggest that the decarboxylase may be composed of subunits which are in dynamic equilibrium with an aggregate. At least one of the subunits is likely to have catalytic activity for the reaction, though less activity than the aggregate. The effect of the mutant gene for orotic aciduria on OMP decarboxylase is easily demonstrated when cell extracts are assayed in either the presence or the absence of urea.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper, we present the full Lagrangian of mesons (pseudoscalars, vectors and axial-vectors) to O(p 4) by using the explicit global chiral symmetry and hidden local symmetry in the chiral limit. In this approach, we see that there are many other terms besides the usual eleven terms given in the literature from a hidden local symmetry approach. In particular, there are some terms in our full results which are important for understanding the vector meson dominance and $\pi$ - $\pi$ scattering and providing consistent predictions on the decay rates of $a_1\rightarrow\gamma\pi$ and $a_1\rightarrow\rho\pi$ as well as for constructing a consistent effective chiral Lagrangian with chiral perturbation theory. It is likely that the structures of the effective chiral Lagrangian for O(p 4) given in the literature by using hidden local symmetry are incomplete and consequently the resulting couplings are not reliable. We examine the issue that the more general effective chiral Lagrangian given in the present paper can provide more consistent predictions for the low energy phenomenology of the $\rho$ -a 1 system and result in more consistent descriptions on the low energy behavior of light flavor mesons.
