Notes: Abstract The singularity of stress and strain at the tip of three-dimensional notch is analysed by the power expansion method, the eigenequation of the notch is gained through the boundary conditions of the notch, the eigenvalues under different inner angles of the notch are obtained, the expression of stress and strain at the tip of the notch is finally derived.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, problems of a shallow spherical shell with circular base under eccentrically applied concentrated loads are discussed. The solutions for six cases of eccentrically applied concentrated loads are given, namely: (1) Normal concentrated load, (2) Meridional tangential concentrated load, (3) Circumferential tangential concentrated load, (4) Concentrated moment in the tangential plane, (5) Concentrated moment in the meridional normal plane, (6) Concentrated moment in the circumferential normal plane. From the solutions of concentrated loads, the solutions of distributed line loads in the form of cosnθ along the circle are obtained.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the eigenequation of notch in Reissner plate is derived by the eigenfunction method. Eigenvalues of different notches with different angles are calculated by Muller iteration method. The expression of stress and strain at the tip of notch in Reissner plate is obtained.

Notes: Abstract The functional transformations of variational principles in elasticity are classified as three patterns: I relaxation pattern, II augmented pattern and III equivalent pattern. On the basis of pattern III, the generalized variational principles with several arbitrary parameters are formulated and their functionals are defined. They are: the generalized principle of single variable u with several parameters, the generalized principle of two variables u, σ with several parameters, the generalized principle of two variables u, ε with several parameters, and the generalized principle of three veriables u, ε, σ with several parameters. From these principles, a series of new forms of equivalent functionals can be obtained. When the values of these parameters are properly chosen, a series of finite element models can be formulated. In this paper, the question of losing effectiveness for Lagrange multiplier method is also discussed. In order to “recover” effectiveness for multiplier method, a modified method, namely, the variable substitution and multiplier method, is proposed.

Notes: Abstract Based on the generalized compatibility condition under constant and linear stress field, a quadrilateral generalized conforming isoparametric element, GC-Q6, for plane stress analysis, is developed. The element GC-Q6 can be regarded as an improved form of Wilson's non-conforming isoparametric element Q6. GC-Q6 can pass the patch test for arbitrary irregular mesh while Q6 can not. GC-Q6 degenerates to Q6 when it is a parallelogram. Numerical examples show that the GC-Q6 element gives more accurate stress solution than the existing non- conforming elements and is less sensitive to geometric distortion.
