    Notizen: The purpose of this paper is to understand the influence of laser annealing on the index of refraction of Al-doped ferrimagnetic garnet films in the near-infrared domain. It has been shown recently that a similar effect takes place in Ga-doped garnet films. According to theoretical predictions based on the photoelastic origin of the changes of the properties of a film after the local heat treatment, the effect of the variation of the index of refraction in Al-doped films should be several times greater than in the case of Ga-doped films. The experiment was carried out on Y1.73Bi1.23Fe3.69Al1.31O12 films. Phase diffraction gratings were fabricated in the films by means of laser annealing and thus a diffraction pattern of optical waveguide modes was analyzed with a photodetector. It has been shown that variations of the index of refraction as great as 10−3 were achieved. Thus it was demonstrated that the investigated effect is much stronger in Al-doped films compared to Ga-doped films. As in Ga-doped films, the dependence of the efficiency of diffraction on the number of an optical waveguide mode has been observed. That confirms the idea that the local value of the film thickness is changed as a consequence of the variation of the lattice parameter by heat treatment.

    Notizen: It is proposed that the main source of contrast of vertical Bloch lines (VBLs) in bubble garnets, when viewed by means of anisotropic dark field optical imaging, is a microdeformation of the wall plane at line location. The motive force for wall tilting is the compensation of the monopolar σ charges borne by VBLs. The tilted wall section acts as a phase object and allows for the formation of line images with well-defined symmetries and independent of the incident-beam polarization. All these features agree fully with experimental evidence. An approximate model of the wall deformation is presented and shown to be consistent for a given thickness and material parameters with the results of an ab initio numerical computation of the 3D structure of a VBL. The implications of the microdeformation model in terms of line observability are analyzed and compared with experimental data.

    Notizen: The dynamic susceptibility of arrays of narrow Permalloy stripes (9 mm × several μm × 200 nm) has been investigated using a single-coil broadband susceptibility spectrometer. Disagreement is observed between experimental results and the macroscopic Landau-Lifshitz model. This model does not take into account the dipolar interaction between magnetic stripes. We have performed micromagnetic calculations that include these dipolar interactions, and have found the resulting frequency dependence of the dynamic susceptibility in the linear regime to be in good agreement with our experimental data. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Giant magnetostriction (GMS) reported until now in exchange-coupled multilayers (ECML) present quasi-isotropic magnetostrictive behavior. In the present work it is shown the possibility to induce highly anisotropic GMS at low field with the single domain state in (TbFe/Fe)n multilayers when deposited by ion sputtering under a magnetic polarization field Hd. ECML grown under bias field Hd, applied along the large size of rectangular glass substrates present original magnetic and magnetoelastic (ME) properties associated with strong uniaxial behavior. After saturation by an external field H(parallel) applied parallel to the easy axis induced by Hd, a single domain state is kept by decreasing H(parallel) down to zero (Mr/Ms=1) which explains why there is no change of the magnetoelastic coefficient bγ,2 by increasing or decreasing H(parallel). A different behavior arises along the hard magnetization axis with a strong change of bγ,2 by increasing H(parallel) up to the saturation. ME anisotropy is the origin of high amplitude flexural and torsional oscillation modes as observed in our ECML. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We report here the first experimental observation of the longitudinal resonance mode in ferromagnets with a wandering axis (FWA). The mode is detected in amorphous Co93−xZr7(RE)x thin films with RE=Pr,Nd,Tb, and Dy, 0≤x≤4, but only if the film exhibits a very well defined in-plane uniaxial anisotropy field Hk. The experimental identification and some of the main properties of the longitudinal mode are reported and compared with theoretical predictions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) arrays of magnetic stripes, bars, or dots is presented from a very simple, fast, and low-cost technique of laser ablation. This process is alternative to the usual but heavier photolithography method. Ablated tracks have been produced with partial or total etching down to the magnetic layer substrate and width from 3 to 100 μm depending on the laser defocusing and power and the velocity of the sample induced by a motorized X–Y translation stage. Different patterns corresponding to magnetic stripes, bars, and square 2D arrays with different shape factors and sizes decreasing from millimeter to micron scale have been realized. Strong changes in both static and dynamical magnetic properties of the films are induced by the laser patterning as discussed from the magnetization processes of domain walls at low frequency and the complex permeability in the microwave range. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A high sensitivity of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) has been observed recently from soft magnetic layers such as NiFe, NiFeCo, and FeCoB.12 Amorphous CoZr alloys present ultrasoft properties compared to NiFe.3 GMR has been investigated for amorphous CoZr/Cu/Co thin films grown by rf diode sputtering using a target consisting of a Co disk partially covered with a Zr foil. The influence of the argon pressure on Cu layer deposition, Cu thickness, and Zr content on magnetic and transport properties was analyzed. The highest value of transverse GMR obtained along the easy axis is 3.6% and the MR curve was saturated in a magnetic field of 100 Oe at room temperature. GMR shows scaling behavior with the sample composition. Very high sensitivity, around 1–2%/Oe was observed in a CoZr (3 nm)/Cu (3 nm)/Co (2 nm) sandwich. This study shows a large dependence of GMR on Cu thickness and the maximum of magnetoresistance strongly depending on the Ar pressure which modifies the interface roughness. The Zr content also influences the magnetotransport properties (ΔR/R and ΔR/RΔH). The difference in coercivity between soft magnetic CoZr and hard magnetic Co layers induces antiferromagnetic alignment. Therefore a high MR ratio and field sensitivity are achieved by improving the magnetic properties of the CoZr layer.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: In the present paper a new kind of neutron De Broglie wave leaky coupler-guide structure is proposed. This new magnetic coupler allows only one neutron polarization to be coupled into a magnetic neutron thin film waveguide. It is shown theoretically that this new thin film coupler decrease considerably the losses due to the roughness of the interfaces of the multilayer structure. Moreover a transmitted resonance peak is observed in a wavelength region accessible only for guided neutron waves. Thus a magnetic neutron coupler is proposed and a transmitted polarized neutron guided wave is observed experimentally. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
