Description: Although a number of active source seismic experiments have been conducted over the last few decades to investigate the crustal structure in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, long-term observation to monitor underwater tectonic activities and changes in the cryospheric environment still remains challenging due to existence of sea ice in the study region. Korea Polar Research Institute has accomplished successful deployment of ocean bottom seismome-ters (OBS) in the Ross Sea collaborating with Alfred Wegener Institute during the period of 2011-2012 and 2014 by Korean icebreaker RV Araon. The OBS system manufactured by K.U.M. contains a hydrophone sensor that allow us to monitor underwater acoustics generated by tectonic and ice-related events. We present spectrograms of the continuous hydroacoustic data and various types of signals, e.g. seismic T-waves, iceequakes, and tremors. There are periodic and harmonic tremors that might be related with tidal modulation, and the seasonal variation of the background noise seems to be related with sea ice concentration.

Description: The Antarctic Ross Sea is one of the key regions for polar research activities. Research stations from several countries located at the coast are the base for inland expeditions. Even in the southern austral summer, the Ross Sea is party covered with drifting ice fields; this requires an icebreaker for all marine explorations. Therefore, large geophysical surveys in the Ross Sea are difficult. But the area is of special interest for seismologists: The Terror Rift in the western Ross Sea is a prominent neotectonic structure of the West Antarctic Rift System (WARS). It is located near the coast in the Victoria Land Basin and extends parallel to the Transantarctic Mountains. The rifting processes and the accompanying active onshore volcanism lead to increased seismicity in the region. The annual waxing and waning of the sea-ice and the dynamics of the large Ross Ice Shelf and nearby glaciers generate additional seismic signals. Investigation on seismological activities associated with the WARS and the cryogenic signals simultaneously would give us an unprecedented opportunity to have a better understanding of the Evolution of the WARS (EWARS) and the rapid change in the cryospheric environment nearby. The Korean Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) and the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI) have conducted a pilot study off the Korean Jang Bogo research station in the Terra Nova Bay by developing a collaborative research program (EWARS) since 2011 to explore seismicity and seismic noise in this region. Four broadband ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) from the German DEPAS pool were deployed in January 2012 with the Korean research icebreaker RV Araon. Three instruments could successfully be recovered after 13 months, the fourth OBS was not accessible due to local sea-ice coverage. We have successfully completed a second recovery operation It was retrieved one year late in January 2014. All stations recorded data of good quality, one station stopped after 8 months due to a recorder error. The OBS recovered in 2014 recorded more than 17 months of data until the batteries were discharged. In this contribution, we present data and first results from various seismological measurements, including temporal variation of seismic ambient noise studies, receiver functions, local seismicity, and ambient noise/noise correlation functions through examining the OBS data incorporating with the onshore seismic observation data.

Notes: The bulk (Bi〈sub〉0.2〈/sub〉iSb〈sub〉0.8〈/sub〉)〈sub〉2〈/sub〉Te〈sub〉3〈/sub〉thermoelectric alloys added with Ag up to 2.0 mass% were prepared by mechanical alloying and pulse discharge sintering (MA-PDS). Microstructures of the sintered samples were investigated. In the two samples with 1.0 and 2.0 mass% Ag, an abnormal growth of the (Bi,Sb)〈sub〉2〈/sub〉Te〈sub〉3〈/sub〉phase, manifested by the formation of coarse crystals that are visible with eye, has been revealed during the PDS process of the alloyed powders. The local temperature rise inthe compact induced by the compositional fluctuation as a result of Ag addition was suggested to be responsible for the observed abnormal growth. In addition, the electrical transport properties, i.e., electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient, of the sintered samples were studied

Notes: Abstract We consider lattice boson systems interacting via potentials which are superstable and regular. By using the Wiener integral formalism and the concept of conditional reduced density matrices we are able to give a characterization of Gibbs (equilibrium) states. It turns out that the space of Gibbs states is nonempty, convex, and also weak-compact if the interactions are of finite range. We give a brief discussion on the uniqueness of Gibbs states and the existence of phase transitions in our formalism.

Notes: Abstract For each γ ∈ [0, 1] we consider the Dirichlet form ℰ $$_\mu ^\gamma$$ and the associated Dirichlet operator $$H_\mu ^\gamma$$ for the Gibbs measure μ of quantum unbounded spin systems interacting via superstable and regular potential. The Gibbs measure μ is related to the Gibbs state of the system via a (functional) Euclidean integral procedure. The configuration space for the spin systems is given by $$\Omega : = E^{\mathbb{Z}^v } ,$$ $$E: = \left\{ {\omega \in C\left( {\left[ {0,1} \right];\mathbb{R}^d } \right):\omega \left( 0 \right) = \omega \left( 1 \right)} \right\}.$$ We formulate Dirichlet forms in the framework of rigged Hilbert spaces which are related to the space Ω. Under appropriate conditions on the potential, we show that the Dirichlet operator $$H_\mu ^{\left( \gamma \right)}$$ is essentially self-adjoint on the domain of smooth cylinder functions. We give sufficient conditions on the potential so that the corresponding Gibbs measure is uniformly log-concave (ULC). This property gives the spectral gap of the Dirichlet operator $$H_\mu ^{\left( \gamma \right)}$$ at the lower end of the spectrum. Furthermore, we prove that under the conditions of (ULC), the unique Gibbs measure μ satisfies the log-Sobolev inequality (LS). We use an approximate argument used in the study of the same subjects for loop spaces, which in turn is a modification of the method originally developed by S. Albeverio, Yu. G. Kondratiev, and M. Röckner.

Notes: Effect of Au (0-0.3 wt.%) on the thermoelectric properties of Bi1Sb3Te6 alloy prepared by mechanical alloying process has been investigated. The Seebeck coefficient decreases with Au content. The Seebeck coefficient of Au-free alloy at room temperature reaches a value of 250 µV/K, which is the maximum. Because of the increased power factor, the figure of merit increases with Au content up to 0.03 wt. % and its value at room temperature is about 2.8×10-3/K, the highest valueamong the prepared alloys. The Hall measurement shows that the carrier concentration increases with Au content, which explains the reason why the power factor has increased. The XRD patterns show that the intensities of (2 0 5), (0 0 18), (0 2 10), (1 0 19), (1 2 5), and (2 1 10) planes increase with Aucontent. The atomic distance of these complex planes is longer than that of other main planes, and the chemical bonding strength of these complex planes between constitutional elements is weaker than that of other main planes. As a result, a portion of electrons as minor carrier is trapped into accept level of Au atoms and/or clusters. The XPS observation result, which a portion of Au atoms is chemically shifted in contrast to Bi, Sb and Te atoms are not, explains that Au behaves as an acceptor

Notes: Abstract We consider quantum unbounded spin systems (lattice boson systems) in ν-dimensional lattice space Zν. Under appropriate conditions on the interactions we prove that in a region of high temperatures the Gibbs state is unique, is translationally invariant, and has clustering properties. The main methods we use are the Wiener integral representation, the cluster expansions for zero boundary conditions and for general Gibbs state, and explicitly β-dependent probability estimates. For one-dimensional systems we show the uniqueness of Gibbs states for any value of temperature by using the method of perturbed states. We also consider classical unbounded spin systems. We derive necessary estimates so that all of the results for the quantum systems hold for the classical systems by straightforward applications of the methods used in the quantum case.
