Description:
Author(s): Li Yin, Wenbo Mi, and Xiaocha Wang The authors use first-principles calculations to investigate tetragonal Fe 4 N/BiFeO 3 heterostructures, with the goal of realizing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and high spin polarization simultaneously in a ferromagnet. The presence of Fe in inequivalent sites at the interface is key, and can switch the anisotropy from in-plane to perpendicular. These results point to design opportunities for spintronic devices, such as STT-MRAM. [Phys. Rev. Applied 6, 064022] Published Thu Dec 29, 2016
