Notes: Abstract. A daily multi-layered water balance (DAMUWAB) approach has been formulated with modest input data on daily climatic records, slope gradient, physical soil properties and basic crop characteristics, for predicting the water and oxygen availability in freely drained soils of semiarid as well as subhumid tropical cropping systems. In this study, a simple one-dimensional root extension model is coupled to a water-uptake model that differentiates the uptake capacity of roots according to their depth. It has an intermediate level of detail between functional, 10-day period single-layered water balance (DESIWAB) approaches for land evaluation purposes, and the descriptive, daily water balances used in many crop growth models. Modelling capacity, functionality and expandability of DAMUWAB surpass the performance of DESIWAB. Water and oxygen shortages occurring in each compartment were found to limit water uptake and transpiration. Sensitivity analysis and comparison of DAMLWAB with the worldwide operational DESIWAB approach proved successful for model validation in the tropics and subtropics.

Notes: Two different reaction mechanisms for Ti50C50 and Ti33B67 have been observed respectively during milling in a planetary ball mill. It is shown that a gradual reaction occurred during milling Ti50C50, while a self-sustained reaction was obtained during milling Ti33B67 under the same milling condition. Compared with the results of milling Ti50C50 in a spex mill, the difference in mechanism is suggested to be caused by the effect of plastic deformation on the changes of fine grains and internal strain during milling, and the different formation heat of TiC and TiB2, which is the driving force for the reactions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Titanium carbide (TiC) has been synthesized by mechanically alloying the elemental powder mixture of titanium and graphite at composition of Ti1−xCx (x=0.35, 0.43, 0.50). Under the employed milling condition, the formation of TiC has been found to undergo an abrupt, exothermic reaction. The final product is TiC for x=0.43 and 0.50, and TiC+Ti (small amount) for x=0.35. It is suggested that this reaction appears to be a self-sustained high-temperature synthesis process. The initial milling stage seems to be an incubation duration for the reaction, and the mechanical impacts to be the ignition of the following abrupt reaction. It is believed that this type of reaction is an important mechanism for mechanical alloying of the highly exothermic alloy systems. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : The effect of peanut butter manufacture on vitamin E originating from raw peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L., runner-type) was determined. Tocopherols were quantified by normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. No significant differences were observed in tocopherol (T) values between 1998 and 1999 crop raw peanuts or between raw peanuts and peanut butter except for γ-T (P 〉 0.05). Oil and stabilizer added to the roasted peanuts during peanut butter processing provided 4% of α-T in the finished peanut butter. Retention of total tocopherols during peanut butter manufacture was 95%. Mean α-T values (mg/100 g) of commercial peanut products ranged from 12.3 (peanut oil) to 4.1 (dry roasted peanuts).

Notes: Alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherols (α-, β-, γ- and δ-T) were quantified in pecans (seedlings, Desirable, Stuart and Schley) of 2 crop year by using a direct extraction method coupled with normal-phase HPLC. % recoveries of the assay were about 98, 92, 97, and 97 for α-, β-, γ- and δ-T, respectively. Accuracy was excellent with low % CVs for all tocopherols. Overall precision was good except for δ-T, which was not resolved from an unidentified interference. There were significant differences in tocopherol contents among cultivars (p 〈 0.05). No significant difference was observed in α-TE (tocopherol equivalent) between 1998 and 1999 crop year for Stuart and Schley (p 〉 0.05), but α-TE content of Desirable and seedling did vary (p 〈 0.05). γ-T was the predominant tocopherol for all pecan samples ranging from 20.1 to 29.3 mg/100 g. α-, β-, and δ-T occurred in low levels. Tocotrienols were not present. α-TE ranged from 3.3 to 4.2 in the different cultivars.

Notes: : A simple, rapid procedure using direct solvent extraction and liquid chromatography was developed for the simultaneous determination and identification of α-tocopheryl acetate, β-carotene and tocopherols in reduced-fat mayonnaise. The method used a zero-control reference material (ZRM) (made in-house from olive oil and eggs) for accuracy determination. The vitamins and β-carotene were quantified by fluorescence and photodiode array detectors, respectively. The overall % recoveries (mean±S.D.)(n=5) for β-carotene, α-tocopheryl acetate, α-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol and δ-tocopherol were 101.4±1.4, 99.0±4.2, 102.0±3.6, 101.3±4.4 and 101.9±6.2, respectively. The method differentiates between natural and synthetic forms of vitamin E for accurate assessment of vitamin E biological activity. Comparative assays were performed using both direct solvent extraction and saponification.

Notes: Identifies the intermetallics formed in Sn-0.5Cu-3.5Ag and Sn-3.5Ag-0.5Cu-0.5B (wt%) lead-free solders, and the influence of boron on these precipitates. SEM, TEM and SIMS were employed to reveal the difference of microstructure in both solder alloys. It was found that the intermetallics formed were Ag3Sn and Cu6Sn5. Both solders were found to have a dispersion structure of Ag3Sn particles with network-shaped subgrains. The microstructure of Ag3Sn was also found to become finer and more uniform in Sn-3.5Ag-0.5Cu-0.5B solder, due to the addition of boron, while there was little effect from the boron on the Cu6Sn5 phase.

Notes: Abstract  In situ scanning electron microscope observations of short crack growth in both a poly-crystal and a single-crystal alloy revealed that fatigue cracks may grow in a shear decohesion mode over a length that is several times the grain size, far beyond the conventional stage I regime. In the poly-crystal aluminium alloy 2024-T351, fatigue cracks were found to continue to grow along one shear band even after two mutually perpendicular shear bands had formed at the crack tip. For the single-crystal alloy specimen with the loading axis being nearly perpendicular to its main shear plane, mode I fatigue cracks were found to grow along the shear band. These two types of fatigue crack growth pose a significant challenge to the existing fatigue crack growth correlating parameters that are based on crack-tip opening displacement. In particular, it has been found that the cyclic crack-tip opening displacement, which accounts for both large-scale yielding and the lack of plasticity-induced crack closure, is unable to unify the growth rates of short and long cracks in aluminium 2024-T351, suggesting a possible dependence of crack growth threshold on crack length.
