    Notes: Male and female F344 rats, 48 per exposure group, were sham exposed (Group A) or exposed to 0.5 (Group B) and 5 mT (Group C) magnetic fields for two years. Animals were exposed from 5-109 weeks of age in SPF conditions according to the OECD test guideline No. 451. Average exposure was 22.6 hr/day. No significant differences in body weight and food consumption were observed between the sham and exposed groups. At the end of the exposure period, survival rates of the male rats were 73, 83, and 79%, and those of the females, 77, 79, and 75% for Groups A, B, and C, respectively, with no significant differences between groups. Differential counts of leukocytes were measured at the 52nd, 78th, and 104th weeks of exposure and no significant differences were observed between the exposure groups. All survivors were euthanized on schedule, and all the organs and tissues suspected of tumoral lesions were examined histopathologically. Incidences of mononuclear cell leukemia in the male and the female rats were 5, 4, 4 and 8, 6, 7 for Groups A, B and C, respectively; incidences of malignant lymphoma in the female rats were 0, 1 and 1. Neither significant increases nor acceleration of incidence of leukemia were observed. Incidences of brain and intracranial tumors did not increase in the exposed groups. Incidences of both benign and malignant neoplasms showed no significant difference between the exposed and sham exposed groups with one exception: fibroma of the subcutis in the male rats, which was considered not to be a statistically significant when evaluated with respect to the historical control data in our laboratory.     Notes: The facility consists of a 12 × 11.5 × 2.4 m high room containing six sets of exposure apparatus and the other equipment necessary to maintain a pathogen-free system. The apparatus sets produced 5 mT (rms), 0.5 mT, or a sham exposure. The apparatus was arranged in the room to minimize the fringing field of the 5 mT set at the sham position. Each set was 3.85 × 1.80 × 0.66 m in outside dimension, containing 24 cages in the magnetically homogeneous region. The apparatus was designed using Harvey's figure-eight-configuration and generated a horizontal sinusoidal alternating field. In order to save electric power, the coil of the apparatus constituted a 50 Hz LC resonance circuit with a condensor bank to which electric power was supplied to compensate losses. Magnetic flux density was kept constant by controlling the coil current. Although mild steel was used in the skeleton of the building, the fringing flux at the sham was as low as 0.1 to 1 μT. Stainless steel was used for ventilating ducts, racks for the cages, cage covers, feeder baskets, and watering nozzles. The homogeneity of the field was measured to be ± 10% in the animal residence area, and food and water consumption was found to be unaffected by the field. At 5 mT, the coil current was 370 A, and the hollow coil was cooled by a stream of 20°C water to prevent both heat and dew on the coil surface. Vibration and acoustic noise was prevented by fiber reinforced plastic framework of the coil. High harmonic distortion was not observed at the output terminal of the coil driver. The facility has operated without trouble for 2 years. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Description: An electric field–temperature ( E-T ) phase diagram for a lead-free 0.5 mol. % Mn-doped Bi(Na 0.1 K 0.9 )TiO 3 ceramics was investigated. The x-ray diffraction, dielectric and polarization measurements revealed relaxor behavior and were used to characterize the stability regions of the non-ergodic relaxor, ergodic relaxor and electric field induced ferroelectric states. As indicated by the polarization–current density profiles, transformation between two electric fields, induced ferroelectric states with opposite polarization direction arise via a two-step process through an intermediate relaxor state. Interplay between the ferroelectric state conversion and intermediate relaxor state is governed by the dynamics of polarization relaxation. The presented E-T phase diagram revealed the effects of the applied electric field and temperature on stability regions. This is of special interest since the Bi 0.5 (Na 0.1 K 0.9 ) 0.5 TiO 3 ceramics were proposed as a potential piezoceramic material.

    Description: Useful dielectric properties for high-temperature ceramic capacitors are demonstrated in a non-perovskite oxide, Ca(Ti 0.85 Zr 0.15 )SiO 5 , which is mainly composed of one-dimensional chains of oxygen octahedra that are mutually linked by SiO 4 tetrahedra. Its dielectric constant and low temperature coefficient of capacitance were found to be 43 and −102 ppm/K, respectively, over the wide temperature range of 300–780 K. The high insulating performance was also indicated by the high resistivity, exceeding 10 11  Ω cm up to 523 K. The systematic dielectric measurements for Ca(Ti 1− x Zr x )SiO 5 as functions of the composition and temperature indicate that the suppression of the anti-ferroelectric phase transition of CaTiSiO 5 by Zr 4+ -substitution is a key to improve the temperature-stability and the high-resistivity in Ca(Ti 1− x Zr x )SiO 5 . The present results shed light on the development of a designing principle for ceramic capacitors for the high-temperature use.

    Description: The properties of a potentially new class of ferroelectric materials based on wurtzite-structured ZnO thin films are examined using the first-principles calculations. Theoretical P-E hysteresis loops were calculated using the fixed- D method for both unstrained and (biaxially) strained single crystals. Ferroelectric polarization switching in ZnO (S.G. P 6 3 mc ) is shown to occur via an intermediate non-polar structure with centrosymmetric P 6 3 / mmc symmetry by displacement of cations relative to anions in the long-axis direction. The calculated coercive electric field (E c ) for polarization switching was estimated to be 7.2 MV/cm for defect-free monocrystalline ZnO. During switching, the short- and long-axis lattice parameters expand and contract, respectively. The large structural distortion required for switching may explain why ferroelectricity in this compound has not been reported experimentally for pure ZnO. Applying an epitaxial tensile strain parallel to the basal plane is shown to be effective in lowering E c during polarization, with a 5% biaxial expansion resulting in a decrease of E c to 3.5 MV/cm. Comparison with calculated values for conventional ferroelectric materials suggests that the ferroelectric polarization switching of wurtzite-structured ZnO may be achievable by preparing high-quality ZnO thin films with suitable strain levels and low defect concentrations.
