    Notes: Macroporous biomaterials based on a-tricalcium phosphate (a-TCP) bone cement with porous structures suitable for implantation purposes were prepared in the present work. According to the reversible swelling/deswelling behavior of gelatin at a single temperature or pH, a “self-setting” method that uses gelatin granules as pore formers was developed to process the porous microstructure. By mixing gelatin powder and bone cement powder (BCP), and adding water (1% solution of NaH2PO4×HO) to form pastes which set within 15 to 30 min, this setted cement was then immerged in deionized water of temperature 25°C or 32°C for hydration. During the hydration, the pH of deionized water after cement pastes were introduced at 32°C changed from 8.6 to 7.2 which caused by the transformation of a-TCP to hydroxyapatite (HA). Meanwhile, gelatin particles will swell by water uptake to form large size spheres in cementmatrix. This swelling behavior is sensitive to the variation of pH value. After hydration for 4 day, a body containing gelatin gel spheres was obtained. Then heating the deionized water to temperature 50°C, gelatin spheres in cement matrix were solved and porous microstructure composed of larger pore sizes corresponding approximately to the average size ofthe swelling gelatin granules was obtained. The porous bodies by this technique were found to have tractable and interconnected porosity in the range of 60~84%, with typical pore sizes ranging from 100~300 microns. This new processing technique can be used in the manufacture of unsintered biomaterials

    Notes: The aqueous swelling kinetics of a series of crosslinked chitosan (cr-CS) with glutaraldehyde (GA) interpenetrating polyether hydrogels have been studied as functions of pH, the N-deacetylation degree of chitosan, the amount of crosslinking agent, the electrolyte composition in solution, temperature, and gel composition. Based on these results, the swelling mechanism of the hydrogels was discussed. The release profiles of chlorhexidini acetas from the semi-IPN were also investigated. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description / Table of Contents: Ein neuartiger Polyelektrolyt-Komplex (PEC) wurde aus den beiden natürlich vorkommenden Polyelektrolytliganden Chitosan (CS) and Pektin (PTn) hergestellt. Die PEC-Zusammensetzung sowie deren Einfluß auf das Quellungsverhalten der PEC wurden untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß die Quellungseigenschaften des Polyelektrolyt-Komplexes von dessen Zusamensetzung sowie von dem Deacetylierungsgrad von CS und dem Methoxylierungsgrad von PTn abhängen.
    Notes: This paper deals with a novel polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) of two natural polyelectrolyte ligands, i.e. chitosan (CS) and pectin (PTn). The composition and its effect on the swelling properties of this CS-PTn PEC were studied. The results reveal that the swelling of the polyelectrolyte complex is connected with its composition and is also affected by the degree of deacetylation of CS and the methoxy degree of PTn.

    Notes: For the purpose of flame retardation, nylon 6 textile was first hydroxymethylated and then the methylol group containing nylon 6 textile was finished with Pyrovatex CP at 160-170°C. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value increased from 23.6 for the original textile to 31.4 for the modified one. The mechanism of flame retardation was investigated using thermogravimetry (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Results reveal that Pyrovatex CP plays a flame-retarding role in both the condensed and gas phases.

    Notes: This article deals with a novel, semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN), composed of crosslinked chitosan (cr-CS) with glutaraldehyde (GA) and polyether. The pH responsibility of swelling data shows that swelling reaches a maximum at pH = 3.19 and a minimum at pH = 13. The concentration of chitosan acetic acid solution, the amount of crosslinking agent, and polyether, have effects on the swelling behavior of the network. Stimulating-response of the semi-IPN, induced by abrupt changes of pH between 1 and 13, is discussed as well. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Acrylate copolymer composed of octadecyl acrylate (OA), 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (2-EHA), hydroxythyl acrylate (HEA), and vinyl acetate (VA) was synthesized. The copolymer was used to adhere polyethylene (PE) with T-type peel, strength 4.4 N/cm. The interfacial characteristics of copolymer and PE were investigated via ATR-FTIR, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and dynamic contact angle (DCA). Results show that apolar moieties of the adhesive enrich on the interface. Moreover, the time dependence of peel strength coincides with that of enrichment in nonpolar moieties on the interface. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A study was carried out on the variation in the electrical resistance of carbon fiber-reinforced unsaturated polyester/polyurethane (UP/PU) IPN composites during static tension, cyclical loading, and unloading in tension. The resistance was found to vary nonlinearly with strain and increase abruptly when the composite approached the fracture. Under a certain constant tension, the change in electrical resistance showed time dependece, and it is suggested that the creep of the IPN network imposed an impact on the variation of resistance. The resistance probing revealed that carbon fiber-reinforced plastic can function as a sensor that is capable of self-diagnosing the fatal fracture in composites. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
