Notes: The scanning laser line source (SLLS) technique is a novel laser-based inspection methodfor the ultrasonic detection of small surface-breaking defects. The SLLS approach is based onmonitoring the change in laser generated ultrasound as a laser line source is scanning over a defect. It has provided enhanced signal-to-noise performance compared to the traditional pitch-catch orpulse-echo ultrasonic methods. In this paper, an experimental method is presented to detect surfaceacoustic waves (SAW) with polyvinylindene fluoride(PVDF) transducer. The ultrasonic signal isconverted into electric signal by piezoelectricity of the PVDF, which is attached to a micro-knifeedge clamped on a metal device. The SAW are excited by employing a pulsed Nd:YAG laser onaluminum plate with artificial surface-breaking defects. The laser line source is accurately shiftedby the motorized translation stage, while the PVDF is located at a fixed position on the specimen. When the laser line source is scanning over the defect, the ultrasonic signals are monitored, meanwhile the characteristic changes in the amplitude and frequency content are observed.Consequently, the position of the defect can be determined by analyzing the obtained signals. Theexperimental system with high sensitivity provides a detection method of small surface-breakingdefects on metal and gives convincing experimental evidence for the interaction mechanismbetween the SAW and the surface-breaking defects

Notes: A computational model is proposed to analyze the nanoscale self-assemblingphenomenon of monolayers on heterogeneous surfaces. Morse potential is used to describe the pairpotentialbetween molecules or atoms. Minimization of free energy is used to regulate differentphases and lattices to form optimized heterogeneous structures of different sizes with periodicalpatterns. A representative volume element (RVE) is first defined and an optimization algorithm isdeveloped to adjust the positions of particles in it to reduce its potential until global equilibrium isreached. The pair-potential distribution in the monolayer and the substrate layers are studied. It isinteresting to observe that the pair-potential distribution in the substrate layers resumes uniformityjust a few layers away from the interfacial boundary

Notes: Analysis of dynamic behavior of soil-structure interaction (SSI) is a complicated problemdue to the complexities of soil behaviors and dynamic analysis. It is difficult to solve SSI withanalytical methods. However, numerical methods with highly developed computer technique areefficient. Based on the advanced nonlinear finite element analysis software MSC.Marc, SSI on loessground is studied. An approach for the application of MSC.Marc in SSI analysis is presented and anexample is given. Hyperbolic soil constitutive relationship and viscous boundary conditions areadopted in the soil model. Moreover, contact between the embedded columns and the adjacent soilis considered. Response spectrum analysis of the result is carried out. Some conclusions about theseismic response of soil-structure system under different soil stiffness and different soil-layerthickness conditions are given. A new way of analyzing SSI for loess ground is provided

Notes: Ductile frame structures are generally designed with column over-design factors (COF)to assure plastic hinges occurring in all beams and avoid unpreferable failure modes. In order toavoid story mechanisms of frame structure constructed with elastic-plastic materials, target COFhas been investigated where the relative occurrence probability of most likely story mechanism islimited within a specific tolerance. In the present paper, the concept of basic and optimum columnover-design factor for avoiding story mechanism are proposed and the value of them for multi-spanmulti-story ductile frames are presented based on a comprehensive investigation on the occurrenceorder of story mechanisms. The basic COF is defined as the critical value that the preferable failuremode and unpreferable failure mode are with the same failure probability, and it is the low limitassuring the entire beam-hinging pattern prior to story mechanisms. For a structure designed with aCOF less than basic COF, the plastic hinges are easier to occur in partial stories to form storymechanism. The optimum COF is the most effective and economy COF to enhance the safety ofstructure, and it is resulted from the shift of priority of plastic hinges in different stories. Therelationships between the basic and optimum COF with calculation parameters are also analyzed inthis paper

Notes: In ultimate asseismic design of ductile frame structures, plastic deformation and plastichinge are generally permitted, and some preferred failure modes are often selected. It is animportant problem that whether the designed structure collapses according to the designed failuremode, because of the large uncertainties included in external loads and member strength. In thispaper, an identification procedure of failure modes for frame structures is developed, and the likelycollapse modes of frame structures under uncertain load and member strength are investigatedunder assumption of normal distributed and non-normal distributed external loads and memberstrength. It is found that the occurrence order of likely collapse mode is much influenced by thedistribution of the random variables. The occurrence order of collapse modes for column overdesigned structures are investigated and it is found that the increase of column over-design factorcan effectively avoid the story collapse mode in probabilistic means

Notes: This paper focuses on an experimental investigation and theoretical analysis of differenttypes of RC shear wall with the profile steel braces in two side columns and diagonal profile steelbraces of walls subjected to applied repeated cyclic loads. Fifteen RC shear walls with differentshear span ratio are tested and their aseismic charactertics are studied. The effect of profile steelbracings on failure property, bearing capacity, ductility and hysteretical characteristic of shear wallis investigated based on experimental results. It is shown that adding the profile steel braces on theboundary column and inner of walls can obviously enhance the ultimate strength of specimens andimprove their aseismic characteristics. Finally, the mechanical model of the shear wall is presentedand the formulae for calculating the load-carrying capacity are developed. Numerical analysesindicate that the theoretical results agree well with those from experiments

Notes: Abstract We apply the Batalin-Fradkin algorithm combined with the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky formalism to the generalized Schwinger model. We obtain the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin invariant action showing that the auxiliary fields introduced in the algorithm turn into the Wess-Zumino scalar.

Description: Spinal gastrin-releasing peptide receptor-expressing (GRPR+) neurons play an essential role in itch signal processing. However, the circuit mechanisms underlying the modulation of spinal GRPR+neurons by direct local and long-range inhibitory inputs remain elusive. Using viral tracing and electrophysiological approaches, we dissected the neural circuits underlying the inhibitory control of spinal GRPR+neurons. We found that spinal galanin+GABAergic neurons form inhibitory synapses with GRPR+neurons in the spinal cord and play an important role in gating the GRPR+neuron-dependent itch signaling pathway. Spinal GRPR+neurons also receive inhibitory inputs from local neurons expressing neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). Moreover, spinal GRPR+neurons are gated by strong inhibitory inputs from the rostral ventromedial medulla. Thus, both local and long-range inhibitory inputs could play important roles in gating itch processing in the spinal cord by directly modulating the activity of spinal GRPR+neurons.
