Notes: Stainless-steel and Mo sheathed PbMo6 S8 wires have been fabricated by hot working from modified PbS, Mo, and MoS2 mixed powders which were prepared by reacting Pb, Mo, and S at 530 °C. Critical current densities were investigated for different preparation conditions, and it is revealed that obtaining continuous current path between PbMo6 S8 grains is the most important factor to achieve high critical current density. The Jc value of 2.8×104 A/cm2 (8 T), 7.8×103 A/cm2 (15 T), and 1.3×103 A/cm2 (23 T) was observed for the PbMo6 S7.0 wire heat treated at 700 °C.

Notes: Chemical-vapor-deposited Nb3Ge tapes 2.5 mm wide with Nb3Ge layer thickness of 5–60 μm were prepared under various processing conditions. Though the depth profile of the Nb concentration in the Nb3Ge tapes determined by x-ray microanalysis was fairly uniform, with a variation less than 4 at. % for many Nb3Ge tapes, the distribution of the Nb concentration over the whole cross section of the Nb3Ge layer varied considerably, with a variation of 10–18 at. % for various Nb3Ge tapes. In this distribution, Nb concentrations at the tape edges were found to be higher than those on its sides for all of the Nb3Ge tapes prepared. The origin of this singular distribution of the composition is discussed. The Tc values for narrower tapes cut out lengthwise from the 2.5-mm-wide tapes were measured resistively. They correlated closely with the compositional distribution in the cross section of the Nb3Ge tapes. The Tc values (midpoints) of Nb3Ge tapes incorporating compositions within the Nb concentration range of 70–75 at. % were found to be near or above 20 K.

Notes: Fabrication process, critical current densities (Jc), and microstructure of the superconducting PbMo6S8 wires with Mo barriers have been investigated. Reducing the volume fraction of the Mo barrier and using electron-beam-melted Mo with less deformation resistance than that of conventional powder-metallurgy-processed Mo, facilitate the densification of PbMo6S8 and Jc improvement by the hot-isostatic-pressing (HIP) treatments. We have succeeded in obtaining reproducibly HIP treated PbMo6S8 wires with homogeneously high Jc≥108 A/m2 at 22 T and 4.2 K, which is promising for the production of future high field ((approximately-greater-than)20 T) superconducting magnets.

Notes: The microstructure of Mo-sheathed Chevrel-phase superconducting wires was investigated by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Excess Pb forms small nodules (10–30 nm) on the Chevrel-phase grains or wetting layers between the Chevrel grains. The critical current density Jc is strongly reduced when wetting layers are present. However, second-phase Mo exists as islands as large as 2–10 μm and has little harmful effect on Jc. Although some Mo-sheathed wires sintered at 700 °C show relatively high Jc ( ≥ 2 × 108 A/m2 at 8 T), the Chevrel phase in these wires has a very porous microstructure, and the Jc values measured with a magnetic field parallel to the current, Jc((parallel)), were only about 10% higher than the Jc values measured with a field perpendicular to the current, Jc(⊥). This clearly suggests that the transport current flows percolatively in these wires. Much denser microstructures were obtained by hot-isostatic-pressing (HIP) treatments at 1200 °C, and very high Jc values, (approximately-greater-than) 5 × 108 A/m2 at 8 T and 9.3 × 107 A/m2 at 23 T, which are of the order of the highest Jc values so far reported, were observed. High-resolution SEM observations of HIP'ed wires demonstrate that the interconnectivity between the Chevrel grains was much improved.

Notes: Critical current densities Jc were measured in as-deposited, c-axis-oriented Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox thin films with Tc values as high as 97 K, which were prepared by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition. These films showed high Jc ((approximately-greater-than)109 A/m2) at 77.3 K in high magnetic fields (≥1 T, H(parallel)a-b plane). The best values are 3.3×109 A/m2 at 1 T and 9.1×108 A/m2 at 8 T, which are the highest Jc for Bi-oxide thin films among those reported so far. There were no signs of weak links in the Jc(H) behavior, and the surface morphology examined by scanning electron microscopy showed no apparent grain boundaries. The values of Jc decreased sharply when the applied field deviated from the a-b plane, and went to zero at the angles where the field component in the c direction is nearly equal to the irreversibility field Hc2* parallel to the c axis. The angular dependence of Jc of these films is most reasonably explained by the theory of intrinsic pinning.

Notes: Field-orientedY1Ba2Cu3Oy samples with various values of the transport critical current density, Jc, have been prepared with various heat treatments. The Jc increased rapidly with an increase in relative sintered density of the oriented samples. The field-oriented samples with higher Jc had grains of larger sizes and better connections between the neighboring grains than the low Jc samples. The maximum values of Jc at a magnetic field of 7 T were 370 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 24 A/cm2 at 77 K. The hysteresis in the Jc-H curves at 4.2 K decreased with an increase in Jc both for an applied field H(parallel)ab plane and for H(parallel)c axis. The critical currents of the samples with higher Jc were less degraded by aging in the air for 1 year than those of the low Jc samples. The relation between the field-cooled Jc-H curves and the zero-field-cooled ones for an oriented sample with low Jc is qualitatively interpreted by the effect of the intragrain currents on the intergrain fields.

Notes: Temperature and magnetic field dependence of the critical current density Jc and magnetization of the polycrystalline high Tc oxide superconductor YBa2Cu3Oy have been measured. At low temperature, Jc shows a different temperature dependence between field cooling and zero-field cooling, that is, the Jc value measured when the sample was cooled in a fixed magnetic field was larger than that measured when the sample was cooled in zero magnetic field and then a magnetic field was applied. This irreversible behavior of Jc disappeared at a reduced temperature difference 1–t proportional to H2/3 (H is the magnetic field). Moreover, we have observed that the slope dV/dJ just above Jc began to increase rapidly with increasing temperature above 70 K. These experimental results can be attributed to the effects of grain boundaries.

Notes: We have observed the reduction of the microwave surface resistance Rs of YBa2Cu3Oy films deposited on MgO substrates by covering the films with an overdoped Y1−xCaxBa2Cu3Oy layer. At low temperature, Rs of the YBa2Cu3Oy film covered by an Y1−xCaxBa2Cu3Oy (x=0.2) layer was half that of the single YBa2Cu3Oy film. On the other hand, the single Y1−xCaxBa2Cu3Oy (x=0.2) films did not exhibit low loss characteristics. The diffusion of Ca ions into the YBa2Cu3Oy layer was observed and the selective diffusion of Ca ions to the grain boundaries of the YBa2Cu3Oy layer is considered to be the origin of the low Rs in the covered YBa2Cu3Oy films. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigated distributions of electric field E and current density J in disk-shaped superconductors exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field Ba that is swept at a constant rate β=dBa/dt. The expressions of the dependence of the magnetization M on the field-sweep rate β were derived for arbitrary E–J characteristics taking into account the distributions of E and J accurately. We measured the dependence of M on β in a YBa2Cu3O7 disk, and estimated the E–J characteristics using the theoretical analysis. Furthermore, distribution of J(r) was estimated from the E(r) distribution and E–J characteristics. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
