Description: Long-distance entanglement distribution is essential for both foundational tests of quantum physics and scalable quantum networks. Owing to channel loss, however, the previously achieved distance was limited to ~100 kilometers. Here we demonstrate satellite-based distribution of entangled photon pairs to two locations separated by 1203 kilometers on Earth, through two satellite-to-ground downlinks with a summed length varying from 1600 to 2400 kilometers. We observed a survival of two-photon entanglement and a violation of Bell inequality by 2.37 ± 0.09 under strict Einstein locality conditions. The obtained effective link efficiency is orders of magnitude higher than that of the direct bidirectional transmission of the two photons through telecommunication fibers.

Description: There are over 2,300 lakes over 1 km2 in China (total area 80 000 km2). In addition there are approximately 87 000 reservoirs with a storage capacity of 413 billion m3. These form the main supply of drinking water as well as water for industrial and agricultural production and aquaculture. Because of a lack of understanding of the frailty of lake ecosystems and poor environmental awareness, human activities have greatly affected freshwater systems. This article focuses on the problems of one water supply reservoir, Dalangdian Reservoir, and considers options for improving its management. Dalangdian Reservoir is described and occurrence of algal genera given. The authors conclude with remarks on the future of the Dalangdian Reservoir.

Notes: [Auszug] IN recent years, immunization against schistosomiasis has become a challenging research problem. In this laboratory we reported that the inoculation of rhesus monkeys, Macaco, mulatta, with cercariae of the Formosan (F) non-human strain of Schistosoma japonicum gives a high degree of protection ...

Notes: Summary The lung recovery assay for schistosomula has recently been used as a rapid method for measuring the state of immunity of a challenged animal. Its merit rests on the fact that the peak day of schistosomular recovery in the lungs of both normal and immune hosts falls on the same day and the degree of immunity can be measured by the percent of schistosomular recovery on this particular day. An evaluation of this method for mice immunized with highly X-irradiated cercariae ofSchistosoma mansoni was made. The results indicate that in the immunized mice the peak day for the schistosomular recovery was delayed and the number of schistosomula recovered on the peak day was decreased. The delay of the peak day was increased by the degree of host immunity, so its identification for a host of an unknown immunologic status was not a simple matter. In addition, this method measured only the immune effect which took place in the skin and on prepeak days in the lungs. It was not as competent as the conventional liver perfusion method which measures the total result of the immune effect of the skin, lungs, and liver. Our conclusion is that for measuring the immunizing effect of irradiated cercariae, the lung recovery method is not suitable for the determination of the state of immunity induced.

Description: NONCODE ( http://www.bioinfo.org/noncode/ ) is an interactive database that aims to present the most complete collection and annotation of non-coding RNAs, especially long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). The recently reduced cost of RNA sequencing has produced an explosion of newly identified data. Revolutionary third-generation sequencing methods have also contributed to more accurate annotations. Accumulative experimental data also provides more comprehensive knowledge of lncRNA functions. In this update, NONCODE has added six new species, bringing the total to 16 species altogether. The lncRNAs in NONCODE have increased from 210 831 to 527,336. For human and mouse, the lncRNA numbers are 167,150 and 130,558, respectively. NONCODE 2016 has also introduced three important new features: (i) conservation annotation; (ii) the relationships between lncRNAs and diseases; and (iii) an interface to choose high-quality datasets through predicted scores, literature support and long-read sequencing method support. NONCODE is also accessible through http://www.noncode.org/ .

Description: The iron stable isotope compositions ( δ 56 Fe) and iron valence states of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) eclogites from Bixiling in the Dabie orogen belt, China, were measured to trace changes of geochemical conditions during vertical transportation of earth materials, for example, oxygen fugacity. The bulk Fe 3+ /ΣFe ratios of retrograde eclogites, determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy, are consistently higher than those of fresh eclogites, suggesting oxidation during retrograde metamorphism and fluid infiltration. The studied eclogites (five samples) display limited MORB-like (~0.10 ‰) δ 56 Fe values, which are indistinguishable from their protoliths, i.e., gabbro cumulates formed through differentiation of mantle-derived basaltic magma. This suggests that Fe isotope fractionation during continental subduction is limited. Garnet separates display limited δ 56 Fe variation ranging from -0.08 ± 0.07 ‰ to 0.02 ± 0.07‰, whereas coexisting omphacite displays a large variation of δ 56 Fe values from 0.15 ± 0.07 ‰ to 0.47 ± 0.07 ‰. Omphacite also has highly variable Fe 3+ /ΣFe ratios from 0.367 ± 0.025 to 0.598 ± 0.024, indicating modification after peak metamorphism. Omphacite from retrograde eclogites has elevated Fe 3+ /ΣFe ratios (0.54 - 0.60) compared to that from fresh eclogites (~0.37), whereas garnet displays a narrow range of ferric iron content with Fe 3+ /ΣFe ratios from 0.039 ± 0.013 to 0.065 ± 0.022. The homogenous δ 56 Fe values and Fe 3+ /ΣFe ratios of garnet suggest that it survived the retrograde metamorphism and preserved its Fe isotopic features and ferric contents of peak metamorphism. Because of similar diffusion rates of Fe & Mg in garnet and omphacite, and constant Δ 26 Mg omphacite-garnet values (1.14 ± 0.04‰), equilibrium iron isotope fractionation between garnet and omphacite was probably achieved during peak metamorphism. Elevated Fe 3+ /ΣFe ratios of omphacite from retrograde eclogites and variant Δ 56 Fe omphacite-garnet values of the studied eclogites (0.13 ± 0.10 ‰ to 0.48 ± 0.10 ‰) indicate that oxidized geofuild infiltration resulted in elevation of δ 56 Fe values of omphacite during retrograde metamorphism. Description: As an ancient cereal of great importance for dryland agriculture even today, foxtail millet ( Setaria italica ) is fast becoming a new plant genomic model crop. A genotypic analysis of 250 foxtail millet landraces, which represent 1% of foxtail millet germplasm kept in the Chinese National Gene Bank (CNGB), was conducted with 77 SSRs covering the foxtail millet genome. A high degree of molecular diversity among the landraces was found, with an average of 20.9 alleles per locus detected. STRUCTURE, neighbor-jointing, and principal components analyses classify the accessions into three clusters (topmost hierarchy) and, ultimately, four conservative subgroups (substructuring within the topmost clusters) in total, which are in good accordance with eco-geographical distribution in China. The highest subpopulation diversity was identified in the accessions of Pop3 from the middle regions of the Yellow River, followed by accessions in Pop1 from the downstream regions of the Yellow River, suggesting that foxtail millet was domesticated in the Yellow River drainage area first and then spread to other parts of the country. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay of less than 20 cM of genetic distance in the foxtail millet landrace genome was observed, which suggests that it could be possible to achieve resolution down to the 20 cM level for association mapping.
