Notes: The new model discrimination method is based on the correlation coefficient test of experimental data sets for different reactions, without requiring a prior parameter estimation. The new parameter estimation method reduces by n the number of dimensions to be tested, compared to the classical method where n is the number of independent reactions in the system. This has reduced the computation time for most complex reactions to a level, comparable to that needed for single reactions. The example used is the kinetic study of methanol synthesis in which the formation rates of methanol, methane, ethanol and ethane are considered. Two adequately accurate models were obtained from an extensive range of plausible models by using the new model discrimination and parameter estimation method with a relatively small computation effort.

Notes: This paper presents a method of transforming the non-liner regression problem in the kinetic study of complex heterogeneous catalytic reactions into a linear regression problem. Application of this method reduced the number of parameters to be estimated by n-1, where n is the number of independent reactions. In addition, a stepwise model discrimination strategy in introduced to reduce the number of equation sets ad equations in the set undergoing parameter estimation. These two new approaches are very advantageous in reducing the computation effort, especially when the number of independent reactions is large. The linear regression method and the stepwise model discrimination strategy are successfully applied in the kinetic study of the methanol synthesis system in which the formation rates of methanol, methane, ethanol and ethane are considered.

Notes: When two fluid streams with different compositions mix, a significant amount of exergy is lost Utilizing the mixing exergy of gaseous streams of different compositions can reduce equipment cost and energy consumption as well as generate electric power. Suitable modification of known separation processes such as distillation, membranes, adsorption, and absorption to convert them into efficient mixing processes is discussed in detail Mixing may also be combined with a separation process such that the same device is used for both purposes which results in the use of the mixing exergy. This combined separation/mixing process is a single and relatively simple device with efficiencies not typically attainable in the generally used two-step method of separation followed by mixing. For such applications, some is∼ teresting results are presented for the processes using membrane, adsorption and absoqrion devices.

Notes: Distillation systems composed of a prefractionator and a main column are introduced. The columns operate at different pressures, but the temperatures of the utilities are the same as for a single column performing the same separation. The energy integration of the columns is realized by condensing a vapor overhead from the prefractionator in an intermediate reboiler located in the stripping section of the main column or by boiling a bottoms liquid from the prefractionator in an intermediate condenser placed in the rectifying section of the main column.Analysis is performed to determine feasible regions of operational parameters and to minimize vapor flows. A detailed simulation example of the benzene-toluene separation shows that for certain feed compositions it is possible to reduce energy requirements of a conventional binary distillation column by almost one-third using this new distillation system. This savings is achieved without any change in the temperature of the utilities used.

Notes: A systematic procedure is presented to drawn n-compressor membrane cascades for gas-separation applications with n ≥ 1. In this method, a parent cascade structure is created that contains the n-compressor cascades as substructures. These substructures are then revealed by systematically eliminating unwanted membrane stages and recycle compressors from the parent cascade. The procedure is illustrated by generating arrays of one- and two-compressor cascade schemes. It is found that these arrays contain the cascade schemes known from the literature and also lead to some new schemes. This procedure increases the likelihood of finding an economically viable membrane cascade for a given separation application.

Notes: Given the intrinsic kinetics, the tortuosity factor of a Ni/MgAl2O4 catalyst was determined under reaction conditions by minimizing the sum of squares of residuals of the experimental and the simulated conversions. The parallel cross-linked pore model with uncorrelated pore size distribution and orientation was used in the calculation of the effective diffusivities. A modified collocation method was used to obtain the partial pressure profiles of the reacting components in the catalyst pellet. The simulation of the experimental reactor during the optimization of the tortuosity factor also yielded the effectiveness factors of the reactions. The results of the simulation of an industrial steam reformer are also discussed.

Notes: Intrinsic rate equations were derived for the steam reforming of methane, accompanied by water-gas shift on a Ni/MgAl2O4 catalyst. A large number of detailed reaction mechanisms were considered. Thermodynamic analysis helped in reducing the number of possible mechanisms. Twenty one sets of three rate equations were retained and subjected to model discrimination and parameter estimation. The parameter estimates in the best model are statistically significant and thermodynamically consistent.

Description: ABSTRACT In this study, we investigated changes in the precipitation characteristics for China from 1960 to 2012 based on a recent daily precipitation dataset of 666 climate stations and robust non-parametric trend detection techniques. We divided all precipitation events into four non-overlapping categories: light, moderate, heavy and very heavy based on percentile thresholds. We then established the trends for annual total and precipitation of different intensity categories, and examined their regional and seasonal variations. The results show that there was little change in annual total precipitation for entire China, but distinctive regional patterns existed. In general, precipitation increased in the west and decreased in east. Precipitation of different intensities, in general, changed in the same direction as the mean, but heavy and very heavy precipitation events had higher rates of change than mean precipitation. The exception was the southeast region, where despite the slight decrease in mean precipitation, heavy and very heavy precipitation still increased significantly. In addition, we used multiple regression models to explore the contribution of changes of frequency and intensity to total precipitation change, and the contributions of changes of precipitation at different intensities to total precipitation change. For western China, total precipitation change was associated more with frequency change, whereas in eastern China intensity contributed more. For precipitation amount, moderate, heavy and very heavy precipitations contributed to the total change, with little contribution from light precipitation change. For frequency, changes in light and moderate precipitation frequencies dominated the total change, with very little contributions from heavy and very heavy precipitation frequency changes. In addition, we examined the linkage between summer precipitation in eastern China and the East-Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM), found that the northern decrease and southern increase in summer precipitation was likely caused by the weakening of EASM over the study period.

Description: Salinization and secondary salinization often appear after irrigation with saline water. The Taklimakan Desert Highway Shelterbelt has been irrigated with saline ground water for more than ten years; however, soil salinity in the shelterbelt has not been evaluated. The objective of this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of soil moisture and salinity in the shelterbelt system. Using a non-uniform grid method, soil samples were collected every two days during one ten-day irrigation cycle in July 2014 and one day in spring, summer, and autumn. The results indicated that soil moisture declined linearly with time during the irrigation cycle. Soil moisture was greatest in the southern and eastern sections of the study area. In contrast to soil moisture, soil electrical conductivity increased from 2 to 6 days after irrigation, and then gradually decreased from 6 to 8 days after irrigation. Soil moisture was the greatest in spring and the least in summer. In contrast, soil salinity increased from spring to autumn. Long time drip-irrigation with saline groundwater increased soil salinity slightly. The soil salt content was closely associated with soil texture. The current soil salt content did not affect plant growth, however, the soil in the shelterbelt should be continuously monitored to prevent salinization in the future.
