Abstract: The book summarizes the emerging topic about the effects of SMF on biological samples ranging from single molecules, subcellular compartments, and cells to whole organisms. It also discusses the potential application of SMF in clinical treatment of cancer, pain, diabetes and other diseases. With the development and growing popularity of modern appliances like MRI in hospitals, the potential impact of magnetic fields on human health is invoking increasing concerns. At the same time, SMF has been explored in the treatment of tumor and other diseases for decades. Nevertheless, there are still some reservations and uncertainties about these treatments, which are largely due to the differential biological effects reported in the literature. These experimental inconsistencies are mainly caused by variations such as different magnetic field types, intensities, treatment time, as well as biological samples examined. The second edition added eight new chapters about new progress in this field including impacts of SMFs, magnetism of biomolecules, and potential of SMFs in the management of bone, pain, diabetes, and immune systems. This volume will help clarify some dilemmas in this field and encourage further investigations in order to achieve a better understanding of the biological effects of SMF, aiming for a rational application of SMF in clinical therapy in the near future. The book is useful for scientists, doctors, and students who are interested in magnetic fields and life sciences.

Notes: Abstract. Efforts to understand the fate of organochlorine compounds in arable soil have concentrated on anthropogenic compounds, in spite of the fact that organochlorine compounds are both produced and mineralized in soil through natural processes. In order to understand the fate of chlorinated pesticides, it is necessary to take account of the natural chlorine cycle. The present study is a first attempt to illuminate the relationship between the natural chlorine cycle and agricultural practices. The concentration and storage of organic chlorine (Clorg) and chloride (Clinorg) were determined in topsoil of a paddy field compared to an adjacent afforested hill at a sampling site in the Meicun area, Anhui Province, China. The concentration of Clorg, as well as the chlorine-to-carbon ratio, was significantly lower in the paddy field samples than in the forest soil samples. A weak relationship between the concentration of Clorg and the organic carbon content was observed in the paddy field, in contrast to the observations made in the adjacent forest soil as well as those made in previous studies, which have suggested a positive correlation between organic carbon content and Clorg. The similarity between our results at the forest site and the previous studies, which have been carried out in temperate regions, suggests that it is the land use rather than the climate that makes the current paddy soil results different. Our results suggest that the contribution of Clorg to the paddy soil from above-ground litter and from production within the soil are small or negligible compared with the contribution from pesticide application and wet and dry deposition.

Notes: Abstract An implicit non-oscillatory containing no free parameter and dissipative (INND) scheme solving Navier Stakes equations is developed. This scheme is one of total variation diminishing (TVD) algorithms. The results show that this scheme is applicable for solving Navier Stokes equations, and that the shock-capturing capabilbilitv and the convergence rate are satisfactory.

Notes: Abstract The supersonic and hypersonic, laminar and turbulent viscous separated flows over two and three-dimensional compression corners are solved by the antidissipative explicit-implicit difference scheme presented in this paper. The results obtained show that a high accuracy has been achieved by this method and the time needed for computation is greatly reduced.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we propose the concept of rates of strong uniform convergence of nearest neighbor density estimates on any compact set and obtain some better convergence rates. Hence the problem of the strong uniform convergence rates predetermined is its special example. The applied region of the estimate is extended.

Notes: Two series of trialkyltin carboxylates containing butyl and cyclohexyl groups on tin, BunCy3-nSnO2CR (n = 1, 2; R = n-Pr, Ph, 4-CIC6H4, 4-NO2C6H4) have been synthesized and their structures characterized by IR, and 119Sn and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The compounds are five-coordinate, carboxylate-bridged polymers when R = n-Pr, while the other aromatic carboxylates are four coordinate. The compounds were also tested for their fungicidal, insecticidal and acaricidal activities.

Description: Waveform design and diversity is the technology that allows one or more sensors (e.g., radar or radar sensor networks) on board a platform to automatically change operating parameters, e.g., frequency, gain pattern, and pulse repetition frequency, to meet the varying environments. Optimization problems in the design of radar waveforms such as polyphase code design often bring troubles to designers. This paper proposes to hybridize the migration operator of biogeography-based optimization (BBO) approach with artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. Migration operator is able to promote information exchange of solutions in bee colony. This is useful for exploiting good information of searched solutions. Moreover, t h r e e state-of-the-art ABC variants are taken for study. A spread spectrum polyphase code design problem is chosen for experiment. The proposed ABCBBO algorithm as well as three state-of-the-art ABC algorithms are applied to solve polyphase code design. Results show that ABCBBO presents the overall best performance amongst the test algorithms. It is also the most reliable one.

Description: Ecological compensation standards and the allocation of compensation funds have always been the core issues of watershed ecological compensation. Due to the construction of the Eastern Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project (SNWTP), Jiangsu Province has paid a huge cost for the protection of water resources, and local economic development has been greatly affected. Therefore, this paper takes Jiangsu Province, the water source area of the Eastern Route of the SNWTP as an example, and combines a geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing technology, using the ecosystem services value method to calculate the ecosystem services value of Jiangsu Province from 2005 to 2018. Then the change of this ecosystem services value in Jiangsu Province from 2015 to 2018 is taken as the basis for watershed ecological compensation standards of the Eastern Route. Through a compensation fund allocation model, watershed ecological compensation funds are allocated to four cities, Yangzhou, Huai’an, Suqian and Xuzhou, which are located along the Eastern Route of this SNWTP in Jiangsu Province. The results show that: (1) The ecosystem services value of Jiangsu Province has changed greatly. Urbanization and market environment of grain crops are the main reasons for this change; (2) the relationship between ecosystem services in Jiangsu Province is mainly synergistic; (3) Suqian receives US$24.73 million; Huai’an receives US$16.49 million; Yangzhou receives US$54.88 million and Xuzhou receives US$0.95 million in watershed ecological compensation, respectively. Watershed ecological compensation standards based upon the value of ecosystem services, and the allocation of compensation funds at the municipal level, are conducive to the improvement in efficiency of watershed ecological compensation in mainland China.

Description: Aerosol activation into cloud droplets is an important process that governs aerosol indirect effects. The advanced treatment of aerosol activation by Fountoukis and Nenes (2005) and its recent updates, collectively called the FN series, have been incorporated into a newly developed regional coupled climate-air quality model based on the Weather Research and Forecasting model with the physics package of the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (WRF-CAM5) to simulate aerosol-cloud interactions in both resolved and convective clouds. The model is applied to East Asia for two full years of 2005 and 2010. A comprehensive model evaluation is performed for model predictions of meteorological, radiative, and cloud variables, chemical concentrations, as well as column mass abundances against satellite data and surface observations from air quality monitoring sites across East Asia. The model performs overall well for major meteorological variables including near surface temperature, specific humidity, and wind speed, precipitation, cloud fraction, precipitable water, downward shortwave and longwave radiation, as well as column mass abundances of CO, SO 2 , NO 2 , HCHO, and O 3 in terms of both magnitudes and spatial distributions. Larger biases exist in the predictions of surface concentrations of CO and NO x at all sites and SO 2 , O 3 , PM 2.5 , and PM 10 concentrations at some sites, aerosol optical depth, cloud condensation nuclei over ocean, cloud droplet number concentration (CDNC), cloud liquid and ice water path, and cloud optical thickness. Compared with the default Abdul-Razzack Ghan (2000) parameterization, simulations with the FN series produce ~107-113% higher CDNC, with half of the difference attributable to the higher aerosol activation fraction by the FN series, and the remaining half due to feedbacks in subsequent cloud microphysical processes. With the higher CDNC, the FN series are more skillful in simulating cloud water path, cloud optical thickness, downward shortwave radiation, shortwave cloud forcing, and precipitation. The model evaluation identifies several areas of improvements including emissions and their vertical allocation as well as model formulations such as aerosol formation, cloud droplet nucleation, and ice nucleation.
